Prospect Identification Showcase: Pitching Analysis

Concluding the positional analysis of the Prospect I.D. Showcase we finish with the pitchers where we saw two high end prospects in the Class of 2016.

RHP’s Ryan Hodgett (St. Francis) and Garrett Acton (Lemont) are two high level prospects in the Class of 2016 and led the way in the pitching group. Both showed strong arms with Hodgett touching 88 mph and Acton at 87 mph. 2017 Michael Stupinski (Fenwick) was also impressive, only a freshman, Stupinski touched 80 mph and has an incredibly quick arm with excellent feel for a cutter.

Here’s a look at the top pitchers.

Top Pitching Prospects

1. Ryan Hodgett, RHP, St. Francis, 2016
6-foot, 180-pound right handed pitcher, solid build. Delivery has some rhythm, occasional effort. Arm works quickly, high ¾ slot, long loose arm action. Fastball is mostly straight, late heavy feel, finishes through the zone well, 86-88 mph. Flashed a two seam fastball with occasional arm side action at 86-88. Curveball works on 11/5 plane, flashed late action, 70-73 mph, better action when thrown harder, showed feel for the zone, advanced pitch. Changeup thrown with fastball similar arm action, showed feel for the pitch at the bottom of the zone, 75-78 mph. Hodgett has a strong arm and the secondary stuff to go with it, a high follow at the next level.

2. Garrett Acton, RHP, Lemont, 2016
5-foot-11, 190-pound right handed pitcher, young build. Delivery has regular effort, squared landing, athletic finish. Arm works cleanly, loose action, quick arm out of a high ¾ slot. Fastball is straight with slight action to his arm side, showed well above average command of the zone, 85-86 mph, touched 87 mph. Flashed a sinker at 78-83 mph, occasional heavy action to his arm side. Slider works on 10/4 plane, sharp action, power pitch with excellent potential, fastball arm speed, showed well above average feel of the zone, 73-74 mph. Changeup thrown with fastball arm speed, occasional sink, solid control, 76-79 mph. Acton shows the ability to throw multiple pitches out of the same window with similar arm action, making him highly deceptive. His ability to pitch appears to be far beyond his peers.

3. Michael Stupinski, RHP, Fenwick, 2017
Long frame, slender build, wiry 6-foot-2, 165-pound right handed pitcher, highly projectable frame. One of the top freshman at the showcase. Delivery works online, stays balanced and level throughout, slower tempo to explosive release. Arm action is quick, advanced arm speed for age, high ¾ arm slot, short loose arm action. Fastball has slight running action, showed control of the baseball. 78-80 mph. Displayed an advanced cut fastball for age, 73-74 mph, showed true cutting action, well above average feel for the pitch. Changeup has fade, showed excellent control of it, ranged from 66-71 mph. Stupinski looks to be the prototypical young lanky pitcher with a quick arm who should project well going forward.

4. Nick Bronson, RHP, Normal West, 2015
Thin build, lanky athletic frame, long legs, 6-foot-4, 185-pound right handed pitcher, projectable arm. Delivery is smooth and athletic, little effort. Fastball has finish through the zone, late action, showed the ability to control the baseball, 81-83 mph , touched 84 mph. Curveball has 11/5 shape, 70-72 mph, flashed occasional sharp action. Changeup has slight sinking action, ranged from 72-78 mph. Bronson has a high ceiling with his clean arm action and projectbale frame, a strong follow in a deep 2015 class in Illinois.

5. Darick Hayes, 3B/RHP, Mount Vernon, 2016
6-foot, 180-pound athletic two-way player who projects well. Defensively he plays with soft hands, fluid footwork, quick and clean exchanges. Showed solid, side-to-side range as well. Arm works loose, from a ¾ slot at 81 mph with strong carry and solid accuracy. Ran a 7.38 60. At the plate he hits from a balanced stance with a smooth load, short stride and quality balance through contact. Swing is simple and quiet with an uphill path, quality extension, and above average bat speed. Exit velocity was 78 mph off a tee. On the mound his delivery has slow, smooth rhythm, clean lines, and easy effort. Arm works loose and quick, from a high ¾ slot. Showed strong feel for his fastball, sitting 80-81 mph, flashing 82 mph once, with sinking action. Had advanced feel for his changeup, sitting 68-71 mph with quality arm side run, for strikes. Throws a curveball with 11/5 shape, sitting 66-69 mph.

