NC Commitment Tracker: Mortenson to WCU; Several 21s and 22s Make Decisions

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

The North Carolina Commitment Tracker will be a weekly blog to track players and programs through the recruiting process.  Each week we will look players that have pledged their commitment with back ground on select players and their process.  We will also look total commitment numbers across the state and profile select schools as they work to complete their 2019 class.

Mid-November brings the National Signing date and players across the state are finalizing their commitment to the school of their choice.  Several players took the week to pledge their commitment with another 16 players in-state announcing their decision.  Of the 16 commitments, 10 were from the 2019 class, 1 from the 2020 class, 3 from the 2021 class and 2 from the 2022 class.

Western Carolina and head coach Bobby Moranda secured one of the top defensive players in the state with Gavin Mortenson (SS, Northwest Guilford HS, 2020).  Mortenson was a member of Team Carolina at the PBR Future Games where his defensive ability impressed.  Since August, Mortenson has added strength to his frame and his swing is beginning to drive the baseball into the gaps.  A lanky, athletic frame, he will continue to add strength and may be quite a catch for the Catamounts for years to come.

East Carolina had a good week landing four commitments, two each from the 2021 and 2022 classes.  Ryan McCrystal (C/RHP, Fuquay-Varina HS, 2021) is an interesting prospect who performed at a high level in front of the Pirate coaching staff at the PBR Underclass Games in August.
