Eastern PA Fall Review Analysis: Outfielders

By Jacob Gill
Pennsylvania Assistant Director of Scouting

Widener University was the host for the Eastern PA Fall Review on an erratic weather day that brought sun, clouds, wind, and the occasional shower to the proceedings. Nonetheless, thirty-five participants made the trek to showcase their abilities.  In the penultimate of a series of profiles, today we look at eleven outfielders who were in attendance.

Note: long grass and overnight rain led to a slow track for the 60-yard dash, in which many participants were two-to three-tenths slower than previously recorded. Check profile for top recorded time.

Mitch Amenta, 2016, Souderton Area
5-foot-11, 170-pound right-handed hitter. Only participated in showcase (no game action) as a position player. Hits from a slightly open stance and double-taps his front foot in his stride. Contacts ball out front in a pull-oriented stroke. Would benefit from additional strength gains and more fully incorporating his backside into his swing. Ran a 7.39 60-yard dash and posted a 79-mph exit velocity. Defensively, he showcased accurate 78-mph arm strength.

Ryan Bealer, 2018, North Penn
5-foot-10, 155-pound right-handed hitter. Starts from a slightly open stance and double-taps his front foot to square. Stays on top of the ball in a mechanically-sound swing with a little bit of top-half dive, but otherwise minimal excess body movement. Would benefit from additional strength gains. Ran a 7.19 60-yard dash and 4.50 in-game home-to-1B time, while posting a 72-mph exit velocity. Defensively, he showcased accurate 73-mph arm strength.

Brett Foulke, 2017, Notre Dame Green Pond
5-foot-11, 185-pound right-handed hitter. Only participated in showcase (no game action). Hits from a square stance with short stride. Keeps head and body still throughout swing. Has a bit of a barrel wrap that can create some length, although he routinely barreled the baseball during his BP round. Ran a 7.35 60-yard-dash and posted an 80-mph exit velocity. Defensively, he showcased 73-mph arm strength from a low slot that caused some tailing action.

Kyle Hess, 2018, Donegal
6-foot, 170-pound left-handed hitter. Starts from wide open stance and strides to square. Takes a fairly short path to the baseball and flashes some bat speed. Has a pre-swing bat waggle that creates hand rhythm, but can occasionally cause him to be late if he doesn't get loaded on time. Ran a 7.00 60-yard dash and posted an 82-mph exit velocity. Defensively, he showcased accurate 80-mph arm strength with some carry.

Evan Marushak, 2018, Emmaus
5-foot-11, 170-pound left-handed hitter. Hit from a slightly closed stance. Stayed through an offspeed pitch away and lined it to centerfield for a single his first at-bat, running a 4.50 home-to-1B time on the turn. No other measureables available has he did not participate in the showcase portion of the event.

Jacoby Pate, 2017, Susquehanna Township
5-foot-8, 150-pound left-handed hitter. Starts from an open stance and strides slightly closed. Pull-oriented stroke has some length, but also flashes some batspeed and exhibits loose hands. Has solid wheels (6.94 60-yard dash; 3.50 on a steal) and would benefit from additional strength gains (70-mph exit velocity). Defensively, despite some arm soreness that prevented him from pitching, he showcased 79-mph arm strength.

Matthew Peralta, 2016, Central Bucks West
5-foot-8, 145-pound left-handed hitter. Starts from an open stance and strides slightly closed. Aggressive hitter with pull-oriented stroke who gets after his pitch when he sees it. Ran a 7.15 60-yard dash and 4.53 home-to-1B time on a turn, while posting an 80-mph exit velocity. Defensively, he moved well and showcased accurate 85-mph arm strength on a low trajectory.

Nick Picariello, 2017, Germantown Academy
5-foot-9, 185-pound right-handed hitter. Starts from an open stance and strides to slightly open. Showed an ability to use the middle of the field and drive the ball to the opposite field gap when he is on time. Ran a 7.26 60-yard dash and 4.72 in-game home-to-1B time on a turn, while posting an 82-mph exit velocity. Defensively, he showcased 88-mph arm strength and also flashed ability at his primary position of RHP (full pitching report coming tomorrow).

Brandon Reis, 2017, La Salle
5-foot-11, 170-pound right-handed hitter. Hits from a square stance with short, lift-and-replace stride, keeping his eyes level and staying behind his front side. Slightly uphill path and would benefit from keeping hands and barrel in contact zone longer. Ran a 7.44 60-yard dash and posted a 78-mph exit velocity. Defensively, he showcased 74-mph arm strength and made a diving play in left field, got up, and doubled-off the runner at first base.

Ryan Smith, 2017, Garden Spot
6-foot-2, 165-pound left-handed hitter. Lean frame, especially through waist; will benefit from additional strength gains. Starts from a slightly open stance and strides to square. Simple approach with minimal excess body movement. Barrel wrap creates some length, although stroke is fairly smooth and he repeats it. Ran a 7.59 60-yard-dash and in-game 4.62 home-to-1B time, while posting an 83-mph exit velocity. Defensively, he showcased accurate 75-mph arm strength.

Bobby Whalen, 2019, Cedar Cliff
5-foot-11, 160-pound right-handed hitter who seemingly comes out of his shoes on every swing. Starts from an open stance and strides to a slightly open, narrow base. Spins hard on his backside with approach geared to lift the ball in the air. An armbar creates length in his path, while he does flash batspeed. Ran a 7.59 60-yard dash and an in-game 4.90 home-to-1B time, while posting a 79-mph exit velocity. Defensively, he showcased 80-mph arm strength with low trajectory from a low arm slot.
