PBR Scout Day: Myers Park - Quick Hitters

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

Saturday October 13 saw close to 40 high school players, most of them from Myers Park HS workout in a scout day format for Prep Baseball Report.  With the help of the Myers Park staff, players in attendance were able to receive a full pro-style workout with PBR gathering stats and information for an evaluation.  Each player will have a video packaged on their PBR Profile in the coming week.

This event launches some new interface with college coaches and pro scouts with the post event information.  Gone are the days of the statistics being loaded into a pdf.  Now players will see their stats added to the event page with a quick link to the player’s profile page.  PBR will be working to upload past information to events from this summer as well, allowing leader boards and event history to begin to populate as coaches and scouts are working to gather back ground on the players attending PBR events.  This interface will be interactive with PBR events, tournaments, and any time PBR staff is out working to gather information and continue to be the No. 1 source for scouting information across North Carolina, the southeast, and the country.

The event on Saturday was split into two different registrations allowing players from the Myers Park Scout Day to keep their information separate from players attending the open scout day.  Below are some quick notes from the director’s chair as we begin to digest the full day’s action.

Quick Hitters

During any given scout day I work to cover a number of areas from operations, scouting, hitting fungos, and even at times running a camera.  While working to oversee the entire process, I am scratching away notes from the event and players that stand out for one reason or another.

After the event, as we are uploading the video to send to be professionally cut and added to the player profile pages, I work to dive in to each player’s stats and get a first look at their video, again scratching away notes the whole time.

Below are some of the things that have caught my eye as we work to dive into all of the information.  In the coming week we will break down the statistics from the entire day, as well as work to post notes and an evaluation on each player in attendance.

+ There are a number of reasons to pop in on East Surry HS this spring and hard throwing 2020 RHP Seth Keener is one of them.  Strong loose arm action has the ball exploding out of his hand at 88.  Add Keener to ECU commit AJ Wilson, and that tandem may win a lot of games this spring.

+  2020 Infielder Colton Stotler looks to be healthy.  The switch-hitter has battled some growing pains in the last year, but was completely healthy and looked the part of an upper-tier recruit during the day.  Running a 7.21 and flashing good exit velocity from the right, 88 mph, and left side, 87 mph, the spring is coming back to a body that has been limited for one small reason or another.  PBR has seen a 7.00 sixty out of Stotler, and if he can continue to match up his tools with his play-ability he will be fun to watch for years to come.

+  The Myers Park pitching staff is deep with arms that dominate the zone and can throw a change-up.  With myself and Matt Payne running different bullpen sessions, we both made a note of the staff’s ability to attack with Fastball/Change.  Uncommitted 2019 Wilson Glasgow is still working into form and was controlling his effort level.  Watch for his velocity to jump quickly when he is able to let it go, as he completes his build-up program.  The tall righty won a lot of games with pitch-ability and competitiveness in 2018.

+ 2020 LHP Crawford Wade caught the attention of those around his bullpen as he worked to get loose.  The arm is extremely quick and was up to 86 on his shuffle throws from the mound.  In the bullpen he topped at 83, but it is very easy to dream that more may be on the way.

+ Several uncommitted 2019s put up intriguing numbers and should draw the attention of recruiting coordinators as they work to finalize their 2019 classes.  James Goodwin (SS, Home Schooled) has an athletic frame and ran a 7.16 sixty.  Across the infield he was 84 mph with carry, and in the box, the right handed hitter had an exit velocity peak at 87 mph.  Jack Masonis (OF, Myers Park HS) ran a 6.86 sixty on the laser timer and followed it up with carry from the outfield at 86 mph out of the hand.  In the box, the right handed hitter flashed power in BP, with average barrel awareness and an exit velocity of 86 mph.  Right handed hitting outfielders are typically attractive later in the recruiting process, but someone may get an instant contributor with Masonis.

+ One hitter to keep an eye on as he continues to mature is Logan Hall (OF, Myers Park HS, 2021).  Hall made consistent contact with the barrel stroking the ball from gap to gap.  Easy rhythm with good hands and a direct path, Hall may hit at a high level as he continues to add strength.

+  The infielders in attendance received a treat as former MLB shortstop Tony Womack was on hand to assist with the day and handled the infield portion of the day.  All of the infielders were able to take close to 15 minutes of ground balls with Womack keeping an eye on them.

By The Numbers:

+ 37 players took part in the Scout Day
+ 14 pitchers threw controlled bullpens with Keener leading the way, bumping 88
+ 3 players ran sub 7.00 sixties on the laser timer with another 6 below 7.30.
+ 90 mph was the top exit velocity offensively with 2019 Evan Barbaryka and 2021 Jake Hasner each reaching the number.
+ 11 hitters flashed an exit velocity of 85 mph or better