6. Thomas Giella, RHP, Loyola, 2016
Sturdy lower half, 6-foot-1, 200-pound right handed pitcher. Delivery is clean and works online, athletic finish, works well out of the stretch. Arm action works, loose high ¾ slot. Fastball has slight arm side run, showed control of the zone, 79-81 mph, touched 83 mph. Changeup flashed sink, near fastball arm speed, 66-70 mph. Curveball has steep shape, flashed 12/6 action, 62-64 mph. Slider flashed action, 68-69 mph, occasional back up action.

7. Brian Schrimmer, RHP, Vernon Hills, 2015
5-foot-10, 170-pound right handed pitcher, standard build. Delivery shows some effort, long arm action, high ¾ arm slot. Fastball is straight, sat 83-85 mph. Breaking ball had above average action, 11/5 plane, near fastball arm speed, showed control of the zone, 66-68 mph. Straight changeup has near fastball arm speed, 74-77 mph. Schrimmer has shown excellent improvements since seeing him last in September of 2013, gaining five mph on his fastball.

8. Matt Kelly, RHP, St. Francis, 2014
5-foot-11, 175-pound right handed pitcher. Delivery shows effort, arm works from a high ¾ slot, loose arm action. Fastball has occasional arm side run, 82-84 mph, touched 85 mph. Changeup has sink, thrown with fastball arm speed, 73-77 mph. Curveball ranged from 65-72 mph. Also showed a sinker at 79-83, occasional run.

9. John McAllister, RHP, Oak Park-River Forest, 2014
6-foot-2, 235-pound right handed pitcher, strong lower half. Delivery has some effort, arm works from a high ¾ slot. Fastball is mostly straight, showed control of the zone, 82-84 mph. Curveball has 11/5 action, flashed some bite, near fastball arm speed, 66-70 mph. Changeup has cut, near fastball arm speed, 74-76 mph.

10 Jose Venegas, RHP/3B, Lyons Township, 2016
5-foot-10, 185-pound two-way player. Defensively, he showed solid range, soft hands, quick, fluid footwork and clean exchanges. Arm works short and loose from a high ¾ slot at 68 mph with accuracy. Ran an 8.45 60. At the plate he hits from a tall open stance with a short stride and quality balance. Has a line drive swing with short, level bat path and fluid rhythm. Exit velocity was 82 mph off a tee. On the mound his delivery has smooth rhythm and tempo with clean lines and some effort. Arm works quick and loose from high ¾ slot. Fastball was straight, sitting 77-80 mph. Throws his curveball with 11/5 shape and slurve action at 64-66 mph, for strikes. Changeup sits 69-71 mph with solid arm side run.

10. Christian Kimble, 3B/RHP, Jersey, 2015
6-foot-2, 220-pound two way player. On the mound works from an over the top slot, shorter arm action. Fastball is mostly straight, 80-82 mph, Curveball has 12/6 shape, 61-64 mph, showed the ability to throw it for strikes. Has feel for a straight change, showed control of the zone, 73-75 mph. Defensively showed the ability to play through the baseball, arm played well across the diamond, stayed on line with carry and accuracy (74 mph).  Offensively hits from the left side, balanced stance, short stride. Showed a pull side approach, 86 mph exit velocity from the tee, 7.25 runner in the 60.

Cole Barnes, RHP, Lincoln-Way East, 2015
Lanky right handed pitcher, 6-foot-3, 175-pounds. Arm works from an over the top slot, regular effort. Fastball is mostly straight, showed control, 78-79 mph, touched 80 mph. Curveball has 12/6 shape, thrown with arm speed, 66-69 mph. Changeup has occasional arm side action, 71-73 mph.

Aaron Braun, OF/LHP, McHenry West, 2015
5-foot-11, 165-pound two way player who hits right handed, throws left handed. From the outfield he showcased clean exchanges and a strong crow hop. Arm works long and stiff at 81 mph with solid carry. Ran a 7.57 60. At the plate he hits from a balanced stance with a short stride and quality balance through contact. Swing is short and level with solid bat speed. Exit velocity was 74 mph off the tee. On the mound he has a tall and fall delivery with some rhythm and regular effort. His arm works long and loose from a high ¾ slot. Fastball was straight, sitting 76-78 mph for consistent strikes. Curveball was thrown with fastball arm speed, has 11/5 shape and rolling action at 63-64 mph. Showed feel for his changeup, throwing it 65-67 mph with sinking action.

