Preseason I.D. - Gurnee: Infield Analysis

The Gurnee Preseason ID showcase took place on Sunday, February 21st at the Bat Speed Academy in Gurnee, IL. The event featured over 110 prospects mostly from the northern part of Illinois and a handful from Wisconsin.

Last week we began the analysis from the event with the catchers. Today we take a look at the infielders who participated at the event.

TOP INFIELDERS

1. Andrew Wiegman, OF/INF, Carmel Catholic HS, 2019
6-foot-2, 170-pound, athletic frame, projectable, multi-positional prospect. One of the best athletes we have seen in the 2019 class. Ran a 4.04 home-to-first, was clocked at 90 mph from the outfield and registered an 89 mph exit velocity. Also, projectable on the mound but did not pitch at the event. Offensively, flashed explosive bat speed for his age; hands are quick to the ball and routinely makes hard contact. Balanced setup, low hand set, gets off his backside at contact and a gap-to-gap approach. Defensively, could stick in the infield or the outfield; arm is well above-average and his hands are soft. Long, quick arm action clocked at 83 mph across the infield. Extremely projectable, high follow prospect in the 2019 class.

2. Clark Elliott, INF, Barrington HS, 2019
5-foot-11, 150-pound, athletically built, advanced left-handed hitting infielder. Flashed his speed tool running a 3.94 down the line. Offensively, fluid rhythm, loose hands, line-drive hitter and present bat speed; 80 mph exit velocity from a tee. Simple approach, balanced setup, smooth load, short bat path and excellent balance through contact. Defensively, athletic fielding position and steady hands on the infield. Accurate arm clocked at 77 mph across the diamond. Highly projectable 2019, should be a high follow moving forward.

3. Sam Fradin, 3B, Deerfield, 2017
6-foot-1, 190-pound third baseman. Showed plus arm strength defensively, short over the top slot, long release some windup, carried across at 91 mph. Showed lateral agility, worked through the baseball, clean exchange showed body control. Right-handed hitter, open setup, leg kick stride, can get down earlier. Path showed some length, rotational type, flashed hard contact. 96 mph exit velocity from the tee. 4.36 runner down the line.

4. Andrew Gough, INF/RHP, Lake Forest HS, 2018
5-foot-10, 171-pound, solid build, two-way prospect. 4.35 runner down the line. Right-handed hitter, simple approach and good bat path; short and level getting extension through contact. Fluid rhythm, line-drive approach and good balance. Balanced setup, smooth load and short stride; 84 mph exit velocity. Defensively, flashed some bounce on the infield and a strong arm; 84 mph across the diamond with carry. On the mound, slow paced delivery, ability to repeat and some effort. Long arm action out of a high ¾ window. Both off-speed pitches flashed plus potential. Changeup, maintains arm speed, fade action and ranged between 71-75 mph. Curveball, better spin and action out of the stretch, 11/5 shape and sat 66-70 mph.  Fastball flashed some arm-side-run, 76-78 mph, touching 80.

5. Eric Rapanan, MIF, Warren HS, 2018
5-foot-5, 130-pound middle infielder. Ran a 4.36 down the line. Right-handed hitter, open stance, smooth loading action, short stride, good balance. Line drive type hitter, short level path, 77 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively showed solid action, plays through the baseball, softer hands with ability to cushion the baseball. Arm action is short, over the top slot, 77 mph across the diamond.

Andrew Austin, RHP/INF, Warren HS, 2019
6-foot, 207-pound, extra-large frame, two-way prospect. Offensively, hits from the right side. Starts from a tall, balanced setup, slight pre-pitch load and an inside/out bat path; 78 mph exit velocity. Defensively, short arm action from a ¾ slot on the infield; clocked at 59 mph across the diamond. 5.83 runner down the line. On the mound, coiled windup, short arm action out of a ¾ window and regular effort in his delivery. Fastball worked straight and clocked at 62-64 mph, touching 66. Curveball, 12/6 shape, ranged between 56-59 mph. Changeup sat 61-62 mph.

