Pre-Summer Trials Pitcher Analysis: Part I

In late May, PBR VA/DC hosted the Pre-Summer Trials at Virginia Sports Complex, featuring over 60 players from all corners of our coverage area. Over the next week, we will post the scouting reports on that event as we add them to each player's profile. Here is the first chunk of pitchers, in alphabetical order:

Ryan Aruanno, RHP/OF, Massaponax, 2018
Aruanno stands a skinny 5-10. Throws from an over the top slot with a long arm action. Shoulders are level and he strides out on line to a square landing with an athletic finish. Fastball was thrown for strikes, running 69-71. Curveball had early 11/5 break with decent armspeed at 56-57. Good armspeed on fading change-up that ran 60-61. Good command of both offspeed pitches. Showed a cutter at 68 with some 10/4 bite to it.

Brian Baucom, RHP, Midlothian, 2018
Baucom is 6-0 tall with an athletic frame. Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action and some effort. Drop and drive delivery with uphill shoulders and a slightly open landing with a fall off finish. Fastball had downward plane, sitting 75-77, touching 78. Gradual 11/5 curveball with decent armspeed that has potential as it tightens, ran 61-63. Change-up with arm side run and decent armspeed ran 67-71.

Bryan Brooks, RHP/1B, New Kent, 2017
Brooks stands 6-1 and has an athletic frame. Throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a drop and drive delivery. Long, loose arm that is quick and generates velocity with normal effort. Shoulders level and online, strides on line to a square landing with athletic finish. Fastball had slight run, thrown for strikes at 76-78. 11/5 curveball with gradual break running 64-66. Fading change-up with good armspeed thrown for strikes running 67-68.

Chris Brubaker, RHP/OF, Fairfax, 2017
Brubaker stands an athletic 6-1. He throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short, loose arm action and some effort. Shoulders are downhill and closed as he strides to a closed landing with an athletic finish. Fastball had slight cut, sitting 76-78. 10/4 downer slider with decent armspeed, running 66-70. Fading change-up with decent armspeed that ran 71-74.

Matt Brubaker, RHP/OF, Fairfax, 2017
Brubaker stands 6-1 and has an athletic frame. Throws from an over the top slot with a long arm action and a smooth tall and fall delivery. Normal effort, shoulders level and strides on line to a square landing with a slight fall off. Fastball had slight movement, running 76-77. 11/5 curveball with gradual break at 63, thrown for strikes with decent armspeed. Sinking change-up with decent armspeed at 69.

Patrick Burke, RHP/OF, Loudoun County, 2017
Burke is 6-0 tall and has a lankier athletic frame. Throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a long, quick arm action that generates velocity with normal effort. Shoulders are uphill and closed and he has a square landing with an athletic finish. Fastball had good angle and sat 79-82, touching 83. Slowed arm a bit on 10/4 slider that was 62-63. Decent armspeed on fading change-up that was 70-73.

Luke Burner, OF/LHP, Highland School, 2019
Burner has an athletic 5-9 frame. Throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a drop and drive delivery. Long arm action that generates velocity with some effort. Shoulders are level and closed as he strides on line to a square landing with an athletic finish. Fastball had heavy run, sitting 72-74. Sweeping slider with gradual break that he slows his arm down a bit, 64-67. Sinking change-up that was 65 that he slowed his arm a bit on.

Colton Cliborne, RHP/OF, Dinwiddie, 2018
Cliborne is 6-1 with a lankier frame that is projectable. Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a drop and drive delivery. Long, loose arm action generates velocity with some effort. Shoulders are uphill and closed, strides out to a square landing with an athletic finish. Fastball was 77-79, touching 80. 12/6 curveball with gradual break and decent armspeed, 57-58. Fading change-up was 65-70.

Chris Day, RHP, Manteo (NC), 2017
Day is 6-2 and has an athletic frame. Throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a drop and drive delivery. Short, loose arm action that is quick and generates velocity with some effort. Shoulders are level and closed, strides out on line to a square landing with an athletic finish. Fastball has run to it, sat 78-80, touched 81. 10/4 slider with sharp break and decent armspeed at 65-68. Change-up had good armspeed and run, sitting 72-74.

Austin Estridge, RHP, Battlefield, 2018
Estridge stands a lanky 6-5. Throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a drop and drive delivery. Long, loose arm action that generates velocity with normal effort. Shoulders uphill and closed as he strides on line to a square, athletic finish. Fastball was 78-81 with slight run to it. 10/4 slider with decent armspeed that he threw for strikes at 61-63. Change-up had some fade and good armspeed, thrown for strikes at 71.

Ryan Fitzgerald, RHP, Riverheads, 2017
Fitzgerald stands 5-11 with a lanky frame. Throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a tall and fall delivery and a long, loose arm action that generates velocity with normal effort. Shoulders were downhill and strode out on line to a square landing with an athletic finish. Fastball had slight run, sitting 80-81. Gradual 10/4 slider with good arm speed that he threw for strikes at 68-69. Good armspeed on a sinking change-up that moved well down in the zone at 68.
