Deep South Invitational: 8 to Follow

Blake Davis
State Director

On Sunday, Sept. 29, the PBR Georgia team is headed to Auburn University to co-host the second annual Border Battle with our neighbors PBR Alabama. Some of the top prospects in the state's 2021, 2022, and 2023 classes will be on-hand to perform in front of the collegiate recruiting community through a pro-style workout followed by live game action.

Today, we're going to highlight eight of the latest need-to-follows from our state to set the scene for this high-profile event, beginning with East Coweta's Nico Senese below.

8 TO FOLLOW

Nico Senese SS / OF / East Coweta, GA / 2022

Excited about what we saw from this young 2022 infield prospect at the Deep South Invite, and think he has a good foundation to build upon. Sense has an excellent frame and athletic actions in the dirt. He is long and rangy with a very good pre-pitch routine that always starts in an athletic position. His first step is direct and low to the ground. He fields the ball clean and looks like he will progress into a sure handed infielder. His arm stroke is also clean and produces the kind of footwork that should lead to strong accurate throws. His set-up at the plate feels natural both in terms of rhythm and balance, his hands are high and his lower half stays underneath him. He showed the ability to use the big part of the field and was not over-matched by the older competition. Senese has a very interesting package of fluid actions on both sides of the ball, with a projectable, athletic frame.  Will be a close follow for Prep Baseball Report going forward and with natural progression and strength shows the kind of ingredients to progress into a good prospect to follow for clubs the next level.

Elijah Banks OF / Riverdale, GA / 2022

Banks made his first impression with our scouts at the LakePoint Classic. The 6-foot-2, 155-pound right-handed hitting outfielder showed off quick hands and a gap-to-gap approach at the plate. As he matures, coupled with his quick hands, we can expect to see an increased power output, adding another dimension to his game.

Rett Edwards RHP / Model, GA / 2021

Rett Edwards is a medium-framed right-hander with some moxie. He is an athletic kid with a repeatable compact delivery. Edwards has not started to climb from a velocity standpoint, but make no mistake there are strong ingredients to be a very productive pitcher at the next level. Edwards is aggressive to the zone with a clean arm stroke, that stays on line to the point hitters do not see the baseball until the last possible moment. He can really spin the ball with some finish too it. His combination of deception and breaking ball are going to allow Edwards to change eye levels with his fastball up in the zone. This kid has an idea of who he is on the mound and as you see his velocity climb, look for Edwards to be a tough one to handle.

Orlando Santiago-Martinez
C / 3B / Dalton, GA / 2022

5-foot-9, 165 pounds. Great swing at the plate. Smooth, quiet load and attacks the baseball. Quick hands that stay through the zone, and produces power. Good arm behind the plate, caught a couple guys stealing over the weekend. Has a lot of room for growth with his simple swing, and projects more power to come.

Orlando Santiago-Martinez (6/6/19)

Taylor Shultz SS / 2B / Allatoona, GA / 2022

The 5-foot-8, 160-pound Shultz had a strong showing here at the Future Games.  The undersized middle of the field prospect, did what he we saw him do all year on the defensive side of the ball. Shultz made several run saving plays and did it with more than his strong athleticism, he did it with his high baseball IQ also.  What may lack in size he more than makes up for with his range and hands. He is one of those guys that seems to always be in the right spot. Offensively Shultz has a singles approach and is still waiting on his man strength. In the future you can see Shutlz growing into some gap type power, but for now it is a solid contact approach that wins the day for him.  As a smaller guy Shultz has had to do the smaller things to win and his approach matches up well with both his 6-4-3 travel organization and his Allatoona High School baseball program. Somebody at the next level is going to get a winning player in Shultz and we look forward to seeing where he ends up.

Taylor Shultz (7/31/19)

Chase MeyerRHP / Cherokee, GA / 2023

Over the past few months, we have seen Meyer really come into his own physically, adding an inch or two to his frame along 15 pounds of mass, currently standing 6-foot, 160-pounds. Meyer creates a challenge for hitters with his live, loose arm coming out of a ¾ slot. Coupling his arm action and slot together, he is able to generate late life on his fastball, playing up to 83 back in April.  His off-speed, a sharp slider, has the makings of a devastating out-pitch.

Chase Meyer (4/28/19)

Garrett Garner OF / RHP / Franklin County, GA / 2023

Garner is a 6-foot-1, 160-pound right-handed-hitting outfielder with loose, athletic hands, complete with a line-drive offensive approach. He had a knack for finding the barrel in front of our staff at a recent tournament, too. Garner competes well at the plate and his bat really plays.

Tristan Nguyen LHP / Johnson, GA / 2022

This strong-framed left-handed pitcher shined in multiple events this summer.  Running his fastball up into the mid-80s and flashing a breaking ball with finish. Nguyen is set for a strong spring in 2020.
