The 2018 Western PA Fall Scout Day took place on September 30th at Allegheny College. Prospects gathered to put themselves on the recruiting radar by participating in a showcase workout. Today we analyze the Class of 2019 participants in attendance.

Top Prospects

Marc Caggiano, 2019, Gateway, 3B/SS

Marc Caggiano

Defensively, at third base feet are active to and through the ball. Shows solid fundamentals in workin bottom up and out front with confident hands. Transfer and arm action are clean on throws of 78 mph across the diamond.

Offensively, 5-foot 11, 175 pound, right-handed hitter initiate swing from narrow, slightly open set up with stride staying open. Separation, weight shift and hip turn demonstrate intent. Hands are loose and quick in achieving considerable barrel whip. There is length. A bat exit velocity of 88 mph was registered.

Kullen Crosby, 2019, Coudersport, 3B

Kullen Crosby

Defensively, at third base flashes soft hands and active feet while funneling out front and bottom up. Registered 78 mph arm strength on throws across the diamond.

Offensively, 6-foot, 180 pound , right-handed hitter initiates swing from slightly open set up with short stride staying open. Separation is solid. Weight shift and hip turn show intent. Hands are loose and quick. Bat is on plane early and late spending considerable time in hitting zone. There is balance, rhythm and leverage. Crosby turned in an impressive round of BP flashing power to all fields. A bat exit velocity of 87 mph was registered.

Nick Rinella, 2019, Meadville, SS/3B

Nick Rinella

Defensively, at third base hands are quick and soft. There is tendency to work top down and play the ball deep. Above average area quickness and range are present. Transfer is clean followed by a short, quick arm stroke and release. Arm strength of 76 mph was registered on throws across the diamond. Athleticism is evident in making slow roller play with ease. Rinella ran a solid for corner infield 60-yard dash of 7.12.

Offensively, 5-foot-9, 170 pound, right-handed hitter initiates swing from open set up with controlled stride to neutral. Solid separation is achieved through stride and weight shift away from hands. Hands are loose, quick and direct to the baseball with substantial barrel whip present. There is balance, rhythm and athleticism to swing. A bat exit velocity of 90 mph was registered. Rinella projects as uncommitted 2019 sleeper with versatile skill set.  

Zach Wilson, 2019, Meadville, OF/RHP

Zach Wilson

Defensively, in outfield catches ball at it's height. Wilson would benefit from getting behind and playing through the ball in the air. Shows confident glove hand and proper fundamentals in playing ball on the ground. Flashed 83 mph arm strength.

Offensively, 5-foot 10, 185 pound right-handed hitter initiates swing from open set up with reverse toe tap and stride staying neutral. Separation is adequate. Weight shift and hip turn are aggressive. There is balance and rhythm. Hands are loose, quick and direct in achieving substantial barrel whip. Bat path is flat and consistent. A bat exit velocity of 85 mph was registered. Wilson has made impressive gains in all areas of his game since being seen one year ago. He projects as an uncommitted 2019 next level offensive threat with versatility to play both corner infield and outfield positions.

On the mound, right-hander works out of a high 3/4 arm slot with moderate effort, repeatable delivery. Fast ball sat 79-83 mph with sink/run. Curveball at 68-71 mph was commanded inconsistently while at best showing 11/5 shape, late break and moderate depth. Change up had makings of quality secondary offering being thrown with good sell and movement at 69-73 mph.

Brycen Virgili, 2019, Canon-McMillan, OF

Brycen Virgili

Defensively, in outfield actions are deliberate but athletic. Consistently gets behind and plays through ball in the air and on the ground. Shows confident glove hand and proper technique in playing ball on the ground. Flashed accurate 78 mph arm.

Offensively, 6- foot, 180 pound, right-handed hitter initiates swing from open , narrow set up with reverse toe tap and aggressive stride staying open. Separation is excellent. Weight shift and hip turn are aggressive. There is balance and rhythm in achieving considerable whip. Bat is on plane early and late. Virgili stays behind ball and rotates into a firm front side achieving solid lerage. He turned in an impressive round of BP flashing above average contact skills, ability to use whole field and present power while registering a bat exit velocity of 88 mph. Overall, this is an uncommitted 2019 who projects as an early next level offensive contributor.

REMAINDER OF THE ROSTER (IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER)

Austin Gabel, 2019, Conneaut, RHP/SS

On the mound, 6-foot-2, 175 pound, right-hander works out of mid 3/4 arm slot with moderate effort, repeatable delivery. There is balance and rhythm lending to solid fastball command. Fastball sat 79-81 mph with consistent arm side run. Curveball at 70-71 mph was inconsistent on this day showing 11/5 shape and limited depth. Change up sat 74-76 mph and was quality secondary offering being thrown with good sell, solid command and consistent fade.

Kaden Keely, 2019, Franklin, LHP/1B

On the mound, 6-foot, 170 pound left-hander works out of high 3/4 arm slot with low effort delivery. Arm action is long and loose. Delivery has rhythm and athleticism is evident. Fastball sat 80-81 mph with demonstrated ability to cut to both sides of the plate. Curveball command was spotty. At it's best the pitch showed late, slurvy action with 1/7 shape. Slider at 70-71 mph had makings of developing into quality out pitch with 1/8 shape, tight spine and solid tilt. Change up at 71-72 mph was thrown at fastball arm speed with consistent arm side fade/sink. While Keely did not have his best command on this day, the quality of his stuff, arm action and athleticism continue to make him an interesting uncommitted left-handed arm.

