St. Louis Open: Corner Infielders Analysis

On February 10, Prep Baseball Report - Missouri held the St. Louis Open at the Sports Barn in Wentzville, Missouri.  Over 70 players attended in the 2021 to 2018 classes. 

Players can now updated their profiles with a ProspectPlus subscription, while scouts and recruiters can add players on the ScoutPlus dashboard.

Player profiles have been updated with profile picture, running times, velocities, and videos.  Today will take a closer look at the corner infielders from the event. Players are listed in alphabetical order below.

The corner infielders included nine players in the 2020-21 classes with thirteen players total.  Three players had positional velos of 80 mph or better and four players had an exit velo of 88 mph or better.  Here is a closer look at the corner infielders from the St. Louis Open Showcase.

Corner Infielders

Sam Altobella 3B / RHP / Vianney, MO / 2020

Altobella is an athletic 6-foot 185-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 7.48 60 and has an 89 mph exit velocity. At the plate, open stance, smooth load to back side, some pre-pitch rhythm in hands, short stride, middle to pull side contact, aggressive bat speed, occasional pull power.  On the infield, 80 mph positional velocity, high three quarters arm slot, loose arm action, smooth footwork to the ball, momentum to throw after the catch, controlled athletic actions, mostly accurate throws with carry.

Cole Buckner 1B / RHP / St. Mary's, MO / 2020

Buckner is a 6-foot-1 202-pound right-handed hitting first baseman in St. Mary’s 2020 class.  He ran a 8.61 60 and has an 85 mph exit velocity.  At the plate, starts open, controlled leg lift with short stride, minimal load in hands, loose and quick bat speed, level through the zone, gap to gap approach.  On the infield, 73 mph velo at first base, reverse pivot and high three quarter arm slot, momentum with feet after the catch, fields ball out front in athletic position.

Robert Emmenegger, III RHP / 1B / De Smet Jesuit , MO / 2021

Emmenegger is a lean 6-foot-2 145-pound right-handed hitting first baseman in Missouri’s 2021 class.  He ran a 8.19 60 and has a 75 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced stance with simple movements, in line stride, level bat path, gap to gap approach, high finish in hands.  On the infield, 69 mph positional velocity, quick to the ball with footwork, high three quarters release, fluid and clean exchange, mostly accurate throws.

Ryan Frazier 3B / C / Fort Zumwalt North, MO / 2019

Frazier is an athletic 6-foot-1 183-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 7.62 60 and has a 94 mph exit velocity. At the plate, thin and open stance, controlled leg lift, in line stride, some lift to bat path, quick bat speed, hands generate bat whip, hard middle to pull side contact.  On the infield, 79 mph positional velocity, three quarters arm slot, hands and feet work together, clean transfers with feet creating momentum through the catch. 

Anthony Gamma 3B / SS / Chaminade , MO / 2019

Gamma is a 5-foot-10 170-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 7.37 60 and has an 80 mph exit velocity.  At the plate, starts with wide base, slight crouch in stance, pre-pitch rhythm in hands, level bat path through extension, gap to gap approach.  On the infield, 75 mph positional velocity, over the top release, quick the ball with feet, clean glove to hand transfers, mostly accurate throws. 

Gage Goss 3B / RHP / Springfield Catholic, MO / 2020

Goss is a long and lean 6-foot-1 175-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 8.00 60 and has an 83 mph exit velocity.  At the plate, balanced set up, smooth weight shift into back leg, minimal hand load, short in line stride, aggressive bat speed, slight lift to bat path, loose hands, gap to gap line drives.  On the infield, 75 mph positional velocity, high three quarters arm slot, gains ground after the catch with feet, fluid actions to the ball, mostly accurate throws.

Anthony Klein 3B / RHP / Parkway Central, MO / 2020

Klein is a 6-foot-1 180-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Missouri’s 2020 class. He ran a 7.40 60 and has a 90 mph exit velocity.  At the plate, starts in slightly open base, athletic position, quick tempo to load, slight rotation with hands to lode, quick aggressive swing, fast bat speed, occasional pull side power, middle to pull side drives during hitting evaluations.  On the infield, 80 mph positional velocity, short over the top release, quick exchange, hands and feet work together, quick to the ball with momentum to throw after the catch, lean frame with room to add strength. 

Ryan Malzahn RHP / 1B / O'Fallon Christian , MO / 2020

Malzahn is a long and lean 6-foot-4 165-pound right-handed hitting first baseman in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 7.94 60 and has an 84 mph exit velocity. At the plate, starts slightly open, minimal load, short stride, quick hands with level path, stays on ball, hands generate bat whip. On the infield, 75 mph positional velocity, short three quarters arm action, fields ball out from in athletic position, fluid footwork to throw. 

Austin Mann 1B / OF / Liberty North, MO / 2021

Mann is a 6-foot 185-pound right-handed hitting first baseman in Missouri’s 2021 class.  He ran a 8.06 60 and has an 82 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced stance, no wasted movement to load, short to contact with high finish in hands, gap to gap approach.  On the infield, 76 mph positional velocity, quick to the ball with footwork, reverse pivot to throw to second base, high three quarters release, clean exchanges.  

Mathew Nolan RHP / 3B / CBC, MO / 2021

Nolan is a strong and long-limbed 6-foot-1 170-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Missouri’s 2021 class.  He ran a 7.56 60 and has an 87 mph exit velocity.  At the plate, starts tall and slightly open, stays open with stride, middle to pull side contact.  On the infield, 71 mph positional velocity, quick catch and throw, short over the top release, clean exchanges, fields ball in athletic position, feet create momentum to throw after the catch.

Charlie Pratt RHP / 3B / Festus High School, MO / 2019

Pratt is a 6-foot 155-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 8.01 60 and has an 83 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced stance, minimal load, no wasted movement in hands, leg lift to inline stride, level path through the ball, gap to gap line drives.  On the infield, 78 mph positional velocity, over the top arm slot, clean exchanges, gains ground to 1B after the catch, fluid feet to the ball, accurate throws.

Gabe Serri 1B / RHP / St. Dominic, MO / 2021

Serri is a long an lean 6-foot-1 175-pound right-handed hitting first baseman in Missouri’s 2021 class.  He ran a 7.87 60 and has an 88 mph exit velocity. At the plate, open stance, hands load with in line stride, slight lift to bat path, flashed pull side power.  On the infield, 71 mph positional velocity, reverse pivot to throw to 2B, clean exchange with soft hands, quick catch and throw, mostly accurate throws.

Mark Shallenberger 1B / LHP / St. Louis Priory, MO / 2019

Shallenberger is a 6-foot-2 195-pound left-handed hitting first baseman in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 7.25 60 and has an 88 mph exit velocity. At the plate, starts loaded in back side, no wasted movement pre-pitch, short in line stride, loose hands with feel for the barrel, gap to gap line drives, consistent hard contact, flashed pull power, body stays under control, repeats swing.  On the infield, 81 mph positional velocity, three quarters arm slot, fluid and athletic actions, stays under control, mostly accurate throws, quick catch and throw, soft hands.