Matthew Collins, SS/RHP, Carmel Catholic, 2016
5-foot-11, 155-pound athletic two way player. On the infield he shows athletic movements, solid hands, quick feet, and clean exchanges. Arm works loose from high ¾ slot at 74 mph with some accuracy. Ran a 7.58 60. At the plate he hits from a balanced stance, short stride, solid balance through contact. Swing has fluid rhythm, level path, and solid bat speed. Exit velocity off the tee was 76 mph. On the mound he uses regular effort in his delivery. Arm works long and stiff from a high ¾ slot. Fastball flashed solid run, sitting 77-79 mph, touching 81 mph once. Curveball has 11/5 shape with rolling action, sitting 61-65 mph. Changeup was 58-63 mph with run and sink actions occasionally.

Connor Cook, SS/RHP, Lake Park, 2016
6-foot, 165-pound two-way athletic player. On the infield he plays through balls athletically with soft hands, fluid footwork, and clean exchanges. Showed above average range, as well as body control when playing on the run. Arm works loose from a high ¾ slot at 72 mph with solid accuracy and carry. Ran a 7.13 60. At the plate he hits from a wide, balanced stance with smooth loading action and heel lift stride. Swing is level, with quick bat speed. Exit velocity was 86 mph off a tee. On the mound his delivery has some rhythm with regular effort and clean lines. Arm works loose and quick from a high ¾ slot. Showed command of his fastball, sitting 74-75 mph, touching 79 mph once, with slight running action. Curveball was 60-64 mph with 11/5 shape and gradual break. Also throws a changeup at 65-67 mph.

Alex Crinigan, RHP, Hampshire, 2015
6-foot-4, 185-pound right handed pitcher. Arm works from an over the top slot, long high draw from his glove, regular effort. Fastball is straight, 75-77 mph, touched 78 mph. Curveball has 12/6 shape, with depth, 63-66 mph. throws a straight change, near fastball arm speed, occasional sink, 69-70 mph.

Joe Curci, 1B/RHP, Chicago Lab, 2016
6-foot-2, 175-pound two way player. Offensively hits from a balanced stance, short stride, slight arm bar load. Bat path has length, slightly uphill path. 75 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm plays at 61 mph across the diamond. On the mound fastball sits at 69-71 mph. Curveball has acts on 11/5 plane, 55-57 mph. Changeup has fade, 61-63 mph.

Jonathan Dahl, RHP, Geneseo, 2015
6-foot-1, 150-pound right handed pitcher, long legs, thin build. Delivery has effort, uptempo delivery, falls to the first base side. Arm action is longer , over the top slot. Fastball is straight, 78-79 mph, touched 80 mph. Curveball has 12/6 action, flashed occasional depth, 55-60 mph. Straight changeup works at 63-66 mph.

Garrett Davis, LHP/OF, Geneva, 2015
5-foot-11, 160-pound lefty two way player. In the outfield he moves naturally and athletically with quick feet and sound hands. Arm works long, from over the top at 79 mph with carry. At the plate he hits from a tall, open stance with smooth load, short stride, and excellent balance through contact. Has a fluid, gap-to-gap swing that is short with quality extension and solid bat speed. Exit velocity off the tee was 84 mph. On the mound his delivery has smooth rhythm, clean lines, and regular effort. Arm works from a high ¾ slot. His fastball was straight, sitting 73-75 mph, for strikes. His breaking ball was 64-67 mph with 11/5 shape and flashes of sharp, late bite. Changeup was straight, sitting 69-71 mph.

Shane Donovan, LHP/1B, Bartlett, 2016
5-foot-9, 165-pound two-way player. Offensively hits from a slightly wider stance, minimal stride, heel fit load, solid balance throughout. Bat path is short, gets occasional extension, line drive gap to gap approach. 76 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively showed the ability to move around the bag with feel. Arm plays at 67 mph across the diamond. On the mound arm works from a 3/4 slot, short arm action. Fastball is mostly straight, 70-71 mph. Breaking ball has 11/5 shape, 54-58 mph. Changeup has sink, 60-62 mph.

