PBR Limited Series Review: Top Pitching Prospects

Greg Williams
Pennsylvania Director of Scouting

The inaugural PBR Limited Series tournament took place June 28-30 with eight teams participating in a round robin format over the course of three days at McGill Field on the campus of Lebanon Valley College. The field was comprised of four 15U teams and four 16U teams hailing from three states.

Today we begin a review of the teams in attendance with a look at some of the top pitching prospects over the course of three days.

Braedon Karpathios LHP / 1B / Lampeter-Strasburg, PA / 2021

Two-way prospect is a Coastal Carolina commit. Currently ranked No. 32 in his class, Karpathios will be making a significant move up the rankings in the near future following a stellar high school season and a strong start to his summer. The lefty showed balance and rhythm to his delivery with above average feel for three quality pitches. He sat 83-85 out of a 3/4 arm slot with some sink to his fastball. His changeup is thrown with good sell and showed similar fade at 75-76. The pitch that sets him apart is a wipeout curveball at 70-73. The pitch has 1/7 rotation and significant depth.

Brendon Bair 1B / RHP / Bishop McCort, PA / 2021

6-foot-1, 205-pounder looks even bigger in uniform. The physical righty sat 88-92 out of a 3/4 arm slot with a very quick arm. Much of his velocity comes from strength in his lower half. Four-seam fastball has late life at 90-92 while touching 93 mph multiple times. Two-seam fastball sat 85-88 with heavy arm-side run. Also showed the ability to drop to a lower arm slot on the fastball for a different look. Fastball command was below average, but their is enough athleticism that the delivery can be cleaned up to eliminate much of the issue. Showcased a slider with tight rotation at 73-76 that was commanded with greater regularity. The potential to be a mid-90s arm in short order is present while a need for pounding the zone will be the main concern for schools that show interest.

Carter Welch LHP / OF / Northwestern Lehigh, PA / 2021

6-foot-2, 180-pounder showcased the best command of a three pitch mix of any pitcher over the course of the 12 games played. The lefty sits 80-83 and has shown continual velocity gains over the past 24 months. Arm slot varies between high 3/4 and 3/4 allowing him to manipulate different pitches in different counts. Depending on the arm slot he has the ability to create arm-side run and cut on his fastball. Curveball shows 1/7 rotation with a high spin rate and depth at 64-65. His changeup was by far the top of the event at 70-71 and was able to be commanded in all counts.

Jack Rothenhausler RHP / 1B / Liberty, PA / 2021

Physical 6-foot, 215-pound two-way prospect has a chance to do both at the next level. The primary pitcher sat 81-83 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with a compact delivery and a strong lower half. Displayed above average command of two pitches with his curveball at 69-72 creating plenty of swing and miss. The curveball has tight 11/5 rotation and two-plane bite.

Max McGrady OF / RHP / Central Bucks East, PA / 2022

Definite two-way prospect will be discussed at length in a coming article as a hitter. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound righty sat 80-83 out of an over-the-top arm slot. Creates some angle with the arm slot and some cut on the fastball led to soft contact. Curveball at 69-71 morphs between a true curveball and a cutter/slider with the arm slot and depending if he stays on top of the pitch or gets around it.

Matt Lingenfelter OF / RHP / State College Area, PA / 2021

5-foot-10, 160-pound righty sat 82-84 from a 3/4 arm slot with some effort to his delivery. Starts with a side rocker step and flashed a quick arm with some arm-side run to his fastball. Breaking ball has slurve shape at 67-71. Changeup at 69-70 is thrown with good intent.

Logan Divald RHP / Norwin, PA / 2021

6-foot-1, 160-pound righty sat 83-84 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with arm-side run to his fastball. Am action is short in back, but gets some length out front. Curveball is a pitch still in development at 69-71 and may need to be converted to a cutter to better utilize his natural arm action. A changeup at 74-76 was commanded for strikes with some arm-side run. Athletic frame has room to add strength and additional velocity is likely in the near future.

Ben Shenosky RHP / 3B / Manheim Township, PA / 2022

6-foot-4, 195-pound righty has an extremely projectable frame with room to add another 15 to 20 pounds of strength. He sat 78-81 out of a 3/4 arm slot with a long arm motion. Showed feel for a curveball that showed 10/4 rotation and more slider action when thrown harder. The pitch varied in velocity with more depth at 62-63 and more break at 64-65. Utilized an effective changeup at 70-72 routinely in any count for swing and misses. The potential is evident for significant velocity spikes moving forward, especially if the arm action and pace of delivery are sped up. Went the distance for a complete game shutout during his appearance.

Will Hunt

Will HuntRHP / Lewis county, wv / 2021

6-foot-1, 160-pounder sat 81-83 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with a long, easy arm action. Pounded the zone with an up tempo delivery and continuously worked ahead in the count. Showed good arm speed on his curveball at 72-74 with late 11/5 break. Changeup was thrown infrequently at 73-74 but was a solid third offering. Went the distance in a complete game shutout during his appearance.

Will Conrad 1B / RHP / Bishop Shanahan, PA / 2022

6-foot-1, 160-pounder has an athletic frame which has room to fill out in time. He sat 80-81 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with the ability to create swing and miss up in the zone. His curveball, while still in development, flashed solid depth at 62-65 with 11/5 rotation. A knuckle ball used as his third pitch needs to be eliminated and replaced with a changeup or cutter.

Cole Fehrman

cole fehrmanLHP / Central Bucks West, PA / 2022

6-foot-1, 140-pound lefty has long levers and plenty of room to add strength over the coming years. He sat 79-81 with a loose arm action out of a 3/4 arm slot. Gets downhill well and commands a two-pitch mix. Curveball at 68-71 showed 1/7 rotation and the potential to be a quality second pitch.

Jordan Ford RHP / 1B / Richland, PA / 2021

6-foot-1, 220-pounder works out of a high 3/4 arm slot with heavy cut to his fastball at 78-81. Fastball missed a lot of barrels and induced plenty of weak contact. Also commands a curveball at 68-71 with late 11/5 rotation that shows two-plane action at times. Potential to add strength to frame.
