DFW Underclass Trials: Quick Hits

Toby Bicknell
Texas Scouting Director

DALLAS, TX - The DFW Underclass Trials was loaded with talent as 90 players in the 2020-2022 grad classes converged on the Dallas Baptist University campus on Tuesday. We will be rolling out stats, content and videos in the next week with more in depth reports to come, but here are some quick hits from what we say yesterday.

+ 2020 C/OF Nathaniel Price (Mansfield Legacy HS) has an ultra-quick exchange behind the plate and threw bullets to second base with pop times of 1.83, 1.83, 1.91, and 1.94. He also makes strong contact at the plate with an exit velocity of 93 mph (tee). Quick-twitch, athletic player with solid all-around tools.

+ 2020 OF Elijah Nunez (Arlington Martin HS) started the day by running a 6.62 60-yard dash, then showed off quick hands with strength with natural lift from the left-side of the plate (93 exit velo off the tee). Nunez also threw 84 mph from the outfield as he played through the ball with a clean exchange and athleticism.

+ 2021 OF Tyler Collins (McKinney Boyd HS) was an everyday player this year on varsity for Boyd and ran a 6.78 to start the workout. He threw 83 from the outfield and registered an exit velocity of 85 mph off the tee, but it’s the quick, left-handed stroke that impresses scouts as Collins has the ability to turn around 90 mph fastballs with the flick of his wrists.

+ 2020 RHP/SS Tyler Talbert (Flower Mound HS) has an aggressive hack from the right side with smooth rhythm and loose hands as he transfers his lower half through contact. He threw 90 mph from the outfield, 91 mph across the infield, and shows arm side life on his fastball that ranged from 85-87, to go with a quality changeup at 75-76.

+ 2020 RHP Braxton Pearson (Georgetown HS) has a long-limbed frame at 6-foot, 165. The right-hander has a long, loose, quick arm and pumped strikes during his bullpen at 84-86, topping out at 88. Throws two breaking balls, a short breaking, lateral slider at 74-77, and a deeper breaking downer curveball at 71-75. Throws his changeup with fastball arm speed and good arm side fade at 80 mph.

+ 2020 RHP Nicholas Perry (Denton Braswell HS) has a future on the mound with a loose arm and projectable frame at 6-foot-4, 220-pounds, and look for the velocity to climb as he continues to develop. The ball comes out clean at 80-84, he throws a plus changeup at 71-72, and spun his curveball at 69 mph.

+ 2020 OF Henry Cooper Huspen (Allen HS) has a quick-twitch, athletic, wiry-strong frame at 6-foot-1, 154-pounds. He banged balls off the wall in left-centerfield gap during BP and threw 86 mph from the outfield.

+ 2020 C/3B Aidan Gebhart (Frisco Heritage HS) threw strikes to second base during the catchers workout with pop times of 2.08-2.19 at 76 mph. He also registered an exit velo of 92 mph and launched a home run during BP. His barrel stays in the zone a long time and he has quick hands.

+ 2020 SS/OF Alex Gonzales was an everyday player this year for an Argyle team that went undefeated and won the 4A State Championship. Gonzales has great all-around baseball tools. He ran a 6.85 60, and took an outstanding round of batting practice, lacing line drives from gap-to-gap. He can play infield and outfield, and has present strength and athleticism that should make him a coveted recruit in the ‘20 class.

+ 2020 1B/RHP Hunter Reid (Plano Senior HS) hammered balls to the opposite field gap during BP, and posted an exit velocity of 92 mph. Reid was a staple in the middle of the order at Plano this year and there is serious juice in the bat. He also showed good arm side run on his fastball at 83-84 mph from a ¾ slot. Throws a lateral breaking slider at 68-69 mph and a 71 mph changeup.

+ 2020 3B/1B Malikai Wickley (Reagan HS) has tons of strength in an already muscular frame at 6-foot-3, 190-pounds. He posted an exit velocity of 91 mph off the tee and the ball jumped off his bat during BP. The same could be said for 2020 1B/RHP Harrison Hess (Midlothian Heritage), who is a long-limbed, strong, projectable hitter at 6-foot-3, 195-pounds. Hess ran a 7.04 60, and his bat speed shows up during BP with strength in the barrell and hard contact.

+ The talent keeps rolling out from Bridge City HS in south Texas, including 2020 1B/OF Jackson Tims, who has a strong, left-handed bat to go with an accurate arm from the outfield.

+ 2020 RHP/SS Carson Ozmer (Denton Guyer) is a solid, all-around player with a projectable frame at 6-foot-1, 175-pounds. His swing works from the right side with quick hands, he is a confident defender at shortstop, and he was 84-85 off the mound, with a plus changeup at 77 mph.

+ Keep an eye on two left-handed hitting sophomores from Marcus HS, SS Ty Johnson and OF Sam Hunt. Both have quick hands with good bat speed and aggressive approaches, and both made hard contact during BP.

+ 2020 OF Jaxon Osterberg (Southlake Carroll HS) has a young, lean-strong, quick-twitch frame at 5-foot-10, 145-pounds. He ran a 6.7 60, made loud contact at the plate with quick hands, and plays through the ball with great athleticism, while making accurate throws to the dish at 86 mph.

+ The catching portion of the workout was outstanding with accurate throws on the bag, consistent pop times, and quality arm strength. Here are a couple of backstops that stood out. 2020 C Carter Pool (Keller HS) can really catch and throw, he showed outstanding carry to second base with pop times of 2.0-2.14 at 76 mph. Stood out during the bullpen session with soft hands and natural blocking skills. 2021 C Quaid Tschetter (Byron Nelson HS) has a strong arm behind the plate and put the ball on the bag with pop times of 1.97-2.04. The rising sophomore also ran a 6.96 and drove the ball deep to the gaps during BP. 2020 C Beau Preston (Prosper HS) has a strong frame (6-1/175) and a strong arm behind the plate. Preston's pop times were consistent at 2.07, 2.1, 2.07, 2.0, and 2.08. 2020 C Weston Peninger (Flower Mound HS) stands 6-foot-3, 160-pounds, and has a the look of a projectable, offensive catcher. Really liked his swing during BP and his pop times were 2.12, 2.14, 2.18 and 2.23. 2020 C/SS Dylan Lee (Hutto HS) bounced around the field with real energy and quality body language all day. Natural baseball actions with quick feet at shortstop, soft hands behind the plate, and barreled up the baseball during BP. His pop times were 2.04-2.18. 2020 RHP Harrison Durow (Lovejoy HS) has a long, clean arm stroke from a high slot with a fastball that topped out at 85 mph, sitting mostly 83-84, with a 68-70 curveball, and 76-78 mph changeup.