Shawn Feagin, RHP, La Salle-Peru, 2015
5-foot-10, 155-pound pitcher. Has an athletic, tall and fall style delivery with smooth rhythm, clean lines and an athletic finish with regular effort. Arm works loose, from a high ¾ slot. His fastball was 78-80 mph with slight run, and consistently in the zone. His breaking ball showed solid depth, late action, 12/6 shape, sitting 61-63 mph for strikes. Showed feel for his changeup, throwing it 69-72 mph with slight fading action.

Jack Feeley, OF/RHP, Metea Valley, 2016
6-foot-1, 153-pound lanky two way player. At the plate he hits from a wide stance with short stride to contact and solid balance. Has a line drive swing that is short and level. Exit velocity was 81 mph off a tee. From the outfield he showed solid hands and clean catch and release skills. Arm works long, from a high ¾ slot at 73 mph with some accuracy. On the mound he has a wide base setup, and uses a traditional up, down, and out delivery with level shoulders and square finish. Arm works long from a high ¾ slot. Fastball was consistently in the zone, sitting 66-68 mph, flashing 70 mph, with occasional run. Changeup was also consistently in the zone, sitting 63-64 mph with sink and run. Curveball was 58-60 mph with 11/5 shape and rolling break.

Talon File, MIF/RHP, Williamsville, 2017
5-foot-10, 150-pound two-way player. Offensively hits from a balanced stance, short stride, above average bat speed. Athletic hands, solid contact throughout his round, 84 mph exit velocity. Defensively plays with a long arm action, high 3/4 slot, accurate arm across the diamond (78 mph). 7.67 runner in the 60. On the mound works from a high 3/4 slot, short arm action, regular effort. Fastball is mostly straight, 76-77 mph, showed control of the zone. Curveball has 11/5 action, 60-63 mph. Changeup has slight fade, 60-62 mph, showed control.

Garrett Goetz, SS/RHP, Oswego East, 2017
6-foot, 150-pound two way player with a lanky frame. On the infield he showed solid hands and quick exchanges. Arm works short from a high ¾ slot at 70 mph with some accuracy. Ran a 7.51 60. At the plate he hits from a balanced setup with a short stride and solid balance through contact. Swing is long and uphill with solid bat speed and a pull side approach. Exit velocity was 74 mph off a tee. On the mound his delivery has some rhythm, good direction, and regular effort. Has a long, stabbing arm action that comes from a high ¾ slot. Showed feel for his fastball, consistently throwing it for strikes with slight running action, sitting 76-77 mph. Curveball was 63-65 mph with 11/5 shape and gradual break. Changeup was 69-72 mph with flashes of sinking action.

Cooper Hake, 3B/RHP, Lincoln Community, 2016
5-foot-10, 170-pound two-way player. At the plate he hits from an open stance, smooth load, leg kick stride, and maintains balance through contact. Swing is short and level, with a pull side approach. Exit velocity off the tee was 76 mph. Defensively, his arm works short, from a high ¾ slot, at 70 mph with some accuracy. Ran an 8.09 60. On the mound his delivery has some rhythm and above average effort. Arm works short, from a high ¾ slot with some looseness. Had feel for his fastball, throwing it 74-77 mph for strikes. Also showed feel for his changeup, throwing it 65-68 mph with deceptive fading action. His curveball was 57-60 mph with 11/5 shape and gradual action.

Colin Jamison, 3B/RHP, Lake Park, 2016
5-foot-10, 170-pound two way player. Defensively, showed solid hands and fields the ball athletically. Arm works short and loose from over the top at 75 mph with some accuracy. Ran a 7.68 60. At the plate he hits from a wide stance, backward loading action, short stride, solid balance through the swing. Swing is long and uphill with stiff rhythm and solid bat speed. Exit velocity was 81 mph off a tee. On the mound his delivery has slow rhythm, regular effort, stays on clean lines. Fastball was straight, sitting 70-71 mph. Throws a breaking ball with 11/5 shape, slurve action, sitting 60-61 mph. His changeup was 65-67 mph with slight run and sink, for strikes.

