South Milwaukee Preseason I.D.: Infielder Analysis

Last month we visited Hitters Baseball Academy to host our longest standing PBR Wisconsin showcase, the South Milwaukee Preseason I.D. Historically this event has brought some of the top talent the Badger State has to offer, and the 2020 version was no different. Throughout the week we will bring you our top ranked prospects, sorted by positions, complete with scouting reports.
We continue our rollout of the South Milwaukee Preseason I.D. with outfielders. For reference, you can always visit our Quick Hits edition, and Statistical Analysis from this event, which were released just days after the event.
In this edition the infield prospects impressed enough to separate our rankings by class, with three top five lists led by Noah Miller (Ozaukee, 2021), Gavin Kilen (Janesville Craig, 2022) and Alexander Alicea (St. Thomas More, 2023)
Here’s a look at the top-five in each class:
Top 2021 Infielders
1. Noah Miller, Ozaukee (WI), 2021 - Alabama
Positional Profile: SS/2B Top prospect in Wisconsi's 2021 class, high follow draft prospect.
Body: 6-foot-0, 175-pounds. Lean athlete, projectable frame to fill out.
Hit: SH. Balanced setup from the right side, narrower stance with taller setup from the left side, stays quiet and simple pre pitch. Lifted stride, moderate length, on time and in rhythm from both sides. Right handed path gets slightly more lift, stronger from the right side, left side swing is short to the baseball, shows excellent feel for the barrel from both sides. High follow hitter.
Power: 89 mph exit velocity from the tee. Best exit velocities from the right side.
Arm: RH. INF - 89 mph. Plus arm, plays within actions and able to get to arm strength with accuracy and efficiently, carries well across the diamond, short loose action with ability to work from multiple slots.
Defense: Plus defender, soft hands with advanced actions, works through the baseball with tempo, cuts down angles and gains ground, premium defender.
Run: 7.18 runner in the 60.
2. Benjamin Loyd, Tremper (WI), 2021 - Notre Dame
Positional Profile: SS/2B Top tier prospect in Wisconsin's 2021 class.
Body: 6-foot-0, 170-pounds. Lean athletic build, moderate present strength with frame to handle more.
Hit: LHH. Comfortable setup, balanced and slightly open, hanging stride, lands on time and in rhythm, excellent balance. Repeatable swing, easy bat speed with barrel awareness. Hits with a line drive gap to gap approach that can spray to all fields.
Power: 92 mph exit velocity from the tee. Sneaky strong with occasional pop off the bat.
Arm: RH. INF - 86 mph. Strong arm that carries and plays up across the diamond, highly accurate, short and loose arm action that plays athletically from multiple slots.
Defense: Advanced actions, hands plays soft and out front, quick light footwork through the baseball, clean quick transfers. Typical middle infield defender.
Run: 7.12 runner in the 60. Easy light-footed runner.
3. Brady Marget, Whitefish Bay (WI), 2021
Positional Profile: 1B/3B
Body: 6-foot-4, 195-pounds. High ceiling frame, long limbs, slender build.
Hit: LHH. Back loaded setup, soft front side, balanced stance, short stride, hands load back. Path has length, loose with bat speed, long levered swing.
Power: 87 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 85 mph. High 3/4 slot, long arm action, plays accurate across the diamond, showed carry across.
Defense: Soft hands, and fluid footwork, works well around the bag, natural feel. Above average athlete at first base with extra large target.
Run: 7.18 runner in the 60. Long stride, better top end than out of the box.
4. Brady Counsell, Whitefish Bay (WI), 2021
Positional Profile: 2B Physical development has translated well to improvements in his game.
Body: 6-foot-0, 160-pounds. Wiry frame, thin build, grown three inches since last year.
Hit: RHH. Balanced setup, lifted stride with moderate length as hands load into hitting position. Average balance through contact. Swing stays on plane, gets extension through contact, gap to gap approach hits in rhythm with feel for the barrel and solid middle of the field contact. High upside bat.
Power: 84 mph exit velocity from the tee. Will continue to develop with strength.
Arm: RH. INF - 85 mph. Works out of high 3/4 slot, occasional carry and showed ability to play accurate and on the move.
Defense: Improved actions plays lighter on the feet and works through the baseball, showed athleticism when on the move, above average body control.
Run: 7.33 runner in the 60.
5. Darryl Jackson, King (WI), 2021
Positional Profile: SS/2B Raw athlete who flashed quick twitch tools, uncommitted follow in the middle of the diamond.
Body: 5-foot-8, 150-pounds. Athletic quick twitch body.
Hit: RHH. Balanced stance, short rhythmic loading action. Above average bat speed, fast hands, path works uphill and lifts the baseball.
Power: 79 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 91 mph. Plus arm strength, long path at times, works out of high 3/4 slot, played accurate across with carry.
Defense: Soft hands and light footwork play through the baseball, athletic defender showed above average range and body control.
Run: 7.11 runner in the 60.
Top 2022 Infielders
1. Gavin Kilen, Janesville Craig (WI), 2022 - Louisville
Positional Profile: SS/2B Premium LHH middle infield prospect, likely 2022 draft follow.