Michael Bedard, RHP/INF, Barrington HS, 2019
6-foot-1, 170-pound, athletically built, two-way prospect. Right-handed hitter, simple swing and stays on top of the baseball; line-drive approach, 72 mph exit velocity from a tee. Starts from a crouched position, slight pre-pitch load and good balance through contact. Defensively, showed decent feet around the bag at first base. Short, over-the-top arm action and throws clocked at 71 mph across the diamond. On the mound, regular effort, drop and drive delivery. Fastball works straight and clocked at 73-74 mph. Curveball, 10/4 shape and ranged between 67-69 mph. Changeup, 70-72 mph.

Jacob Biggs, INF, Grant HS, 2018
5-foot-8, 131-pound infielder, think wiry frame. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, flat path with length, 81 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm played short from a high ¾ slot, some accuracy, 75 mph across the diamond. On the mound arm action played more from an over the top slot with some effort. Fastball was straight, showed some control, 74-76 mph, touched 78 mph. Curveball has 12/6 action, gradual bend, 60-64 mph. Changeup showed feel, 71-72 mph, slight sinking action. 

Joey Chiappetta, INF, York HS, 2018
6-foot-1, 157-pound, wiry, left-handed hitting infielder. Ran an above-average home-to-first for his age, 4.30. Offensively, starts from a balanced closed setup, short stride and average balance through contact; 77 mph exit velocity. Defensively, reliable hands and athletic fielding position on the infield. Short arm action from an over-the-top slot and clocked at 71 mph across the diamond.

Jack Christensen, RHP/1B, Lake Community, 2017
Extra-large frame, 6-foot-5, 205-pound right-handed two-way player. Hits from a balanced setup, short quick stride. Path has some lift, power potential, flashed hard contact with some extension. 87 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively showed playable actions around first base, big target, some feel around the bag. Arm action is short and over the top, slight carry. 77 mph across the diamond. On the mound arm action is short, high ¾ slot, regular effort. Fastball has slight arm side run, showed feel for the zone, sat 76-78 mph. Breaking ball had gradual slurve type action, 64-67 mph. Changeup flashed sink, 67-69 mph. 

Pasquale DeFilippis, RHP/INF, Warren HS, 2018
5-foot-10, 170-pound two-way prospect. Offensively, from the right side, his bat stayed flat through the zone at times. Open setup, hands load, normal stride and average balance; 83 mph exit velocity. Defensively, quick exchange on the infield. Clocked at 71 mph across the diamond from a high ¾ slot. 4.95 runner down the line. On the mound, long arm action and worked from the stretch only. Fastball clocked at 74-76 mph. Throws a knuckle curveball that ranged between 62-65 mph. Changeup showed some feel, 67-69 mph.

Ryan Denz, INF, Dundee Crown HS, 2017
5-foot-6, 130-pound infielder, wiry frame. Defensively played with short quick footwork on the infield, average hands and body control. Arm action is quick, over the top slot, with accuracy, 79 mph across the diamond. Gets down the line at 4.51. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, slightly lifted stride. 76 mph exit velocity from the tee.

David Dibble, INF, Kenosha Tremper HS (WI), 2017
6-foot, 142-pound, lanky, athletic frame, right-handed hitting infielder. Offensively, loads his hands pre-pitch, short stride, long bat path, getting extension through contact at times. 73 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, steady hands, gets rid of it quickly at times from a ¾ to low ¾ slot; clocked at 70 mph across the diamond. 4.83 runner down the line.

Aidan Dolan, 1B/RHP, Buffalo Grove, 2017
6-foot-1, 220-pound two-way player. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, average balance. Showed bat strength, 91 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm played long from a high ¾ slot, 70 mph across the diamond. Ran a 4.90 home to first. On the mound arm works from an over the top slot, short arm action, with effort. Fastball sat 69-71 mph, little action, some downhill. Cutter worked at 64-65. Changeup is 63-64 mph, slight downhill sink.

