Game Recaps: Pair of Champions Crowned
May 27, 2018
Philadelphia Catholic League Championship
In a game that pitted the top two seeds in the tournament, La Salle avenged a regular season 5-4 loss to Archbishop Carroll in convincing fashion with a 10-0 win in five innings. The game was over for all intents and purposes after the first inning when La Salle starer Joe Miller, a Pennsylvania recruit, worked around a lead off walk and errant pick off attempt. With nobody out and a runner at third, Miller then struck out the two, three and four hitters in the Carroll lineup. La Salle then exploded for seven runs while sending 13 batters to the plate in the bottom half of the inning.
Miller was in control throughout, allowing just three hits while striking out eight for the complete game win. Every starter in the La Salle lineup contributed at least one hit with seniors Eric Marasheski (2-4, 1 R, 2 RBI), Andrew Cossetti (2-2, 2 R, 2 RBI) and Anthony Cossetti (3-3, 1 R, 1 RBI) doing most of the damage at the top of the order. The trio are headed to Princeton, St. Joseph's and Navy respectively in the fall.
The title is La Salle's first since 2013. Archbishop Carroll was looking to win the PCL crown for the first time since 2004.
PAISAA CHAMPIONSHIP
Malvern Prep cruised to a 10-1 win in the semifinals at 4:00pm with 2019 LHP Liam Dabagian going the distance. After a short drive across town from The Perkiomen School to Upper Perkiomen High School, the Friars met Episcopal Academy for the title at 7:00pm. The Churchmen topped The Perkiomen School 5-4 in the semifinals to earn a berth in the title game.
Episcopal jumped on Pitt recruit Billy Corcoran for three first inning runs and appeared primed for an upset early, but Malvern answered with four runs in the bottom of the second and established control of the game with five more runs in the third.
Sophomore third baseman Connor Offshack, an Elon commit, led the Friars' offense going 2-for-2 with a triple and four RBI. Offshack participated in the 2017 PBR Future Games as a member of Team Pennsylvania.
Malvern Prep completes the season at 30-7 winning its fourth state independent schools' title in the past five year and its seventh since 2006.
