Ian Happ Carries the Torch for Pennsylvania's Class of 2012
December 5, 2018
Ian Happ was ranked No. 16 in the Pennsylvania Class of 2012 rankings, the year that Prep Baseball Report began operations in the state. Five Pennsylvania high school prospects heard their name called that spring in the 2012 MLB Draft, but Happ was not one of them.
The talented switch-hitting shortstop shined at Mt. Lebanon High School prior to moving on to the University of Cincinnati where he put together an impressive three year resume. Happ was named an Academic All-American as a freshman and to the American Athletic Conference 1st Team as a sophomore. It was the success of his junior year that propelled him up the draft boards.
As a junior Happ was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Year. The Golden Spikes Award semifinalist was also named a 1st Team All-American. Happ went on to be drafted in the 1st Round of the 2015 MLB Draft by the Chicago Cubs.
Happ's rise through the Cubs farm system was swift landing him in Chicago in 2017 where he hit 24 home runs while driving in 68 runs as a rookie over 117 games. As an every day starter in 2018 Happ hit 15 home runs and drove in 44.
Happ's MLB career started with a bang when he hit a two-run home run in his third at bat of his Major League debut.