Colin Fields, RHP/INF, Libertyville HS, 2018
6-foot, 170-pound, projectable, athletic frame, two-way prospect. Projects out well on the mound. Smooth, repeatable delivery and a quick, loose arm action. Four pitch repertoire with a slider that has plus potential. Fastball, slight arm-side-run, thrown for strikes and clocked at 80-82 mph, touching 83. Slider was the best of the two breaking balls, flashing sharp, tight spin and 10/4 shape, 66-67 mph. Curveball was not far behind however, 11/5 shape, with depth, sat 61-63 mph. Changeup, maintains arm speed, thrown for strikes, mostly straight and ranged between 69-71 mph. Projectable right-handed pitcher in the 2018 class. Offensively, balanced setup, minimal load and short stride. Path has some length, gets extension at times and good balance through contact; 80 mph exit velocity. Defensively, steady hands, clean exchange and arm works on the infield; 76 mph across the diamond. Also, 4.79 runner down the line.  

Matt Fix, INF, Carmel Catholic HS, 2018
5-foot-8, 130-pound infielder. Right-handed hitter, tall setup, reverse toe tap stride. 77 mph exit velocity from the tee, average bat speed, shorter path. Defensively played deep, 5.01 runner home to first. Arm action is loose, shorter arm action, low ¾ slot. 70 mph across the diamond.

Kyle Fleming, INF/RHP, Lake Zurich HS, 2017
6-foot-1, 185-pound, solid frame, two-way prospect. Offensively, right-handed hitter, long, uphill path with strength through contact; 88 mph exit velocity. Slight crouched setup and hands drop during load. Defensively, reliable hands on the infield; throws from a high ¾ slot and clocked at 76 mph across the diamond. 4.57 runner down the line. On the mound, long arm action out of the same high ¾ slot as the infield. Fastball works straight and clocked at 74-75 mph. Curveball, 11/5 shape and depth, sat 59-61 mph. Changeup mostly straight and clocked at 69-72 mph.

Neil Freeman, 3B, DePaul College Prep, 2017
6-foot-2, 180-pound third baseman, solid build. Right-handed hitter, easy leg lift stride, average balance. Path has some length, flashed bat speed, raw bat, showed extension. 86 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm action is short and over the top, some accuracy and carry, 80 mph across the diamond. Clean exchange, average hands, raw body control. 4.69 runner down the line.

Jimmy Friel, INF, Grant HS, 2018
5-foot-9, 150-pound right-handed hitting infielder. Ran a 4.37 runner down the line. Offensively, long bat path getting extension through the baseball.  Balanced crouched setup, hands load pre-pitch and short stride. 81 mph exit velocity. Defensively, hands and feet work well on the infield; long arm action, high ¾ to ¾ slot and clocked at 69 mph across the diamond.

Joshua Golibrzuch, INF, Romeoville HS, 2018
5-foot-9, 150-pound infielder. Right-handed hitter with a short and level bat occasionally getting extension through contact at times. Line- drive type hitter; hands work on top of the baseball. Balanced setup, leg-kick timing trigger and average bat speed; 77 mph exit velocity. Defensively, fields athletically, out in front of his body; made the backhand play look easy and flashed a quick release. Throws clocked at 67 mph across the infield. 4.76 runner down the line.

Clay Goreth, INF, East Peoria HS, 2018
5-foot-8, 150-pund infielder. Defensively arm played from a high ¾ slot, accurate across, 74 mph. Hands played average, clean exchange. 4.55 runner down the line. Right-handed hitter, balanced setup, stride dives. Path works with some length, loads back elbow up, 71 mph exit velocity from the tee.

Matthew Grubb, INF/RHP, Lakes HS, 2018
5-foot-8, 160-pound two-way prospect. On the mound he showed above-average feel for his three-pitch mix. Over-the-top slot, short arm action and some quickness in his arm; some rhythm and effort in his delivery. Slider is a plus pitch for his age; fastball arm speed, sharp, late action 10/4 shape, thrown for strikes and sat 66-69 mph. Fastball, strikes, slight cutting action, 73-75 mph, touching 79. Changeup had feel, sinking action and sat 65-66 mph. Right-handed hitter, flashed some athleticism in his swing; level, long bat path, gets some extension through contact. Balanced setup, smooth pre-pitch load and leg-lift timing trigger. 84 mph exit velocity. Defensively, steady hands and a quick release on the infield. Short arm action, ¾ arm slot and clocked at 74 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 4.62 home-to-first.