Alex Knox, 2019, Meadville, 3B/SS

Defensively at third base and shortstop hands are adequate in funneling bottom up and out front. Transfer is clean while arm action has length. Knox would benefit from being more aggressive in attacking and playing through the ball. Arm strength of 70 mph was registered on throws across the diamond.

Offensively, 5-foot-9, 165 pound, right-handed hitter initiates swing from neutral set up with controlled stride staying neutral. Separation is adequate. Weight shift and hip turn are solid. Balance and rhythm are present. Swing is short with hands working directly to the ball. Bat path is slightly uphill with tendency to leave the zone early. Knox would benefit from staying through the ball longer. A bat exit velocity of 78 mph was registered. 

Ryan Meneskie, 2019, Moon Area, C/2B

Defensively, behind the plate Meneskie flashes solid flexibility in presenting a low target. Glove hand is quiet and confident in framing. Shows solid blocking technique with soft, square wall and proper trunk angle. Feet are quick while transfer has length in recording pop time of 2.19.

Offensively, 5-foot-9, 160 pound, right-handed hitter initiates swing from narrow, slightly open set up with aggressive stride to neutral. Separation, weight shift, hip turn and back side release are synced and solid. There is balance and rhythm while staying behind the ball achieving excellent leverage. A bat exit velocity of 74 mph was registered.

Defensively, as middle infielder soft hands demonstrated behind the plate play. Showed improved fundamentals in playing ball out front and bottom up. Arm strength of 72 mph was registered on throws across the diamond. 

Daniel Morgano, 2019, Vincentian Academy, RHP/3B

Defensively, at third base funnels bottom up while intermittently playing the ball deep. Feet are active in working to the baseball and following throws. Transfer is clean while arm action has length. Morgano registered 75 mh arm strength on throws across the diamond. 

Offensively, 6-foot-3, 180 pound, right-handed hitter initiates swing from neutral set up with knee lift and controlled stride staying neutral. Separation and weight shift are adequate. Hip turn is aggressive. Hands are loose and quick. Bart path is flat with barrel spending extended time in hitting zone. Barrel feel was evident during impressive round of BP featuring consistent solid contact and substantial pull side power. A bat exit velocity of 90 mph was registered. 

Shane Murphy, 2019, North Allegheny, 3B/RHP

Defensively, at third base shows soft hands and solid fundamentals in funneling bottom up ad out front. Feet are active. Transfer and arm action are clean. Arm strength of 71 mph was registered on throws across the diamond.

Offensively, 5-foot-11, 175 pound, right-handed hitter initiates swing from neutral with knee lift and controlled stride staying neutral. Separation is adequate. Weight shift is passive followed by an aggressive hip turn. Aggressive hip turn and limited backside release pull barrel out of zone early. Bat path is flat and Murphy is able to get on plane early. A bat exit velocity of 83 mph was registered. 

Andy Sopata, 2019, Baldwin, OF/2B

Defensively, in outfield catches ball at it' height. sopata consistently gets behind ball and plays through ball both in the air and on the ground. Consistent with secondary middle infield position he shows confident glove hand in playing ball on the ground. An accurate 74 mph arm was demonstrated.

Defensively, in middle infield shows adequate hands. Quick twitch skills translate to solid area quickness and range. Arm strength of 71 mph was registered on throws across the diamond.

Offensively, 6-foot-1, 175 pound, right-handed hitter initiates swing from slightly open set up with knee lift and short stride to neutral. Separation continues to be reduced by early hand leak and passive weight shift. Hip turn and back side release are solid. Bat is on plane early and late. There is excellent barrel feel. A bat exit velocity of 81 mph was registered.

Jacob Stotsky, 2019, Vincentian Academy, C/2B

Defensively, behind the plate demonstrates good flexibility in providing low, wide target. Hands are adequate in receiving and framing. Flashes above average range and athleticism while presenting a soft wall in blocking. Feet are quick while transfer and arm stroke have length in recording pop time of 2.21 on throw of 70 mph out of the crouch.

Defensively, as middle infielder feet work well to and through the ball. Hands are adequate in funneling bottom up and out front. Shows clean transfer and quick release on throw of 69 mph across the diamond. 

Offensively, 6-foot, 170 pound right-handed hitter initiates swing from open set up with short stride to neutral. Separation is reduced by passive weight shift. Hip turn is aggressive and swing is connected. Hands are loose and quick while working directly to the baseball. Bat is on plane early and late. Solid barrel feel was demonstrated in consistent squaring of ball during round of BP. A bat exit velocity of 78 mph was registered.

Levi Henderson, 2019, Cambridge Springs, RHP/SS

Defensively at third base and shortstop shows adequate hands in funneling out front. There is tendency to work top down. Transfer is clean while throwing motion has length on throws of 77 mph across the diamond. 

Offensively, 5-foot-10, 160 pound, left-handed hitter initiates swing from neutral set up with lift and replace stride. Separation is adequate. Weight shift is passive followed by an aggressive hip turn. Bat is on plane early and late. henderson stays behind the ball and works into firm front side with leverage. A bat exit velocity of 83 mph was registered.

On the mound, right-hander works out of mid 3/4 arm slot with moderate effort, repeatable delivery. Fastball sat 74-76 mph with consistent arm side run and sink. Curveball was a quality secondary pitch flashing 11/5 shape and moderate depth while being commanded. Change up at 70 mph was thrown at fastball arm speed and was also commanded featuring solid fade/sink.
