The summer rush of PBR events in Pennsylvania continued last week with the 2017 Western PA Top Prospect Games on July 18 and 19. 55 prospects from across the state gathered for two days of nine inning games and showcase activities at the Iron Horse Sports Complex in Windber, PA. Today we continue our analysis of the prospects in attendance by taking a look at those that participated as pitcher onlys as a member of the Navy Team.
Navy Team (Pitcher Onlys)
Nate Beimel, 2019, LHP/1B/OF, St. Marys Area HS
6-foot-2, 185-pound left-hander continues to show steady progress with incremental velocity gains on all his pitches. Working with a slight leg strain he sat 82-84 from a high 3/4 slot with the ability to spot the fastball to both sides of the plate. Curveball showed increased depth and tighter rotation at 67 mph than the last we saw it. Also commanded his 73 mph changeup well showing arm run to right-handed hitters and turning it over to lefties. Worked two solid innings allowing two hits while striking out two batters. At full health this summer Beimel was reportedly up to 87 mph.
Hunter Boyan, 2019, RHP, Shaler Area HS
6-foot, 170-pounder appears to be in the early stages of his physical development with plenty of room to add to his athletic frame. The underclassmen impressed sitting 81-83 with hip coil to his delivery from a high 3/4 arm slot. Arm action is loose and fastball displays late sink. Boyan also displayed solid feel for three complimentary pitches including a splitter at 70 mph that has late tumbling action. A curveball with 11/5 rotation at 68-70 and a 75 mph changeup with good sell round out his four pitch mix. Boyan is an arm to follow in this class.
Zack Murray, 2018, RHP, Hughersville HS
6-foot-2, 195-pounder with projectable frame. Sat 74-77 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with a sound, repeatable delivery. Additional concentration on lower half drive and intent would see velocity spike immediately. Curveball showed looping 11/5 rotation at 62 mph and slider displayed later, tighter break at 65-67. Worked three scoreless innings allowing three hits while not walking a batter.
