Prep Baseball Report

Where Are They Now?: 2018 IF Sean Guilbe

Greg Williams
Pennsylvania Director of Scouting

The Super 60 Pro Showcase in February has been a staple of the Prep Baseball Report's pro coverage over the last 15 years. Prospects often use the event as a springboard to their senior season of high school baseball and the MLB Draft.

Muhlenberg graduate Sean Guilbe shined at the 2018 event and finished his high school career ranked No. 2 in the PA Class of 2018. Guilbe was also No. 85 in the PBR overall rankings.

Following a banner senior season of high school baseball Guilbe was selected in the 12th round by the San Diego Padres. The 3B/OF played his initial season of professional baseball at the Rookie League level in the Arizona League.

Guilbe's top tool as a high school prospect was the ability to hit for power and that trait held true last summer. Over the course of 40 games Guilbe recorded 29 hits with 16 of them going for extra bases (10 doubles, a triple, 5 home runs). The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder divided his time in his first season between third base and second base while seeing limited action as an outfielder.

Scouting Report

- 2018 PBR Super 60 Pro Showcase

2/12/17 6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed hitter is verbally committed to St. John's. Has big power potential (96 mph exit velocity). Starts from an open, upright stance in a relaxed set-up and takes a controlled stride to square. Short load of hands, hits against front side, and swings with intent to get the baseball airborne. May end up outgrowing the middle infield, but a transition to third base is easy to envision. Exhibits good feet with a soft glove hand, a loose, easy arm action, and ability to complete the slow roller play.

11/13/16 Physical right-handed hitter has shown the ability to consistently hit at top national level events over the past 18 months. Average runner will likely end up at a corner infield position moving forward. Athletic enough to man corner outfield positions as and has shown promise behind the dish as well.

5/11/15 Guilbe showed advanced bat speed and a direct swing path in barreling the baseball in all four trips to the plate. The freshman turned on an inner half fastball in his final at bat and drove the ball some 380 feet to the left field bleachers for a solo home run. He flashed soft hands and good feet (4.43) at shortstop with more than enough arm strength to remain on the left side of the infield at the next level.
