OK Fall Underclass Prospect Games: First Baseman Analysis

PBR OK hosted the fourth annual OK Fall Underclass Prospect Games at beautiful Oral Roberts University. Nearly 75 invite-only players showcased their skill in front of the PBR OK staff and ORU staff. The talented event saw five sub 7.00 60s, 6 90+ exit velos, 6 infield velos of 80+, 5 outfield velos of 85+, 5 sub 2.00 second pop times, and 5 max fastballs at 85 mph. Today, we take an in-depth look at the six first basemen from the event, below.

Garret Baker 1B / RHP / Mustang, OK / 2021

 A 6-foot-5, 235-pound sturdy frame; 1B/RHP. During batting practice, the right-handed hitters best exit velocity was 85 mph, but showed much more pop than that in BP, leaving the yard twice with a middle to pull side approach, mostly barrels. Began in an open stance with a smooth load, then used a short stride to start his swing. Displays a flat swing plane, quick bat speed and good extension on his finish. While in the infield, registered his best throw across the diamond at 71 mph; had firm hands and developing feet. Had a long arm action and a high ¾ slot. In the 60-yard dash, his time was 8.57.

Dagan Bellar RHP / 1B / Norman North, OK / 2022

A 6-foot-1, 205-pound; RHP/1B. At the plate, the right-handed hitter's best exit velocity was 82 mph. Begins in a tall stance with a wrapping load, then uses a short stride right before his swing. Shows an upward swing plane and has good extension on his finish. In BP, showed a pull side approach with occasional lift and some pop. In the infield, his best throw was registered at 67 mph; has developing feet and raw hands. Used a stiff arm action and a ¾ slot while showing consistent accuracy to the bag. During the event, he ran the 60-yard dash in 8.15. 

Gage Gilchrist 1B / RHP / Oklahoma Christian , OK / 2022

A 6-foot-2, 210-pound sturdy frame; 1B/RHP. At the plate, the left-handed hitter showed his power ability with an exit velocity of 90 mph. Starts in a balanced stance with a wrapping load, then uses a leg kick to initiate his swing. Has above average bat speed, as well as an upward swing plane and good extension on his finish. In BP, shows a consistent pull approach with lift and some big pop.  In the infield, recorded a position velocity of 72 mph; had heavy footwork, a fluid exchange and firm hands. Showing consistent accuracy to the bag, he had a high ¾ slot with a long arm action. During the event, he recorded a 60 time of 7.82. 

Joshua Noah 1B / RHP / Red Oak, OK / 2021

A 6-foot, 172-pound proportional frame; 1B/RHP. At the plate, the right-handed hitter clocked an exit velocity of 88 mph. Starts in an open stance with a smooth load, then uses a short stride just before his swing. Bat speed was average, showed a flat swing plane and a high finish. In BP, shows a middle to pull approach, mostly flat, and mostly barrels. In the infield, his best throw was registered at 74 mph; had a quick exchange, consistent hands and developing feet. Using a loose arm action, he showed consistent accuracy to the bag from a high ¾ slot. In the 60-yard dash, his time was 7.27.

Trevin Pettigrew 1B / LHP / Yukon, OK / 2023

 A 5-foot-11, 210-pound durable  frame; 1B/LHP. At the plate, the left-handed hitter showed his power in the box with a strong exit velocity of 89 mph. Starts in a balanced stance, has a smooth load and uses a short stride right before his swing. Has a level swing plane, as well as explosive bat speed and good extension on his finish. In BP, shows an all fields and mostly flat approach finding mostly barrels. In the infield, recorded a position velocity of 69 mph; had a quick exchange, quick feet and sure hands. Showing consistent accuracy to the bases, he had a ¾ slot with a loose arm action. In the 60-yard dash, his time was 8.44.

Jackson Smith 1B / OF / Owasso, OK / 2022

A 5-foot-9, 162-pound; 1B/OF. At the plate, the left-handed hitter's best exit velocity was 81 mph. Began in an open a tall  stance with a big load, then used a long stride just before his swing. Exhibited an upward swing plane, quick bat speed and a high finish. In BP, shows a middle to opposite field approach with lift, occasionally pulling balls on the ground, mostly barrels. In the infield, showed his ability to throw 67 mph across the diamond; displayed a quick exchange, rhythmic feet and sure hands. Using a long arm action, he showed consistent accuracy to the bag from a ¾ slot. During the event, he recorded a 60 time of 7.83.