Colton Hale, RHP/INF, St. Joseph-Ogden HS, 2017
6-foot, 170-pound athletically built two-way prospect. Projectable right-handed pitcher. On the mound, smooth rhythm, flashes a quick short arm with regular effort in his delivery; stays on-line, lands square and hides the ball. Fastball, thrown for strikes, some arm-side-run and clocked at 80-82 mph, touching 83. Curveball, feel, worked 11/5, tight spin and ranged between 68-71 mph. Changeup, tendency to slow his arm, sink and fade action, 68-72 mph. Offensively, right-handed hitter with a simple approach; short and level bat path through the zone. Balanced setup, smooth load and good balance. 80 mph exit velocity. Defensively, steady hands on the infield. Short arm action, high ¾ slot and clocked at 77 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 4.62 home-to-first.

Maxwell Herubin, INF/RHP, Carmel Catholic HS, 2019
5-foot-11, 165-pound two-way prospect. Projects well on the mound. Smooth rhythm, loose long arm action from a ¾, low ¾ slot. Stays on-line, lands square and finishes athletically, falling off towards first at times. Fastball, slight arm-side-run, thrown for strikes and clocked at 75-76 mph, touching 77. Curveball, some feel, sharp action with depth, 11/5 shape and ranged between 64-66 mph. Changeup, flashed fade and clocked at 65-69 mph. Offensively, flashed a quick bat and some looseness in the swing; 86 mph exit velocity from a tee. Balanced setup, bars out some on his load and uphill path through the zone. Defensively, steady hands and a short arm action from a low ¾ slot; clocked at 70 mph across the diamond. Also, 4.62 runner down the line.

Xavier Hunter, INF, Warren HS, 2018
5-foot-8, 160-pound right-handed hitting infielder. 4.78 runner down the line. Offensively, starts from a tall balanced setup, slight pre-pitch load and short stride; 78 mph exit velocity. On infield short arm action, ¾ slot and clocked at 69 mph across the diamond.

Brandon Khan, RHP/INF, Lakes HS, 2017
6-foot-1, 170-pound two-way prospect. Offensively, flashed some bat speed and a gap-to-gap approach. Fluid rhythm, lift in swing and path has length; 79 mph exit velocity. Defensively, steady hands and athletic fielding position on the infield; longer exchange due to a long arm action from an over-the-top slot. Throws clocked at 81 mph, flashing carry across the diamond. 4.46 runner down the line. On the mound, quick arm action out of an over-the-top window. Some rhythm, stays on-line, lands square and finishes athletically. Fastball, some arm-side-run and clocked at 80-82, touching 83. Curveball, 11/5 shape, 69-72 mph. Changeup, maintains arm speed, gets underneath at times and ranged between 75-78 mph.

Cameron Kukla, 1B, Carmel Catholic, 2017
6-foot-3, 215-pound first baseman, thick build. Left-handed hitter, slight crouched setup. Hits off back side, uphill path and 71 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm action played firm and over the top, 64 mph across the diamond. 4.70 runner home to first.

Joey Lake, INF, Carmel Catholic, 2017
6-foot, 200-pound, wide-shouldered, right-handed hitting infielder. Offensively, made some hard contact during batting practice; 92 mph exit velocity. Open setup, stride gets back to square and line-drive type hitter. Defensively, clean exchange on the infield. Long arm action, over-the-top slot and clocked at 74 mph across the diamond. Also, a 4.69 runner down the line.

Ricky Lee, 1B, Warren, 2017
6-foot-3, 200-pound first-baseman, strong, physical build. Right-handed hitter, tall setup, arm bar load. Showed pop in his bat, hard contact with well above average bat speed. Path has some length, gap to gap approach. 91 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm played short and over the top, accurate arm, 72 mph across, played true. Hands showed feel, big target around the bag. 4.39 runner home to first.

Ryan Lin-Peistrup, INF, Loyola HS, 2017
5-foot-11, 170-pound, well-proportioned, infielder. 4.40 runner down the line. At the plate, pull approach at the plate and some strength through contact; 87 mph exit velocity from a tee. Balanced setup, pre-pitch load, short stride and average balance. Defensively, fluid actions on the infield; soft hands, athletic fielding position and a clean exchange. Loose, clean arm action, from a high ¾ slot, clocked at 73 mph.

