Unsigned Senior Spotlight: RHP Mike Ringer

Steve Nielsen
Scouting Director - Illinois

Today’s unsigned senior spotlight is on Mike Ringer. Ringer is an athletic two-way player hailing from Springfield Southeast HS. Last season he became a big contributor to the Spartans as he was selected to the Central State Eight All-Conference team.

In 2012 he posted a 2-2 record with a 3.22 ERA on the mound. Over his 48 1/3 innings pitched he struck out 67 while walking 37. Offensively, he hit .271 with 13 RBI.

Ringer is a 5-foot-10, 160-pound two way player who showed well both as a position player and on the mound. On the mound, Ringer operates from a high ¾ arm slot and shows good hand acceleration. His heavy fastball sat at 84-85 mph, topping out at 86.  Ringer’s breaking ball has an 11-to-5 shape (68-71 mph) with sharp break and fastball arm speed. With more polish his breaking ball shows potential to be a big time out pitch. His repertoire is rounded out with a 78-81 mph changeup.

As a position player, he displays natural instincts in the field and showed a velocity of 85 mph across the diamond with a quick arm action. Offensively, Ringer features a long swing with barrel whip through the zone and created backspin and carry when he squared the ball up.

Ringer is preparing for a big senior season as he should be one of the more highly sought after prospects in central Illinois.
