Inside the Rankings: Top 10 Class of 2021 Corner Infielders

With our latest rankings release for the 2021 class we decided to dive in deeper with a breakdown of the top 10 in each position. Today we wrap up our coverage with corner infielders. 


Disclaimer: Players listed below are ranked in order of their PRIMARY listed position on the website that they have chosen. A dual player that is also strong at their secondary position may carry more weight in their overall ranking.

Top 10 Corner Infielders / Class of 2021

Chance Checca 3B / OF / Ballston Spa, NY / 2021


Quick Hit:
Tremendous all-around athlete who can handle the hot corner but also slide in at an outfield spot if need be. Consistent sub 7.00 runner with a personal best of 6.78.

First Glimpse: Preseason - East (February 2019). Showed athleticism with strength in the box.

Breakout Performance: 2019 HS Postseason.

The Future: The uncommitted Checca put together an impressive 2019 campaign by finishing his HS season with a flourish with a state title. Shortly after, a strong NYS Games and Future Games effort put him under a much brighter spotlight.

Ryan Birchard 1B / RHP / Auburn , NY / 2021


Quick Hit: 
Physical 6-foot-1 205 pound LHH with pullside pop and can run it up in the mid to upper 80's on the mound. 

First Glimpse: CNY All-Star Games (October 2018). Loose efforts at the plate with solid, line drive contact. 

Breakout Performance: Preseason - West (February 2019)

The Future: The uncommitted dual prospect has room for polish but the physical tools are there on both sides of the ball. Looking forward to seeing Birchard back on the field again.

Danny Rogers 3B / 2B / Troy , NY / 2021


Quick Hit: 
Strong build at 6-foot-0 182 pounds; quick, explosive swing path with juice to the pull side.

First Glimpse: 2018 NYS Games. Easy effort with big results at the dish.

Breakout Performance: 2018 Future Games.

The Future: The Rutgers commit projects well at either 3B or 2B. High end offensive skill set that will stay in the lineup at the next level. Hoping to see him again in the near future.

TJ Wachter 1B / RHP / The Stony Brook School, NY / 2021


Quick Hit: 
Massive frame at 6-foot-7 230 pounds. Shows pop to all fields with athletic actions around the bag. Also works mid 80's on the bump with more to come.

First Glimpse: 2018 NYS Games. Spread stance with a quiet approach through the middle of the field. 

Breakout Performance: 2019 Call to the Hall.

The Future: The Fordham commit will only continue to pack on strength to his frame and become a big time power threat at the next level. Look for additional velocity and polish on the mound to where he could carry some dual potential to the next level.

Evan Diaz 3B / All Hallows , NY / 2021


Quick Hit: 
Well put together 5-foot-10 173 pound RHH with gap ability at the plate. Above average runner at position, typically in the 6.9-7.1 range.

First Glimpse: Preseason - Downstate (February 2018). Impressive athleticism with an aggressive stroke at the plate

Breakout Performance: Preseason - Downstate (February 2019)

The Future: The NJIT commit will look to continue to improve off an impressive skill set. Athleticism could allow for some OF play or possibly a shift to 2B at the next level.

Sean Lane 1B / St. Dominics, NY / 2021


Quick Hit: 
Full Frame at 6-foot-3 200+ pounds. The RHH has shown plenty of present pop at the dish

First Glimpse: Spring 2019 Scout Blog. 

Breakout Performance: N/A

The Future: The Maryland commit will continue to expand off his pull-side pop and develop to all fields. Looking forward to getting a more detailed glimpse the the Long Island resident in the future.

Diego Urreta 3B / 2B / The Harvey School, NY / 2021


Quick Hit: 
Sweet swinging LHH that is a 2020 reclassification. Steady glove either at 3B or 2B with a high end offensive skill set. 

First Glimpse: ENY - ASG (September 2017). Exhibited above average barrel control at a young age.

Breakout Performance: Preseason - Downstate (February 2018)

The Future: The uncommitted Westchester County resident already had generated quite a bit of interest over the last few years and that will only continue to grow. Looking forward to seeing him once again at the 2020 NYS Games.

Trevor Dutra 1B / OF / Iona Preparatory, NY / 2021


Quick Hit: 
Slugging left-handed hitter had a strong summer at the plate putting on a power display at the Campus Series Event at Stony Brook and also at the Future Games in Georgia.

First Glimpse: Big Apple Preview (October 2017). Early glimpses at his power showed through at this event. 

Breakout Performance: Campus Series - Stony Brook

The Future: The uncommitted LHH will continue work his game around the bag at 1B and expand his abilities at the plate to drive the ball to all fields. Will be a run producer at the plate for years to come.

Jacob Yager 1B / RHP / Tri-Valley, NY / 2021


Quick Hit: 
One of the physically stronger players at 6-foot-3 230 pounds. He's made a jump in the corner infield rankings while also showing poise on the mound working up to 86 MPH with feel for his secondary offerings. Present pop at the plate.

First Glimpse: Preseason - Hudson Valley (February 2019)

Breakout Performance: Summer 2019.

The Future: The uncommitted RHH made a name for himself appearing in multiple scout blogs last summer and with a strong showing at this year's Preseason-Hudson Valley Event. Will have plenty of eyes on him at the 2020 NYS Games.

Nick Cutaia 1B / OF / Fox Lane, NY / 2021


Quick Hit: 
Physical, square shouldered build at 5-foot-11 195 pounds who can produce loud contact through the middle to pull side parts of the field.

First Glimpse: Preseason - Downstate (February 2018). Some length in the swing but showed offensive potential.

Breakout Performance: 2019 NYS Games.

The Future: The uncommitted RHH continues to get better each time out and has put himself in a strong position to be a highly sought after bat at the 2020 NYS Games.