Brandon Matias, INF, Glenbrook South HS, 2019
5-foot-11, 165-pound, athletically built, right-handed hitting infielder. Well above-average exit velocity for a freshman, 90 mph. Offensively, fluid rhythm, present bat speed, long path through the zone and a gap-to-gap approach. Balanced setup, smooth pre-pitch load and short stride. Defensively, clean exchange on the infield. Long arm action, over-the-top to high ¾ slot and clocked at 76 mph. Also, a 4.44 runner down the line.

Jeremy Meger, INF, Niles West HS, 2017
5-foot-10, 130-pound lanky right-handed hitting infielder. Steady defender on the infield. Reliable hands, fields athletically and gets rid of the ball quickly and cleanly. Short arm action, high ¾ slot, accurate and clocked at 70 mph. Offensively, uphill bat path through the hitting zone; dives towards the baseball. 77 mph exit velocity from a tee. Also, ran a 4.68 home-to-first.

Jonathan Montalvo, C/INF, St. Patrick HS, 2017
5-foot-11, 215-pound, wide-shouldered, right-handed hitter. Worked out at third base and catcher. Offensively, registered a 90 mph exit velocity from a tee. Balanced setup, smooth pre-pitch load, heel-lift toe tap stride, uphill bat path and average balance through contact. Defensively, on the infield, steady hands, flashed quick feet and a clean exchange. Short, loose arm action, some accuracy and clocked at 78 mph across the diamond. Also, worked out behind the plate; 74 mph from the crouch and pop times ranged between 2.15-2.25. Also, ran a 5.08 home-to-first.

Dylan Niedzwiecki, OF/INF, Lake Zurich HS, 2017
6-foot-2, 170-pound, projectable frame, multi-positional prospect. Ran a 4.30 home-to-first. Offensively, hits from the left-side. Starts from an open balanced setup, leg-lift timing trigger and average balance. Loose hands create some whip in the swing; 89 mph exit velocity. Defensively, worked out in the infield and outfield. Arm played well from both positions but looks more natural on the infield. On the infield steady hands and tendency to play tall. Accurate, true throws; 83 mph from the outfield and 80 mph across the infield.

Luke Nolan, INF, Lake Forest HS, 2019
5-foot-10, 140-pound, plenty of room for continued physical development, infielder. Offensively, bat stays flat through the hitting zone, pull approach at the plate and above-average balance; 69 mph exit velocity. Defensively, reliable hands and clean exchange on the infield. Throws from a low ¾ slot and clocked at 58 mph across the diamond. 4.94 runner down the line.

Kevin O’Brien, INF, Grayslake Central HS, 2019
5-foot-8, 140-pound infielder, slender build. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, drops hands at load, average balance. Path worked uphill at times, slight collapse on back side, 76 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively showed actions, ability to cushion the baseball, clean exchange. Arm action is short, athletic slots, 69 mph across the diamond. 4.55 runner home to first.

Reese Patterson, INF, Libertyville HS, 2019
5-foot-8, 145-pound infielder, average build. Right-handed hitter, loaded leg lift trigger slight hang. Solid balance. Showed looseness, some bat speed, 73 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively showed solid hands, average transfer, long time getting rid of it, continues to play through to target. Showed some arm strength for his age, short arm action, high ¾ slot, 75 mph across the diamond.

Declan Peterson, INF, Grayslake North HS, 2017
5-foot-8, 165-pound average build infielder. Right-handed hitter, hands are quiet and flashed looseness in his swing; level bat path, balanced setup, short stride and gets good use out of his lower half. Line drive approach at the plate; 83 mph exit velocity. On the infield, hands work, steady fielder and gets rid of the baseball quickly. Long arm action, ¾ slot and clocked at 70 mph. Also, ran a 4.70 down the line.