Ryan Jones, 3B/RHP, Waubonsie Valley, 2015
5-foot-11, 175-pound two way player. At the plate he hits from a balanced stance with a smooth load and leg kick trigger. Maintains balance through contact. Has a short, line drive swing with quality extension and showed the ability to drive the ball gap-to-gap with fluid rhythm and quick bat speed. Exit velocity off the tee was 86 mph. On the infield he showed soft hands and fluid feet. Arm works stiff, from a high ¾ slot at 72 mph with accuracy and carry. On the mound he uses a tilt and topple style delivery with regular effort and some rhythm. Arm works long and loose from a high ¾ slot. His fastball was straight, sitting 76-78 mph for strikes. His curveball was 59-63 mph with 11/5 shape. Had feel for his changeup, throwing it for strikes with flashes of sink at 71-74 mph.

Noah Konie, 1B/LHP, Huntley, 2017
6-foot, 200-pound left-handed hitting two-way player with a strong body. At the plate he hits from a balanced stance with a heel lift load and launch mechanism and maintains balance through the swing. Swing is short and sweet with above average bat speed and pull side approach, consistently making strong contact. Exit velocity was 84 mph off a tee. Defensively, showed soft hands and solid feel around the bag. Arm works short, from high ¾ slot at 72 mph with some accuracy and carry. Ran a 7.94 60. On the mound he uses a tall and fall delivery with clean lines, some rhythm, regular effort, a square landing and athletic finish. Arm works long, from a high ¾ slot. Threw his fastball for strikes, sitting 73-75 mph with flashes of run. Displayed feel for his changeup, throwing it 66-67 mph with sink, for strikes. Curveball was 59-61 mph with 12/6 shape and loose action.

Blake Kons, RHP/1B, Niles West, 2015
6-foot, 170-poundtwo way player. At the plate he hits from a balanced, crouched stance with a smooth loading action and a leg kick trigger mechanism, and maintains solid balance through contact. Has a line drive swing with a long path and above average bat speed. Exit velocity was 74 mph off a tee. At first base he showed solid foot work around the bag. Arm works short, from a high ¾ slot at 72 mph. Ran an 8.07 60. On the mound his delivery works with some rhythm and regular effort. Arm works from the same high ¾ slot with a long action on the backside. Fastball was straight, sitting 77-79 mph. Throws a slider with downer shape at 66-69 mph, for strikes. Changeup was 66-68 mph with arm side run.

Sam Lamotte, RHP, Warren, 2016
5-foot-10, 140-pound right handed pitcher, thin build, can add plenty of strength. Works from a full windup delivery, arm action is long, low ¾ slot. Fastball has sink, flashing run to his arm side, showed control for the zone, 76-78 mph, touched 79 mph. Curveball has 11/5 shape, decelerated arm action, sweeping action, 58-62 mph. Changeup has sink, showed above average feel for the pitch, 67-69 mph. Lamotte has high projection, his arm works clean from a unique slot which adds movement down in the zone.

Logan Cody, RHP/SS, Glenwood, 2017
5-foot-11, 145-pound left handed hitting two-way player with an athletic build. On the mound he uses a drop and drive delivery, choppy rhythm, good direction and clean lines, and regular effort. Arm works short and stiff from a high ¾ slot. Fastball was straight, sitting 75-76 mph. Curveball has 11/5 shape and sweeping action at 62-66 mph. Changeup was 64-67 mph with flashes of sink and cut action. At the plate he hits from a balanced stance and uses a toe tap load and stride sequence. Has a short, level, line drive swing with fluid rhythm. Exit velocity off a tee was 72 mph.

Jon Miranda, MIF/RHP, Lyons, 2016
5-foot-7, 150-pound two-way player. Offensively hits from a slightly open and narrow stance, taller setup, high hands setup. Well above average bat speed, 88 mph exit velocity from the tee, bat path is level, gap to gap approach, overall above average offensive abilities. Defensively uses a longer arm action across the diamond (73 mph), showed some accuracy. Hands work defensively, can play through the baseball more. On the mound fastball is straight with occasional sink, 77-79 mph. Curveball 11/5 shape, 62-63 mph. Changeup sits at 65-66 mph.

