Norcal Underclass Trials: Top Prospects

The inaugural Northern California Underclass Trials went down at Vacaville Christian HS (CA) on June 12th. There were over 80 players in attendance. As part of our coverage we have rolled out top position players & pitchers and are now releasing our Top Overall Prospects from event.

NORCAL UNDERCLASS TRIALS TOP PROSPECTS

Treven Crowley RHP / SS / Hilmar, CA / 2020 POSITION PLAYER: Arm strength is a tool that definitely stood out, both in the defensive workout (89 mph across the diamond) and on the mound (more on that in the post about pitchers). Some throws were a bit wild but some of that was just in his effort to show the raw arm strength. Backing off a bit he still has plenty of arm. Ran 7.13 and showed a lively left-handed swing during the batting practice round. PITCHER: Crowley, a 6-foot-1 165-pound right-hander, was one of the most impressive all-around athletes and talents at the trials. Strictly looking at him as a pitcher, he got up to 89 mph and sat in the 87-88 mph range for is pen session. He pitches from a high-3/4 slot and has a fast, loose arm with a longer arm action. His lift is short and unique in that regard. Crowley's curveball is a good one, a potential out-pitch at the collegiate level (possibly beyond), with 11/5 action and late power type break. Also showed a change-up that has a chance.

Tyree Reed OF / Will C. Wood, CA / 2021 Long, lean and athletic, the left-handed hitting and throwing Reed has tools that stand out and also project for an even stronger future. Reed ran a 6.86 60-yard, let loose an 86 mph throw from the outfield, and roamed around the outfield during the BP session like a playmaker and ball tracker. He's got plus bat speed (80 mph exit speed) and projects to have some power in the future. Offensively he can get a little closed off but given the athleticism and talent, hitting adjustments are something he can make. Reed is 6-foot-2 170-pounds.

Thatcher Hurd C / RHP / Acalanes, CA / 2021 Hurd is a long lean and strong 6-foot-2 185-pound rising sophomore who stole the show in regard to catcher tools at the showcase. Throwing a low pop time of 1.94 while showing 80 mph velocity was impressive and speaks to his opportunity to develop into an elite catch/throw prospect. Offensively he recorded an exit speed of 81 mph and certainly projects to have power to the pull side.

Jason Booker OF / 3B / Angelo Rodriguez, CA / 2021 Yet another fleet-footed and toolsy outfielder, Booker is a wiry and electric type athlete who also possesses baseball talent that should nicely round into impactful baseball skill. Booker ran a 6.87 60-yard dash, drove the ball 86 mph off the tee, and with quick arm and quick release, posted a 80 mph velocity from the outfield. He also plays the infield (3B) so he possesses not only tools and projectability, he has multi-positional versatility. His bat speed is quite noticeable and he has a lashing type of stroke, though occasionally can drop his hands a bit.

Kenny DeCelle OF / OF / Vacaville, CA / 2020 DeCelle is a 6-foot-1 170-pound outfielder (R/R) with tools that stand out quite impressively. A multi-sport athlete, DeCelle is still building the skills that will project to higher levels of baseball, but adding up talents that include a 6.77 60-yard time, 88 mph exit speed off the tee, and 78 mph velocity from the outfield. DeCelle not only drove the ball with exit speed, but he has plenty of bat speed on the way to contact. His body type projects quite favorably as well. An athlete with projectable baseball tools certainly is on the wish list of college coaches.

Gavin Tonkel OF / RHP / Heritage , CA / 2021 Another player with present and projectable tools, Tonkel posted an impressive 6.81 60-yard time, while also having his outfield throws recorded at 80 mph. Tonkel has a long and lean body type, with streamlined proportions and the frame to continue to hold size and strength. Tonkel's exit speed off the tee was 80 mph and as a rising sophomore, his all-around tool set makes him a VERY intriguing prospect. Watching him shag during the BP round and the ball-tracking skills were also apparent, as was his energy. Tonkel is 6-foot-1 165-pounds with a R/R profile.

Tyler McCuistion SS / RHP / Rocklin , CA / 2021 POSITION PLAYER: Two-way prospect stood out as much as an infielder as he did as a pitcher. Good raw arm across the diamond up to 82 mph and plays the position athletically. 60 time was 7.26 and he has a chance to lower that in the coming years, but as is, he has the feet to play up the middle. Lean and wiry body type with potential to add mass, McCuistion showed a short stroke to the ball and already gives a hint at his power potential. PITCHER:Athletic player who has the delivery and aggressiveness of a shortstop on the mound. High-3/4 slot with a short and quick arm stroke. Gets to a good balance point and throws aggressively. There is some effort in the delivery but he's also working to be aggressive with his pitches. He does have some deception in his delivery. His fastball was up to 81 mph with some late life. The curveball was of the 12/6 variety and he showed feel of that pitch, which had late power break. Good feel of that pitch. Good extension and feel of the change-up which had good sink.

Brewster Mott OF / 1B / Vacaville, CA / 2021 Of the outfielders to make this list, Mott is the one with the power hitting corner type profile (R/R). At 6-foot-1 175-pounds he has wide shoulders and a frame that should hold size and strength as he physically matures. His bat speed and strength stood out on the tee with 85 mph exit speed and his swing possesses both strength and good barrel awareness. He's a fair runner at 7.39 in the 60-yard, again, projecting for a corner position. His 77 mph velocity throwing from the outfield is a number that can rise as he works to develop more arm strength and carry.

Victor Martinez RHP / 1B / Rodriguez, CA / 2020 Martinez is a 6-foot-2 185-pound two-way player with a strong athletic body type and good body control. On the mound he displayed the type of mound presence that exudes confidence and aggressiveness. Strong athletic delivery that he can repeat, with an on-line stride and good lower body stability. Could work to finish his follow through better. Fastball got up to 83 mph and steadily ranged in the 82-83 mph range. Secondary pitches also showed well, with the curveball and change-up both playing well off his fastball.
