Top Unsigned Prospect Showcase: Corner Infielders Analysis

On Sunday, October 30, Prep Baseball Report Kansas/Missouri held the Top Unsigned Prospect Showcase at Hoover Field in Wichita, Kansas.  Nearly 50 players from the 2018 and 2017 classes participated. 

Player profiles have been updated with profile pictures, velos, running times and video.  College recruiters can now update their ScoutPlus dashboard accordingly.  And players can take advantage of the ProspectPlus dashboard.

We will take an in-depth look at the corner infielders from event today.  This group produced five of the top infield velos for the event and five of the top exit velos of the event.

Kansas Corner Infielders

Caleb Dameron, 3B, Campus (KS), 2018
Dameron is a 6-foot-3 210-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.85 60 and a 4.65 home-to-first.  He has an 88 mph exit velo. At the plate, slight open stance to slightly close stride, smooth lower half load, loose hand creating a quick bat, mostly middle to opposite field contact during batting evaluations.  On the infield, 74 mph positional velo, short high three quarters release, fluid footwork to the ball, clean exchange with somewhat accurate throws. 

Dalton Doyle, 3B, Olathe North (KS), 2018
Doyle is a 5-foot-11 190-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Kansas’ 2017 class.  He ran a 7.22 60 and a 4.30 home-to-first, on of the top RHH times.  He has a 94 mph exit velo, top RHH exit velo of the event. At the plate, starts with a wide stance, controlled leg lift, body stays under control, explosive and strong hands, aggressive swing with power to pull side, slight arm bar, quick bat speed, consistent hard contact during batting evaluations.  On the infield, 83 mph positional velo, top infield velo of the event, quick catch and throw, high three quarters release, feet work with hands, soft hands, athletic actions, accurate throws.

Dalton Engle, 3B, Riley County (KS), 2018
Engle is a 6-foot-1 60-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.27 60 and a 4.50 home-to-first.  He has an 82 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced stance, controlled load with reverse toe tap, slightly closed stride, showed ability to go the other way, hands work inside the ball, short path to contact.  On the infield, 81 mph positional velo, one of the top infield velos of the event, over the top release, fields ball in athletic position, momentum after catch with fluid footwork, clean exchange, mostly accurate throws.

Taylor Foss, 3B/SS, Shawnee Mission West (KS), 2018
Foss is a 5-foot-11 196-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 8.09 60 and a 4.72 home-to-first.  He has an 80 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced stance, controlled lower half load with minimal hand movement, level path through the zone, mostly middle to opposite field line drives during hitting evaluations, flashed pull power.  On the infield, 82 mph positional velo, one of the top infield velos of the event, over the top release, fluid footwork with momentum through the catch, quick exchange, mostly accurate throws.

Connor Hughes, 1B, Olathe North (KS), 2018
Hughes is a durable 5-foot-11 185-pound right-handed hitting first baseman in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 7.59 60 and 4.78 home to first.  He has an 89 mph exit velo, one of the top RHH velos. At the plate, balanced stance, smooth load into back side, short stride, aggressive swing, takes a hack, pull side power with mostly pull side contact during batting practice, quick bat speed. On the infield, 74 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, fluid footwork to the ball creating momentum to throw, accurate throws. 

Holden Missey, 1B, Blue Valley Northwest (KS), 2018
Missey is a 6-foot-3 210-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.45 60 and a 4.46 home-to-first.  He has a 94 mph exit velo, top RHH exit velo for the event. At the plate, balanced stance, smooth load, aggressive hands with explosive bat speed, hard middle to pull contact in hitting evaluations, fast bat speed.  On the infield, 82 mph positional velo, one of the top infield velos of the event, high three quarters arm slot, accurate throws with back spin carry, athletic footwork working to the ball, clean exchange. 

Caleb Ostronic, 1B, Eudora (KS), 2018
Ostronic is a 6-foot-1 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 8.33 60 and a 4.90 home to first.  He has an 80 mph exit velo. At the plate, athletic stance, short stride, smooth load with little hand movement, swing produced middle to opposite field line drives.  On the infield, 70 mph exit velo, over the top release, fluid actions with clean exchange, accurate throws.

Cole Summers, 3B/2B, Shawnee Mission West (KS), 2018
Summers is a 5-foot-11 200-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.25 60 and a 4.65 home to first and a 92 mph exit velo, one of the top RHH velos. At the plate, slightly open stance, short stride, minimal hand load, accelerated hands through contact, showed some pull side power, contact mostly to middle of field in hitting evaluations.  On the infield, 76 mph positional velo, fields ball in athletic position, momentum after catch with fluid footwork, over the top release, clean exchange, somewhat accurate throws.

Jacob Taylor, 1B, Maize (KS), 2017
Taylor is a 6-foot-3 185-pound left-handed hitting first baseman in Kansas’ 2017 class.  He ran a 7.17 60 and a 4.13 home-to-first, one of the top LHH times.  He has an 89 mph exit velo, one of the top LHH velos. At the plate, tall and slightly open in stance, in line stride, level bat path with quick hands, ga-to-gap approach with mostly opposite field line drives in hitting evaluations, some with back spin.  On the infield, three quarters release, quick and athletic footwork to the ball, plays through the catch with momentum to throw, mostly accurate throws.

Casey Wulfkuhle, 1B, Shawnee Heights (KS), 2017
Wulfkuhle is a 6-foot 175-pound left-handed hitting outfielder in Kansas’ 2017 class.  He ran a 7.05 60 and a 4.25 home-to-first.  He has a 74 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced stance, minimal load, level path, body stays under control, hands dominate swing.  On the infield, 83 mph positional velo, top infield velo of the event, quick catch and throw, high three quarters release, athletic footwork to the ball, clean exchange, mostly accurate throws.
