Southern Nevada Open: Quick Hits

Brett Harrison
Nevada Scouting Director

The Southern Nevada Open Scout Day in the books, we now take a look back at the standouts from yesterday's event. The Scout Day included a Pro-Style Workout where players ran a Laser Timed 60 Yard Dash, took a Batting Practice, Catcher Pop Times/Velocity, Outfield Evaluations/Velocity and Infield Evaluation/Velocity concluding with Pitches Bullpens. This was an open event for 2021-2024 players in Southern Nevada whose programs were not able to host their own Scout Day.

Logan Cockrill / C / 2022

The Centennial catcher came into then event as the Top Ranked Uncommitted Catcher in the 2022 class and after his performance on Saturday, he could be one of the next prospect in the Junior class off the board. His obvious strength with some twitch throughout his 5-foot-10, 200 pound barrel chested frame is present on both sides of the ball. He got his day started off with a 7.15 Laser Timed 60, then earned a 92 mph Raw Exit Velocity which carried over to his loud batting practice round where he lived in the big part of the yard with some present power the pull side and while staying in his legs well throughout the round. The best part of his game is behind the dish where he used his strength and flexibility to receive with ease and compliments it with his catch and throw tool that helped him earn an event best 1.88 Pop Time. This is a guy who we expect to have his breakout season this Spring for a Centennial team that could make some noise late in the season.

Rylan Evans / MIF / 2022

Possibly the best kept secret in Nevada's 2022 class, Evans comes out of small school in Moapa Valley, but in the events he has attended with Prep Baseball Report, his game is anything but small. The first thing that you notice about Evans is his athleticism. The speed is trending in the right direction and his lateral range will parallel that progress, but his current footwork and flow through the ball will translate well to the next level. He produced one of the, if not the, top rounds of the day with his ability to consistently find the barrel with a high hanging leg kick that gets down on time. His present power was on display with the balls being driven with authority to both gaps. After a successful summer and Top Prospect Games, Evans shot up the last rankings update and he will be a guy who should continue to make his way up the rankings in the update coming this April.

Easton Shelton / 3B / 2023

The 6-foot-4, 220 pound sophomore is just now scratching the surface of what is to come in the next few year, especially at the plate. The physical prospect posted the day's Top Raw Exit Velocity at 94 mph and translated it directly his batting practice round with fluid, simple stroke that showed easy gap to gap power while also showcasing his ability to spray the ball from foul line to foul line. His ability at the plate is the easily the best part of his game with his developing skill in the infield trending in the right direction, especially for someone his size and we project him to have the defensive side of his game to continue progress and eventually catch up to his ability on the offensive side of the ball. Currently, Shelton holds down the third base position, but his size could have him make the move over to first base, especially with his power bat.

Ty Silva / OF / 2023

In a conversation with Silva after his last Prep Baseball Report event, we discussed his speed being something he could improve on to take his game to the next level and he did just that at the Southern Nevada Open Scout Day. His Laser Timed 60 improved from a 7.13 in October 2020 to a 6.84 on Saturday and it had a lot to do with the additional 15 pounds he has added over the past few months and that improves strength resonated both at the plate and in the field as well. Offensively, his bat speed was visibly noticeable as he carried his 93 mph Raw Exit Velocity into his batting practice round where his power potential is starting to show flashes of becoming present power, especially to the pull side. His improvements didn't stop the 60 and Exit Velocity, his Outfield Velocity also improved by +4 mph to 85 mph and we project more to come.

Spencer Hatch / LHP / 2023

The #9 ranked prospect in the 2023 class came out to the Southern Nevada Open Scout Day fresh off of his sophomore basketball season. His fastball lived in the low 80's at Saturday's event with much more in the tank as he was up to 84 mph this past summer at the Nevada Top Prospect Games. Though the velocity was not his usual mid 80's, his ability to locate was present as he spotted up his three pitch mix in the zone with a repeated, low effort delivery with a clean, high 3/4 arm slot. He fastball and changeup both have some arm side life with his change up also flashes some downward action as well and his breaking ball with 1/4 shape. This is a young prospect who is a key part of the exciting 2023 class at Faith Lutheran and play a major role on the Crusaders pitching staff in the 12 game sprint of a season.

Austin Cates / RHP/1B / 2021

The Coronado product has had an exciting couple of months all culminating with his signing with Hawaii Hilo as a projectable right hander and his projection is already starting to come to fruition. After dedicating his Spring "down time" to the weight room, his ability on the mound has excelled with his fastball cruising speed at 85-86 mph and was up to 89 mph last week in his most recent outing for the Golden Spikes. To compliment his two and four seam fastballs, he has shown confidence in head of his three secondary pitches that includes a heavy split change at 75-77 mph, a tight, late action slider at 73-78 mph and a 11/5 curveball that he regularly goes to as he strike out pitch at 71-72 mph. Though Cates is signed primarily as a pitcher, do not sleep on him in the box as he currently lives in the heart of his teams batting order with a clean, left handed stroke that has seen the power start to shine through to the pull side. This is going to be a player to keep an eye on with the 2021 PBR Player Rankings Update coming out soon.
