Myers Park HS Scout Day: Pitcher Analysis

Brandon Hall & Matt Payne
North Carolina Director of Scouting & PBR Assoc Scout

In mid-October, as many players are hitting their fall peak and looking forward to some downtime as the winter season approaches, Myers Park High School hosted a PBR Scout Day.  The Scout Day featured 36 players from the 2019 – 2022 classes.  32 of the 36 players call Myers Park HS home.

Position players went through a full workout, including a laser timed 60 yard dash, an offensive evaluation in the cages and live on the field, as well as a defensive workout.  Pitchers were able to throw controlled bullpens where their velocities and stuff were evaluated.  As we begin to dive into the Scout Day, we will start with a look at the statistical information gathered from the day.  Running speeds, exit velocities, arm velocities, pop time and more were all recorded giving coaches and scouts their first glimpse at this talented group of players.

Ten pitchers from Myers Park HS took part in the scout day throwing their controlled bullpen for PBR Scouts.  As a group, there is advanced command and feel for the fastball-change-up combination.  The other attribute that stood out was the frames on several of the arms, suggesting their best is yet to come.

By The Numbers:
+ 36 players took part in the Scout Day
+ 14 pitchers threw controlled bullpens with Keener leading the way, bumping 88
+ 3 players ran sub 7.00 sixties on the laser timer with another 6 below 7.30.
+ 90 mph was the top exit velocity offensively with 2019 Evan Barbaryka and 2021 Jake Hasner each reaching the number.
+ 11 hitters flashed an exit velocity of 85 mph or better

Pitcher Analysis

Roe Chitwood RHP / RHP / Myers Park, NC / 2020

Physical, large framed 6-foot-2, 225 pound righty.  Broad shoulders with average quickness in the body.  Uses an average kick with stability over the rubber.   Level and on-line, lands square.  Long arm swing to an over-the-top slot with average hand speed.  Slight head clear at release to create room for the slotting.  Flooded the zone with all three pitches.  Fastball ranged 76-78.  Two-seam has arm side action.  Feel with good extension on the change-up at 71-73.  Fade is present, working with hand speed similar to that of fastball.  Attacks the bottom of the zone with the change.  Downer breaking ball with late tilt at 72-73.  Again in the zone, working with good hand speed.

Wilson Glasgow RHP / OF / Myers Park, NC / 2019

Uncommitted righty has length in his limbs and plenty of room to add strength to a 6-foot-1, 180 pound frame.  Still working through his throwing program, he was limited to 80-85% with his arm speed.  Fastball at 78-80 with arm side run.  Shows pitch-ability, dominating the zone to both sides with the fastball.  Angle out of the hand, to the down zone.  Advanced feel for his change-up at 71-73.  Has the ability to locate it with sink.  Deception exists with the hand speed.  Breaking ball has some depth with 11/5 tilt at 67-69.  Athletic delivery with a loose arm.  Length in the arm swing gets to a high-3/4 slot.  Works on-line and repeats.

Kellen Golden RHP / Myers Park, NC / 2019

Average frame with some projection left in a 5-foot-10, 185 pound frame.  Fastball ranged 74-77, flashing run with the delivery was on time.  Good feel for his offspeed.  Change-up at 70-73 with sink and run.  Throws it with good hand speed and stays in attack mode with the change.  Breaking ball at 67-70 tends to sweep with occasional late action.  Around the zone, but located change-up more than spin.  Some rhythm in the delivery.  Fights the arm action, bottoming out with the hand under the ball, working to a high-3/4 release.  Arm action can cause some timing issues creating a flatter angle on all pitches.  Level and on-line, lands with the foot strike slightly open.

Nate Harper RHP / Myers Park, NC / 2020

Average frame at 5-foot-10, 145 pounds.  Still maturing with room to add strength.  Simple delivery with an average kick.  Long arm swing and average hand speed work to a high-3/4 slot.  Lands square but across his line.  Level with good head stability.  Fastball has some arm side run, to the arm side, at 73-76.  Occasional sink with good feel for his change-up at 69-71.  Gradual 11/5 tilt to the breaking ball at 62-64.   Occasional depth to the spin pitch.  Attacked the zone with all three pitches and should be able to use a 3-pitch mix in game action.

