PBR Illinois Player of the Week: INF/RHP Cal Sefcik

INF Cal Sefcik (Marist, 2023; Indiana), was undeniably one of the biggest winter winners from Illinois, showing incredibly well at the Preseason Procase and then again at the Super 60. His right-handed bat was turning heads at both events, blasting baseballs on demand and reaching up to an eye-opening 108 mph for his max exit-velocity, so it is no surprise to see him dominating at the plate to start the year and earning the second PBR Player of the Week Award of 2023.

Sefcik started his week out rather slow for his standards, finishing his first game of the season at a 1-for-4 clip with a run scored in a 3-2 victory over Fenwick. Despite a 7-5 loss to Richards in game two, this is where Sefcik really started to heat up - finishing a perfect 3-for-3 with a home run, two doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored to power the offense.

Marist then went on to take down Stagg by the score of 12-1, as Sefcik helped the offensive charge with a double, RBI, two runs scored and a walk, finishing 1-for-2 on the day.

The final game of the week saw the Redhawks fall to St. Rita by the score of 10-6, but Sefcik was still an offensive force to be reckoned with; finishing the day 3-for-4 with a home run, triple, three RBIs, and two runs scored - bringing his weekly total to 8-for-13 with two home runs, a triple, three doubles, eight RBIs and seven runs scored.

The Indiana commit also saw some valuable time on the mound, striking out nine over three innings of work.

Currently the No. 7 ranked player in the state, Sefcik brings all sorts of tools to the table. He's a physical presence and certainly looks the part, listed at 6-foot, 205-pounds with round shoulders, a physical lower-half and clear strength throughout. His aforementioned bat-strength is rivaled by few players in the state, and it was on full display in-event this winter; back-spinning baseballs with an impressive up-the-middle spread, leading the star-studded Super 60 in average exit velocity (101.9 mph) as well as max exit velocity (107.1 mph). He showed similarly well at the ProCase, leading the event in average and max exit velocity as well (98.5 mph, T108.2 mph).

He's an above-average defender on the infield with a strong arm (T92 mph) and looks to have to ability to remain there moving forward - boasting sneaky athleticism and speed (6.90 runner in the 60). He will also be heavily relied on to lead the Redhawks on the mound, as he can run his fastball up to 90 mph with a quality curveball/changeup combination. If Sefcik continues to dominate the Illinois high school baseball stage, he could very well end up being in serious consideration for PBR Illinois Player of the Year.

Scouting Report

2/05/23

INF Cal Sefcik (Marist, 2023; Indiana commit) may have entered the event as somewhat of a “sleeper”, but we can guarantee that his name is now known among the scouting community. Currently ranked No. 14 in the state, No. 455 nationally. Sefcik has transformed himself into one of the more physical, if not the most physical, right-handed bat in the state. The 6-foot, 205-pound, muscle-bound, right-handed hitter, stole the show during BP, putting together perhaps the most impressive rounds of the day as he led the event in average exit velocity (101.9) and max exit velocity (107.1 mph), to go along with a max distance of 390’. Sefcik peppered the middle of the field with loud backspin and lifted contact, remaining on-time consistently throughout his rounds. The right-handed hitter starts with an open setup, striding long while hanging his foot to stay in rhythm, tipping his bat slightly while landing into foot-strike with hand-separation. His path stays through the zone and flat seemingly forever, creating all kinds of backspin and rise to his up-the-middle barrels. Sefick swings with controlled aggression and quick, ultra-strong hands (26.0 mph max; 24.8 mph average) with notable bat-speed (79.5 mph max; 74.9 mph average) to create eye-opening power. His round of defense was also quite impressive, as he showed off his range laterally to pair with quick/soft hands and an athletic, crisp double play turn. As a 6.90 runner in the 60, Sefcik proved that he is more than capable of staying on the infield moving forward and should be closely followed by scouts moving forward.

We're thankful for the POTW submissions we received from the coaches across the state. The players who garnered POTW consideration will earn a place within Friday's Diamond Notes story, so be on the lookout for that by the end of this week.