Blake Nicolls, 3B/RHP, Metea Valley, 2016
5-foot-11, 170-pound two-way player. Defensively shows fluid feet, solid hands, and clean exchanges. Arm works loose from a high ¾ slot at 68 mph with strong accuracy. At the plate he hits from a balanced stance with a smooth loading action, short stride, and solid balance. Swing is long and level with an opposite field approach. Exit velocity was 79 mph off a tee. On the mound he showcased feel for three pitches. Has an up-down-out style delivery with clean lines. Arm works loose from a high ¾ slot. His fastball was straight, sitting 73-74 mph, flashing 77 mph once. His curveball was 63-65 mph with 11/5 shape, gradual break, and consistently in the zone. Changeup was 64-68 mph with fading action.

Connor O’Keefe, LHP, Barrington, 2016
6-foot-2, 200-pound left handed pitcher. Arm works from a high ¾ slot, shorter arm action, regular effort. Fastball had slight sinking action, mostly down, 70-71 mph, topped out at 72 mph. Curveball had 11/5 shape, gradual action, 58-59 mph. Changeup is thrown with near fastball arm speed, 62-65 mph, slight sinking action.

Tyler Sanchez, LHP, Round Lake, 2015
6-foot-1, 190-pound left handed pitcher. Tall and fall delivery, deliberate delivery, smooth rhythm, works online. Arm action is loose, high ¾ arm slot, regular effort. Four seam fastball is mostly straight, showed the ability to command it, also showed a two seam fastball with arm side run, fastball ranged 72-75 mph, touched 76 mph. Curveball has 11/5 tilt, 67-73 mph, showed feel for the zone. Changeup has fade, showed the ability to control it, 66-67 mph.

Diaz Saunderson, LHP/1B, Lincoln Park, 2016
6-foot, 177-pound left-handed hitting two way player with a lanky frame. Offensively, hits from a tall, balanced stance with a short stride. Swing is long and uphill with solid bat speed. Exit velocity off the tee was 82 mph. At first base he showed feel and quality footwork around the bag. Arm works long, from a high ¾ slot at 71 mph with strong accuracy. Ran an 8.4 60. On the mound his delivery has some rhythm with clean lines. Arm works short, from a high ¾ slot. Showed the ability to command his fastball in the zone, throwing it 69-71 mph with sink. Had feel for his curveball, throwing it 59-61 mph with 11/5 shape, sweeping break, for strikes. Changeup was 65-68 mph with sink.

Steven Stachyra, 1B/RHP, Marquette Catholic (IN), 2015
6-foot-1, 170-pound athletic, lanky two way player. Defensively he showed solid actions and quality hands around the bag. Arm works short and over the top at 71 mph with accuracy. Ran a 7.5 60. At the plate he hits from a balanced stance with smooth, backward loading action and maintains balance through contact. Has a line drive swing with a short, level path and above average bat speed. Exit velocity was 81 mph off a tee. On the mound his fastball sat at 71-73 mph, mostly straight. Curveball was 45-48 mph and change up sat 56-59 mph.

Ryan Stanicek, OF/LHP, Boylan Catholic, 2015
5-foot-11, 165-pound left handed hitting two way player with advanced foot speed. Ran a 6.83 60. In the outfield his quick feet move well and work fluidly as he plays through the ball athletically. Arm works long and loose from over the top at 79 mph with some carry. At the plate he hits with an open stance, short stride and maintains balance. Swing is short and level with solid bat speed. Exit velocity was 83 mph off a tee. On the mound he pitches from the stretch only, using a tall and fall delivery with smooth rhythm and some effort. Arm works long and from a high ¾ slot. Had feel for his fastball, throwing it 75-78 mph with occasional arm side action. Curveball was 58-60 mph with 11/5 shape and gradual break. Changeup was 68-71 mph with sinking action.

Anthony Stopoulos, LHP/OF, United Township, 2014
5-foot-11, 160-pound right handed hitting, left handed throwing two way player. Defensively showed solid hands, clean exchanges, and plays through the ball athletically. Arm works long from a high ¾ slot at 76 mph with accuracy. Ran a 7.11 60. At the plate he hits from a wide, balanced stance. Swing is short and uphill with choppy rhythm. Exit velocity off the tee was 78 mph. On the mound he uses a tall and fall delivery with some effort. His fastball 70-73 mph with flashes of cutting action.