Benjamin Heaton LHP / Myers Park, NC / 2019

High waisted, lanky, and thin.  Stands 6-foot-3, 165 pounds.  Easy to dream about the frame adding strength in the near future.  Attacks the zone with a 3-pitch mix.  Showed an ability to locate the fastball in the down zone to both sides.  Fastball sat 72-75. Change-up has sink and deception out of the hand, ranging 68-69.  The breaking ball is still maturing.  Inconsistent tilt ranging from a downer 12/6 to a soft sweeping 2/8 tilt.  Misses tended to be toward the arm side.  Breaking ball ranged 61-65.  Good stability over the rubber, working level with good direction.  Long arm swing with regular effort and average hand speed to a high-3/4 slot.  Shows an ability to repeat the delivery.

Matthew Hunter RHP / Myers park , NC / 2019

Average frame at 6-foot-1, 190 pounds.  Fluid delivery, working on-line and creating extension.  Long arm swing to a high-3/4 slot and average hand speed.  Level and stable over the rubber.  Fastball runs and sinks, sitting 80-82.  Change-up is ahead of the breaking ball at 77-78.  Change has action to the arm side.  Floods the zone with the fastball-change combo.  Breaking ball has gradual 11/5 action at 63-66.  Tends to limit his extension through the breaking ball, spinning off early.  When he works through it, there is some depth to the pitch.

Henry Minges LHP / Myers Park, NC / 2020

Average frame with some length at 6-foot-1, 150 pounds.  Limited to 80-85% in this pen as he continues his throwing program.  Arm shows some quickness working through a scapular load to get to a ¾ slot.  Medium arm swing has looseness.  There is some effort fighting for a consistent release.  Level through the delivery, the rhythm is choppy creating some timing issues in the release.  Fastball ranged 72-74, occasionally cutting to the glove side.  Breaking ball is erratic but sharp at times at 60-61.  The more he threw the more they landed.  Tilt ranged from 1/7 to 2/8 and occasionally sweeping through the zone.  Change-up is still developing at 65-70, but it does work with similar hand speed to the fastball.

Cameron Wade RHP / Myers Park, NC / 2020

5-foot-11, 140 pounder.  Fastball at 74-75 with run and sink on the 2-seamer.  Sink exists on the change-up as well.  Change sat 68-71 with deceptive hand speed.  Gradual 11/5 tilt, occasionally sweeping through the zone at 61-64.  Flooded the zone with all three pitches, showing good feel for the fastball and change-up.  Average kick with good rhythm in the delivery.  Works level and on-line with good posture and stability through the head.  Average extension.  Repeats the delivery with ease.  Long arm swing can get extended working to a high-3/4 release.

Crawford Wade LHP / Myers Park, NC / 2020

Athletic build with length in the limbs, standing 6-foot-4, 160 pounds.  Quick arm and frame suggest plenty of room still left to his ceiling.  As he loosened the arm touched 86 on shuffle throws from the mound.  Fastball ranged 80-83, heavy when down in the zone.  Change-up is erratic at times but he has confidence in the pitch with fade and extension, sitting 73-76.  Nearly matches the hand speed on fastball.  Breaking ball is erratic as he fights for hand position and a consistent release.  Slight hump out of the hand with a gradual 1/7 action at 61-63.  50/50 landing it and may need to go to a more natural hand slot to spin the ball.  Some effort in the delivery, working to find rhythm at times.  Level, works on-line, landing square, and falling toward the 3B side.  Long arm swing and a quick hand through an over-the-top slot.

Jaren Woodcock RHP / RHP / Myers Park, NC / 2020

Average 6-foot-1, 165 pounder.   Worked at 80-85% through the bullpen as he continues his throwing plan.  Level with some rhythm through the delivery.  Lands on-line with the toe slightly open at foot strike.  Medium arm stroke is loose to a high-3/4 release.  Regular effort.  Flooded the zone with all three pitches.  Fastball has run at 73-75.  Breaking ball works with gradual 12/6 tilt, ranging 66-68.  Backing up at times, the curveball has good hand speed and direction.  The change flashes fade at 67-68 and there is feel for the pitch.
