Ronald Sims
Mississippi Scouting Director

The Preseason Prospect ID took place on Sunday, January 28th at Smith-Wills Stadium, in Jackson, MS. The open event saw 75 players from across the state take part in a pro-style workout in front of the several coaches, professional scouts as well as the Prep Baseball Report Mississippi scouting staff.

Sunday’s event was littered with some of the top prospects from all around the state. In the days and weeks to come, there will be complete coverage from Sunday’s event. Today, our scouting staff kicks off its analysis by taking a look at the top statistical performers from the event.

+ Pearl River Community College signee, 2018 3B/OF Austen Izzio (Pearl River Central) continued to show off his intriguing tools. A lean, athletic frame Izzio showed quality athleticism posting a 6.78 60-yard dash, which translate well defensively as he works through the ball with fluid footwork. Also displaying quality arm strength recording a positional velocity of 86 mph. At the plate the right handed hitter was able to generate easy bat speed posting an 89 mph exit velocity as he blasted balls from gap-to-gap with backspin.

+ 2019 OF/RHP John Mitchell (South Jones) also had an impressive day, making his mark in the top of several categories at Sunday’s event. Mitchell began the day displaying a solid level of athleticism posting a 6.81 60-yard dash time and followed that up recording an 85 mph outfield velocity. Mitchell continued to show solid actions during batting practice making hard line-drive contact with solid bat speed posting the top exit velocity of the day at 93 mph.

+ 3B/OF Billy Garrity (Sumrall) spent the fall on the gridiron for the Bobcats and is still working his way back into full swing. Standing a stocky 6-foot, 195-pound with present strength in build, Garrity displayed quality bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 93 mph, taking a loud batting practice driving ball with authority to the pull side.

+ 2019 LHP Kole Alford (North Pike) had another impressive outing in his bullpen on Sunday. Throwing from a 3/4 slot with fluid rhythm in delivery and a quick arm stroke, Alford was able to sit 86-87 mph with his fastball that continued to show natural arm side run. The lefty also displayed an occasional tight spinning-breaking ball that showed 2/7-  shape at 73-74 mph.

+ 2019 RHP Mitch Murrell (Ocean Springs) has been a steady riser since the summer, and continued on that path Sunday. A physical 6-foot-3, 200-pound frame, the right-handed pitcher showed solid arm strength on the mound, sitting 86-87 mph with life and heaviness to his fastball. Murrell also displayed a firm 78 mph slider with lateral action and occasional tight spin.

+ 2019 Caleb Sterling (Warren Central) had a very solid overall day. The switch-hitting catcher stands 5-foot-11, 180-pounds with lean, athletic build with room for added strength. Sterling showed quality arm strength recording an event best pop time of 1.81 seconds, with a velocity from the crouch of 77 mph. Also jumping on the mound touching 86 mph with fastball.
