Top Prospect Games - St. Louis: Pitcher Analysis

Over the last week we will have been rolling out our analysis from the St. Louis - Top Prospect Games on June 6th. This event featured some of the top uncommitted 2018 prospects from Illinois and Missouri. Today we continue the analysis by taking a look at the pitchers in attendance.

Top Pitching Prospects

1. Blake Struble, LHP, Carrollton, 2018
6-foot-5, 210-pound, strong, durable, athletically built, projectable, left-handed pitcher. High upside, uncommitted arm in the 2018 class. Smooth, repeatable delivery, stays on-line with an open-toe landing. Short, quick arm action out of a high ¾ slot. Pitches with intent and throws all three of his offerings aggressively. Fastball, gets downhill tilt, straight action, thrown for strikes and sat 83-85 mph, touching 86. Slider, throws it with conviction, 10/4 shape, short, tight break; 71-75 mph and flashed the ability to back-foot right-handed hitters. Changeup, mostly straight action, located down in the zone, 81 mph.

2. Cody Hacker, LHP, Holt (MO), 2018
Hacker is a 5-foot-10 180-pound left-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2018 class. Hacker is an over the top lefty with a three-pitch mix, fastball worked 84-86 mph, some with late run, 12-to-6 breaking ball at 69-71 mph, and flashes a change up at 75-76 mph, throws high number of strikes, repeats controlled delivery, loose arm action with smooth rhythm, throws with regular effort and works down hill.

3. McCade Brown, RHP, Normal West, 2018
6-foot-5, 185-pound, long, lean, projectable right-handed pitcher. Loose arm and projects for more velocity with continued physical development. Rocker step delivery, works with rhythm, stays on-line with home plate and lands square. Arm works quick and out of a high ¾ slot. Fastball, late, arm-side-run action, thrown for strikes and sat 83-84, touching 86 mph. Also, mixed in a slider with, 11/5 action, sharp, tight spin at times, ranged between 65-70 mph. Changeup played at 70-73 mph.

4. Evan Warrington, RHP, Sacred Heart-Griffin, 2018
6-foot, 170-pound, athletically built, right-handed pitcher. Delivery works from the first base side of the rubber, some rhythm, slightly across his body and finishes athletically. Arm is quick and from an over-the-top slot. Fastball works straight, sat mostly 85-86 mph in game play. Mixed in a 12/6 curveball, consistently thrown for strikes and 68-69 mph. Flashed one changeup, fastball arm speed, straight action and 79 mph.

5. Jack Adams, RHP, Kirkwood (MO), 2018
Adams is a 6-foot-2 180-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2018 class. Adams was effective with three pitches, fastball was 82-85 mph, works both sides of the plate, some with late run, working inside to RHH, breaking ball has sharp 12-to-6 action, 63-66 mph, also throws slider out of same release point, more 11-to-5 action, 69-71 mph, late action, high three quarters release and same arm speed with all pitches making it difficult for hitters to see out of hand, hides ball well, works entire zone, strike thrower, challenges hitters.  

6. Tyler Labedz, RHP, TF South, 2018
6-foot-3, 175-pound, athletically built right-handed pitcher with plenty of room for added physical development. Delivery works with some deception, slightly across body and toe-closed landing. Arm works long and out of an over-the-top slot. Worked a quick inning in his one-inning stint. Fastball worked mostly straight, thrown for strikes and sat 83-84 mph. Changeup flashed above-average feel and arm-side action, 75-76 mph. Slider, thrown for strikes, 70-71 mph.

7. Will Gilmer, RHP, Sikeston (MO), 2018
Gilmer is a 6-foot-1 175-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2018 class. Gilmer worked a quick inning with a three pitch mix, showed command of all pitches, has smooth tempo in delivery, throws with regular effort, over the top release, fastball 84-85 mph, late life with running action, curveball has mostly 11-to-5 shape, 71-73 mph, change up at 71 mph with fading action, strikes with all three pitches, commands the zone with fastball, good feel for the mound.   

8. Matt Kesel, RHP, Francis Howell Central (MO), 2018
Kesel is a 6-foot-4 215-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2018 class. Kesel has a high three quarters release, quick arm speed, works down the mound, in line stride, fastball at 86-89 mph with more in the tank, projectable frame, strong build, some fastballs flashed late running action, breaking ball 64-66 mph, 12-to-6 action.   

9. Dalton Lambert, RHP, Harrisburg, 2018
6-foot-3, 190-pound, strong bodied, durable, right-handed pitcher. Works from the far first base side of the rubber, stays on-line and toe lands closed. Quick arm action from an over-the-top slot. Fastball works straight, tilt when down in zone, ranged between 80-84 mph, topped at 85. Flashed a sharp 12/6 curveball at times, thrown aggressively for strikes, 70-72 mph. Mixed in one changeup at 72 mph.

10. Kevin Winston, RHP, Rockwood Summit (MO), 2018
Winston is a 6-foot-3 195-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2018 class. Winston has a quick tempo in his delivery, short arm circle with over the top release, fastball at 81-83 mph, some with late running action, showed command of a sharp breaking 11-to-5 breaking ball, competes well on the mound, threw strikes with both pitches. Flashed a changeup in warmups, fade action.

Graham Bender, RHP, Glenwood, 2018
6-foot, 175-pound, well-proportioned right-handed pitcher. Deliberate, repeatable delivery, with slight deception. Short arm action out of a high ¾ window. Attacks hitters and worked a quick inning. Fastball works mostly straight, thrown for strikes and sat 81-82 mph. Curveball, 12/6 shape, occasional feel for the zone at 64-65 mph. Also, flashed a changeup for a strike at 71 mph.

