Stock Report: 2014 LHP Ross Learnard

Steve Nielsen
Scouting Director - Illinois

Today stock report is on Ross Learnard. Learnard is a left-handed pitcher from Catlin HS who we saw this summer at the Open Identification Prospect Showcase in Normal, IL. The lefty impressed with his abilities on the mound and his projectable frame. He showcased himself as a two-way player who displayed a well-rounded skill set and feel for the game.

Learnard is a lanky athletic 6-foot-1, 160-pound two-way player who ran a 7.29 60 and was clocked at 81 mph from the outfield. Offensively, he has a balanced approach, which allows him to hit the ball to all fields. His true potential seems eminent on the mound, where he creates deceptive angles from the left side featuring an upper-70s fastball, touching 81. His curveball and slider showed good separation, with the slider proving to be more of an out pitch at 69-72 mph. His changeup showed some arm-side run at 69-70 mph, but most of his pitches showed better life going away from his arm side.

Learnard will be one of those left handed arms to keep a close eye on as he shows a lot of promise with above average command and solid life coming from the left side.