Robert Ramirez, INF/RHP, Carmel Catholic HS, 2018
5-foot-10, 155-pound two-way prospect. Offensively, balanced setup, smooth deep pre-pitch load, leg-lift timing trigger and average balance through contact. Long bat path that stays flat through the zone at times; 81 mph exit velocity. Defensively, quick exchange on the infield; clocked at 60 mph across the diamond. 4.98 runner down the line. On the mound, high ¾ arm slot and regular effort in his delivery. Flashed feel for three pitches. Fastball works straight and clocked at 70-71 mph. Curveball thrown for strikes, 12/6 to 11/5 shape and flashed depth at 60-62 mph. Changeup, maintains arm speed, works straight and thrown for strikes at 62-64 mph.

Noah Reed, INF, Indian Trail HS (WI), 2019
5-foot-9, 127-pound infielder. Right-handed hitter flashed looseness in his swing. Fluid rhythm, tall setup, exaggerated leg-lift load and timing-trigger; 70 mph exit velocity. Defensively, steady hands on the infielder and some fluidness. Short arm action, high ¾ to ¾ arm slot, accurate throws clocked at 62 mph. Reed is a 2019 as he continues to physically develop.

Parker Reinhard, 3B/C, Warren HS, 2017
6-foot-3, 215-pound multi-positional right-handed hitter. Offensively, flashed a quick bat and some pull power; 87 mph exit velocity from a tee. Fluid rhythm, open tall setup and a controlled leg-lift timing trigger. Defensively, on the infield, steady hands and fields athletically out in front of his body. Short arm action, ¾ slot and clocked at 71 mph across the diamond. Also, worked out behind the dish; short arm action, over-the-top and clocked at 71 mph from the crouch. Pop times, 2.16-2.32. Also, ran a 4.72 home-to-first.

Charlie Reinkemeyer, INF, Lake Forest, 2017
6-foot-185-pound infielder, lean athletic shape, well proportioned. Right-handed hitter, short stride, minimal hand load. Path stays flat, some length, tends to work down to up. 88 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively showed some athleticism on the move, solid body control. Arm plays over the top, 78 mph across the diamond. 4.47 runner home to first.

Jonny Salm, INF, Lake Forest Academy, 2017
5-foot-6, 151-pound infielder. Right-handed hitter, wider setup, leg lift stride, dives to hit. Path has some length, slight uphill path, 82 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively uses a short arm action with effort, 76 mph across the diamond. Average hands, longer exchange, showed some range and body control to glove side. 4.50 runner down the line.

Ronnie Slawek, INF, Grayslake North HS, 2018
5-foot-9, 166-pound right-handed hitting infielder. Offensively, tall setup, big leg-lift timing trigger and long bat path through the hitting zone; 73 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, throws from a ¾ arm slot, clocked at 61 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 4.69 home-to-first.

Jackson Smoko, INF/RHP, Bradford, 2018
6-foot, 155-pound two-way prospect. Offensively, balanced setup, slight bar load and leg-lift timing trigger; 71 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, hands work and gets rid of the ball in a hurry on the infield. Short arm action from a high ¾ slot, some accuracy and clocked at 66 mph. 4.75 runner down the line. On the mound works across his body with some effort in his delivery. Short arm action and an upright finish. Fastball clocked at 70-71 mph, touching 72. Curveball worked between 59-61 mph. Changeup sat 63-65 mph.

Colin Spranger, INF, Warren HS, 2018
6-foot, 150-pound, lanky, right-handed hitting infielder. Offensively, fluid rhythm, loose hands and flashed bat speed; uphill bat path through the zone and 78 mph exit velocity. Tall balanced setup, slight pre-pitch load and short stride. Defensively, reliable hands, athletic fielding position and clean transfer on the infield; Accurate throws, long arm action from a high ¾ slot and clocked at 70 mph. 5.08 runner down the line.

Connor Szwajkowski, INF, Antioch HS, 2018
6-foot, 130-pound, long-limbed, infielder. Offensively, hits from the right side, long and level bat path through the hitting zone. Tall balanced setup, hands load pre-pitch, short stride and average balance through contact; 77 mph exit velocity. Defensively, short arm action from an over-the-top slot and clocked at 66 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 4.70 down the line.

Matt Temaner, INF, Warren HS, 2017
