OK Underclass Prospect Games: Outfielder Analysis

On October 29th, Prep Baseball Report Oklahoma held it inaugural event, the OK Underclass Prospect Games, in Edmond Oklahoma. Nearly 70 players from around the state from the 2018, 2019, and 2020 classes attended the event.

Player profiles have been updated with profile pictures, stats, and videos. Today, we will take an in-depth look at the outfielders. A group that displayed some advanced speed and pop. Though many of the outfielders on this list are two-way players, they will be covered here as corner defenders.  Click on the player’s name to see their full profile.

Angel Ackerman, OF, Choctaw HS (2020)
A 5-foot-8, 155-pound athletic build with room to grow. Offensively, right-handed hitter, flat middle, pull  on the ground approach. Wide, athletic, slightly back leg heavy set-up, short, open stride, pulls a flat bat through the zone,  stays inside the baseball, 77 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.08 60. Aggressive base runner, stole second and third. Defensively, takes good routes, charges the ball on the ground well, throws from a low slot, 73 mph from the outfield. In-game, Ackerman went 2/3 with two singles and a strike out.

Cash Balentine, OF, Wister HS (2018)
A 5-foot-8, 150-pound proportional frame. Offensively, left-handed hitter, flat oppo, pull on the ground approach. Relaxed, balanced, upright stance, rocking load with leg kick, short to the ball, flat path through contact, 82 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.32 60, 4.53 in-game home-to-first. Defensively, very confident outfielder, good angles to the ball, accurate arm with some carry, 80 mph arm. Balentine went 1/3 with a single up the middle, three walks, and two strikeouts.

Mason Carrier, OF, Edmond North HS (2018)      
A 6-foot, 190 pound strong, durable build. Offensively, left-handed hitter, opposite field, line drive approach, very good round of BP, shows some pop. Open, upright stance, big knee-knock leg kick, flat path through contact, creates backspin, aggressive swing, 83 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.28 60, 4.66 home-to-first in-game, to heads-up stolen bases. Defensively, clean actions, charges the ball well, over the top arm slot, some carry, 82 mph from the outfield. In-game, went 1/3 with a base hit through the right side, two ground-outs and a walk.

Devon Chapa, OF, Madill HS (2018)
A 6-foot, 150-pound lean frame with room to add strength. Offensively, right-handed hitter, most flat approach in the middle of the field. Relaxed, upright, open stance, slight leg kick, moderate stride, flat path to contact, high finish, 79 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.24 60. Defensively, methodical actions, clean, high-3/4 slot, 82 mph from the outfield. Chapa went 0/3 with a line out to first base, a walk, and a strike out.

Dalton DeBaud, OF,Yukon HS (2018)
A 6-foot-1, 185-pound lean frame with strength. Offensively, right-handed hitter, pull approach, pull side pop, found barrel consistently. Wide, upright, set-up, moderate stride, drops hands right before launch, uphill path, creates consistent backspin, 89 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.12 60. Defensively, quick and aggressive actions, short, over the top arm action, quick release, 77 mph. In-game, DeBaud went 0/2 with a walk and a strikeout. 

Parker Ellis, OF, Moore HS (2019)
A 5-foot-11, 150 pound frame. Offensively, left-handed hitter, middle pull, mostly flat approach. Upright, slightly back leg heavy set-up, short stride, late heal plant, slightly uphill path, high finish, 80 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.70 60. Defensively, high energy, some stiffness, 63 mph from the outfield. On the day, Ellis went 0/3 with two strikeouts and a walk.

Cole Embrey, OF, Mustang HS (2018)
A 5-foot-11, 150-pound wiry frame with room to add strength. Offensively, left-handed hitter, opposite field, line drive approach, consistently barreled the ball in BP. Upright, relaxed, narrow stance with some rhythm, moderate leg kick, short to the ball, handsy swing, high finish, 80 mph exit velo. Runs a 6.97 60, 4.53 in-game home-to-first. Defensively, confident actions, charges the ball well, high-3/4 slot, 74 mph.  Embrey went 0/3 with a line out to the shortstop and two walks. One of only a few hitters to not strike out on the day. 

Donovan Gaines, OF, Southmoore HS (2019)
A 5-foot-11, 190-pound muscular, athletic frame. Offensively, left-handed hitter, all fields, flat approach, some bat speed. Unright, open, balanced stance, coil load, quick hands, rotational finish, 85 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.06 60 and gets out of the box well. Defensively, athletic, aggressive actions, over the top slot, 73 mph from the outfield. In-game Gaines reached base tree times on two walks and an error by the first baseman, also had two strikeouts.

Bryce Greene, OF, Choctaw HS (2020)
A 6-foot-1, 145-pound frame with room to add size and strength. Offensively, left-handed hitter, flat, pull approach. Hits from a slightly open athletic base, slight leg kick, arm bar load, flat path through contact, 71 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.47 60. Defensively, aggressive actions, a bit stiff, high-3/4 arm slot, 69 mph from the outfield. In-game, Greene was 0/3 with two strikeouts.

Josh King, OF, Jenks HS (2018)
A 5-foot-11, 163-pound lean build. Offensively, right-handed hitter, pull gap, line drive approach, some pop. Athletic, slightly open stance, moderate stride, short to the ball, flat path to contact, rotational, high finish, 80 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.34 60. Defensively, quick, confident, athletic actions, over the top throwing action, 73 mph from the outfield, some of the best actions in the outfield at the event. In-game, King went 0/2 with a walk and two strikeouts.

Kaden Marshall, OF, Deer Creek HS (2019)
A 6-foot-3, 205-pound muscular, athletic build. Offensively, right-handed hitter, middle-pull, flat approach, flashes big pop from bat speed and hand strength. Athletic, wide set-up with rhythm, rocking load, slight leg lift, flat path through finish, 95 mph exit velo. Shows the ability to cover the whole dish, hitting the ball hard in all locations. Runs a 7.03 60. Defensively, aggressive actions, good hands, high-3/4 slot with some stiffness, 82 mph arm with some carry. Marshall went 0/3 in the game, flying out to the track in left and striking out.        

Brandon Rutledge, OF,  McAlester HS (2018)
A 5-foot-8, 150-pound quick twitch athletic build. Offensively, right-handed hitter, middle-oppo, ground ball and flat approach. Balanced, athletic set-up, slight knee-knock load, pulls a flat bat through the zone with quick hands, pulls of early at times, 87 mph exit velo. Runs a smooth 6.66 60, getting up to speed quickly, ran a 4.23 home-to first in the game. Defensively, smooth, confident actions, good hands, short, quick high-3/4 slot, some accuracy, 81 mph from the outfield.  In-game, Rutledge put consistent pressure on the left side of the infield with his speed, reaching base twice on rushed errors, punched a clean hit through the 6-hole, and drew a walk, one of the few hitters to not strike out on the day.

Gabriel Williams, OF, Washington HS (2020)
A 6-foot-2, 174-pound athletic build with long levers, projectable.  Offensively, right-handed hitter, pull-gap, line drive approach, shows some bat and uses his levers well. Slightly narrow, closed stance, reverse toe-tap load, strides closed, quality back side drive, quick, easy hands, 86 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.68 60. Defensively, average actions, high-3/4, loose arm slot that will get better as Williams adds strength to his frame, 74 mph. In-game,  struck out and grounded out to the pitcher.
