Our team of Ground Force Scouts are out and about across the Empire State this spring. Each week we will release a comprehensive list of players that have caught our eye during our travels.

WEEK 7 (MAY 13- MAY 19, 2019)

Patrick McGuire OF / LHP / Shenendehowa, NY / 2020

6-foot-0, 150 pound OF/LHP.  Has started to earn more consistent playing time for the Plainsmen varsity team and he has produced some big games.  He was 1 for 3 with 2 BB’s versus Niskayuna in a victory and 3 for 4 against Queensbury. Also a LHP who throws mid to upper 70’s with an 11/5 CB.  Look forward to seeing him compete at the NYS Games in June.

Caleb Walker SS / Deposit , NY / 2021

Proportionally built MIF with a relaxed, loose approach in the box. Short swing from a slightly open setup. Has flashed some pop this spring but also stayed on a ball middle out for a line drive 1B to left-center. Defensively the glove plays; will need to be more consistent with throwing/shuffle step relationship to stay on the left side of the infield.

James Grausgruber RHP / 3B / Harpursville, NY / 2019

Sturdy 6-foot frame; played SS today and show suitable arm strength from the left side. At the plate he uses an upright, even setup with solid contact in his at-bats. Finished out the game on the mound at 80-82 MPH with a sweeping mid 60's CB with depth.

Bryce Reimer LHP / 1B / Sullivan West , NY / 2020

Second look at Reimer yielded more of the same results sitting 83-84 MPH, touching 85 MPH a few times. Works ahead of hitters and the CB continued to show sharp, late action at 63-64 MPH as he racked up a host of punchouts.

Justin Guiliano LHP / OF / Ellenville, NY / 2020

Ultra-athletic Southpaw who also plays CF along with basketball and soccer. Checks in around 6-foot-4 200 pounds. Sat 82-83 MPH, touching 84 MPH with a ton of strikes. Flooded the zone both with his FB and big CB. Also mixed in a knuckleball as his change of pace.

2021 2B Caden Fortunato (Deposit-Hancock)
Solid build for the LHH; even setup with a quiet demeanor in the box. Clean with the glove and transfer. Swing path sweeps through the zone with some lift to his pull side. Came in relief and was 77-78 with a short slider in the upper 60's. Definite player to keep an eye on moving forward.

2020 RHP Carlos Hidalgo (St. Dominic's)
This St. John’s committ started this game on the mound. Flashed 80-85 with his FB, and paired it with a 73-76 mph 11-5 CB. Slow, and well timed up delivery. Lands closed off which effects his control in/out. Excellent hip rotation, and gets good leverage and extension out of his. Once he gets better direction with his drive, he should be a two way option in college. Which leads to him at the plate. Hidalgo had a 95 mph exit velocity on a ground ball up the middle. Very easy power, with more to come. Athletic, and looks like the game slows down for him.

2020 RHP Johnny Flannigan (St. Dominic’s)
Athletic build coming in at 5-10, 185-pounds. Flannigan came out of relief today and his FB was playing up. Sitting 83-86 with a tight put away 69-71 mph CB. Quick and in sync delivery with a great use of dropping and driving on his back leg. Pushes off with explosion which leads to a plus-plus extension.

2020 RHP Louis Stallone (St. Anthony’s / Arkansas commit)
Big, tall, and controls his long limbs like a true athlete. Using his 6-8, 210-pound frame, he generates great downward action on his Fastball. Plenty of heaviness to his 82-85 MPH FB. His extended reach and downhill angle made it appear harder. Ground ball machine, only striking out 2 guys, but creating a lot of soft contact living down in the zone. Predominantly used his FB all game, didn’t have a great feel of his 11-5 CB today.

2021 RHP Jason Rodriguez (Queensbury HS)
6-foot-1, athletic looking pitcher.  Kept the Plainsmen off balance in two innings of work.  Only a sophomore, with plenty of upside for growth in the future on last year’s NYS Class A Championship team.

2019 SS Brendan Scott (Queensbury HS/SUNY Brockport Commit)
5-foot-11, with a strong, athletic build.  Had two singles and stole a base in the game versus Shenendehowa.  Good lateral quickness with soft hands and a strong arm. Solid player for the defending Class A champions who is committed to SUNY Brockport.

2019 OF Aaron Whitley (Niskayuna HS/ University of Rochester Football Commit)
A talented two sport athlete, Aaron is the cog that helps the Niskayuna offense churn.  He is a force in the middle of the line-up and wreaks havoc on the base paths with his speed.  Younger brother of 2015 MLB first round draft pick Garrett Whitley (Tampa Bay), lead off and went 2 for 4 in the game.

2021 OF Cal Vander Veer (Shenendehowa HS)
5-foot-9, sparkplug type player with a compact, powerful frame.  Consistently led the Plainsmen JV team with over a .400 batting average before earning a call up to the varsity prior to sectionals.