Collin Brougham, RHP, Park Hill South (MO), 2018
Brougham is a 6-foot-2 163-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2018 class. Brougham has a high three quarters release, works inline down the mound, smooth tempo during delivery delivery, repeats, throws with regular effort, 81-83 mph fastball, breaking ball 77-79 mph, 11-to-5 action, athletic frame with room to grow.

Matthew Grubb, RHP, Lakes Community, 2018
5-foot-10, 170-pound, right-handed pitcher with a strong lower half. Uptempo delivery, works from the far third base side of the rubber, stays on-line, lands square and regular effort throughout. Clean arm out of a high ¾ slot. Fastball works mostly straight, occasional cut, 78-82 mph, touching 83 mph. Mixed in a slider, 11/5 shape, feel, at 71-74 mph.

Evan Hubert, RHP, CBC (MO), 2018
Hubert is a 5-foot-9 175-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2018 class. Hubert worked 82-83 mph with fastball, 66-69 mph with curveball, 12-to-6 action, some sharp, controllable, 76 mph change up, over the top release, drop and drive type delivery, loose per the top arm slot, in line stride and aggressive down the mound, works the bottom of the zone with pitches, simple and repeatable delivery.

Pierce Jones, RHP, East Richland, 2018
6-foot-4, 153-pound, long limbed, right-handed pitcher with plenty of room to add to his frame. Drop and drive delivery, smooth rhythm, high-front side and some rhythm throughout. Arm works long, stab action and out of an over-the-top slot. Fastball sat 79-81, touching 82 mph, works straight with occasional cut. Curveball, 12/6 action, 65-66 mph. Also, mixed in a slider, 10/4 shape, 70-72 mph.

Ricky Maddock, LHP, Kirkwood (MO), 2018
Maddock is a 5-foot-10 185-pound left-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2018 class. Maddock threw a high percentage of strikes with fastball at 80-81 mph, over the top release, works to both sides of the plate, controlled delivery, repeats, breaking ball at 67-79 mph, some flashing late 12-to-6 action, showed change up at 74 mph.  

Braden Mahurin, RHP, Dixon (MO), 2018
Mahurin is a 6-foot-1 175-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2018 class. Mahurin has an over the top release, throw with some effort, strong frame, works downhill, threw mainly fastball curveball, fastball at mostly 82-84 mph, changes hitters eye level effectively, sharp 11-to-5 breaking ball, late break, 68-71 mph, quick inning of work, attacking the zone and challenging hitters.

Ian McMahon, LHP, Benton, 2018
5-foot-10, 170-pound, left-handed pitcher. Worked a quick inning. Smooth, repeatable delivery, works on-line with home plate and lands square. Long draw out of the glove, throws out of a short, over-the-top window. Fastball, thrown for strikes, straight action and sat 78-80 mph. Curveball works 1/7, short, tight break, 72-75 mph.  

Noah Pingel, RHP, Francis Howell North (MO), 2018
Pingel is a 5-foot-10 185-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2018 class. Pingel threw mostly fastballs during his inning of work, sitting mostly 83-84 mph, works downhill with over the top release, throws with some effort, stride is slightly open at times, showed a 12-to-6 breaking ball at 79 mph, strong build, uses lower half well.

Zeb Roos, LHP, Lindbergh (MO), 2018
Roos is a 5-foot-10 185-pound left-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2018 class. Roos has a smooth delivery, throws with some effort but body stays under control, over the top release, in stride, worked fastball and curveball during inning, challenged hitters and threw strikes, fastball at 82-84 mph, some on a downhill plane, breaking ball had depth at 69-70 mph, 2-to-7 shape, throws for strike.

Andrew Schimmoler, RHP, Oswego, 2018
6-foot-5, 175-pound, long, lean right-handed pitcher with plenty of room for continued physical development. Uptempo delivery, high leg lift, works slightly across his body and lands open. Arm is athletic and quick from a high ¾ slot with some effort throughout. Fastball, straight action, sat 80-82 mph. Curveball, maintains arm speed, 11/5 shape, 68-69 mph.

Sam Shaffer, RHP, Liberty (MO), 2018
Shaffer is a 6-foot-1 170-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2018 class. Shaffer is a submarine style pitcher, loose arm action, shows ability to repeat, delivery has deception working slightly across body, fastball at 73-76 mph, running action, slider has 10-to-4 action, some with late run, 64-67 mph, fastball arm speed and fastball release point, making it hard to pick up spin out of hand,

Peyton Soria, RHP, Excelsior Springs (MO), 2018
Soria is a 6-foot-2 190-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2018 class. Soria has a projectable frame with wide shoulders, comes from a high three quarters arm slot, throws with regular effort and a loose arm action, fastball at 82-83 mph, some on a downhill plane and late running action, slider has tight spin with late action, 77-78 mph, showed a curveball at 67-70 mph, 10-to- action, good inning of work, challenging hitters, plus movement on all pitches.

Ryan Turgeon, RHP, Nazareth, 2018
6-foot-5, 250-pound, extra-large right-handed pitcher. Delivery works with some rhythm, coiled high leg-kick, stays on-line and lands square. Arm works short, clean and out of a high ¾ slot. Fastball flashed arm-side-run and sat 80-83, topping out at 84. Curveball thrown near fastball arm speed, depth, 12/6 shape and 65-66 mph. Also, mixed in a changeup, maintains arm speed, straight action and ranged between 69-75 mph.

Colten Weber, RHP, Jackson (MO), 2017
Weber is a 6-foot-3 175-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2017 class. Weber recently signed with Crowder CC, fastball touched 88 mph several times during outing, worked 86-88 mph, some with late run, loose high three quarters arm slot, breaking ball flashed sharpness, 11-to-5 action, 73-76 mph, change up at 73 mph, repeats delivery, threw strikes, works slightly across the body.
