Over the next several weeks,  we’ll be publishing our team spotlights during the 2021 spring season, touching on programs spanning all state classifications. Perennially, we’ve submitted a Preseason Questionnaire to high school head coaches across the entire state. Their responses have been flooding in and we’re using the detailed insight they’ve provided in our team-by-team analysis.

TOP PLAYERS

Harper Kennedy 3B / RHP / Maize South , KS / 2021

The left handed hitting Senior will be a guy the Mavericks plan on playing all over the field during the 2021 campaign.  Harper will also be a guy they rely on to pick up some innings on the mound as well.

Colin Johnson C / OF / Maize South, KS / 2022

The Junior will make the shift from the outfield to behind the plate this Spring for the Mavericks.  The potential power in the bat will put him near the top of the order and be counted on to be a run producer in 2021.

Owen Bailey C / Maize South , KS / 2022

The Junior will be a guy the Mavericks will count on the lineup in every game this spring.  Owen will get some time behind the plate and mix in at first base as well.

Joshua Darrenkamp OF / LHP / Maize South, KS / 2022

Josh returns to the Mavericks to continue to patrol the OF. Josh's speed and ability to read balls off the bat make help make the Maverick outfield a solid D. With Josh's speed and ability to put the bat on the ball will mean Josh will hit near the top of the line up.

JAKE JOHNSON

OF / MAIZE SOUTH, KS / 2021

The Senior's speed and arm strength makes him the projected opening day center fielder.  The Mavericks will count on him to use his speed and on base skills to put pressure on the opposing defenses this upcoming season.

COLIN SHIELDS

1B / MAIZE SOUTH, KS / 2021

The Senior will be counted on by the coaching staff to be the leader on the field for the Mavericks this spring.  Colin will be anchoring the first base spot for Maize South this Spring and will be a major key in their run production throughout the season.

OUTLOOK

The Mavericks strengths this upcoming season will be their ability to compete through their lineup with guys that have a good overall offensive approach.  The coaching staff also likes their ability to defend at a high level.

The biggest question mark heading into the season is the lack of Varsity experience on the mound.  Getting these guys up to speed early on will be a major factor in the win/loss column.