Body: 5-foot-10, 170-pounds. Long legged, lean strength and still developing.
Hit: LHH. Relaxed, tall setup, even weight distribution, short lift and replace stride. Advanced bat speed on short path, line drive gap to gap hitter, advanced approach, in rhythm easy swing.
Power: 85 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 88 mph. Arm action plays athletic, works from multiple angles, natural high 3/4 slot, accurate across the diamond with carry.
Defense: Excellent hands, play quick and soft, easy actions, feet are fluid and light through the baseball.
Run: 7.02 runner in the 60. Above average runner.
2. Tristan Ellis, Greendale (WI), 2022 - Purdue
Positional Profile: SS
Body: 5-foot-7, 140-pounds. Lean, live wiry body.
Hit: LHH. Tall relaxed setup, quiet and simple pre-pitch, short stride, sinks into lower half. Swing is repeatable, short to the baseball and stays connected, level through contact, produces consistent line drives, gap to gap approach and works in rhythm.
Power: 84 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 87 mph. Short loose arm action, works out of high 3/4 slot, carries across the diamond.
Defense: Soft hands, above average range, easy actions, athletic and natural infield defender, plays through the baseball.
Run: 7.03 runner in the 60. Above average runner, light footed.
3. Ian Choi, Indian Trail (WI), 2022
Positional Profile: SS/2B Upward trending 2022, true middle infielder likely to project at shortstop at the next level.
Body: 5-foot-9, 150-pounds. Athletic compact body type.
Hit: RHH. Balanced stance, short stride, smooth hand load. Short path to the baseball, line drive gap to gap approach, hits in rhythm with bat speed, gets extension and consistently found the barrel.
Power: 93 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 88 mph. Athletic arm action plays from multiple slots, plays on target across the diamond with carry, plus arm strength for age.
Defense: Advanced actions, light and active feet, ranged well, easy actions that play through the baseball. Glove hand is soft, presents early and plays out in front.
Run: 6.88 runner in the 60. Athletic gait, advanced runner.
4. Mitchell Voit, Whitefish Bay (WI), 2022 - Michigan
Positional Profile: RHP/3B Premium arm strength and athlete in the 2022 class.
Body: 5-foot-11, 180-pounds. Strong athletic build, premium athlete.
Hit: RHH. Sets up slightly wide, balance weight distribution, smooth loading action is minimal movement, short minimal stride. Hands dominate the swing, lacks lower half, quick twitch hands and stay on level plane, barrel stays in the zone to create line drive contact.
Power: 91 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 95 mph. Plus-plus arm for age, short and loose out of over the top slot, played on target across.
Defense: Athletic actions, easy body control, hands play soft with fluid footwork, third base profile.
Run: 6.87 runner in the 60. Strong runner, gets to top end quickly
5. Keegan Knutson, Milton (WI), 2022 - South Carolina
Positional Profile: 3B/SS Top 10 prospect in Wisconsin's 2022 class.
Body: 5-foot-10, 150-pounds. Average frame, athletic build.
Hit: RHH. Balanced stance, leg lift stride, simple and subtle pre pitch. Flat path through contact, barrelstays in the zone, hits in rhythm, middle of the field approach.
Power: 87 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 87 mph. Short high 3/4 arm action, showed accurate across the diamond, with carry.
Defense: Athletic defender, profiles as 3B/2B, fluid footwork with above average hands and clean transfers.
Run: 7.31 runner in the 60.
Top 2023 Infielders
1. Alexander Alicea, St. Thomas More (WI), 2023
Positional Profile: SS/2B; Premium shortstop defender in the 2023 class.
Body: 5-foot-5, 125-pounds. Small compact frame, athletic quick twitch actions.
Hit: SH. Slightly open stance, more open from the left side, short stride and repeatable pre-pitch actions from both sides. Short and level swing path, showed feel for the barrel from both sides of the plate. Spray line drive hitter with barrel control.
Power: 77 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 86 mph. Athletic arm showed high ability to release on the move from multiple slots, short arm action with quick release, carries.
Defense: Soft hands and plus actions for age, glove plays out front with confidence, cushions the baseball to release. Feet are active and ranges well, athletic ability allows to make all the plays with relative ease.
Run: 6.93 runner in the 60. Advanced runner, short quick gait, gets out of the box quickly.
2. Aiden Schenk, Janesville Craig (WI), 2023
Positional Profile: 1B/OF
Body: 6-foot-0, 185-pounds. Durable build with overall strength.
Hit: LHH. Balanced stance, abrupt short stride, loads on time and stays balanced through swing. Above average bat speed, loose hands and short to the baseball, present bat strength.
Power: 82 mph exit velocity from the tee. Power potential bat.
Arm: LH. INF - 81 mph. OF - 84 mph. Short loose arm action, lively, athletic arm, high 3/4 slot, played accurate and carries well.
Defense: Athletic defender, showed well around the bag at first base, excellent feel with natural defensive abilities. In the outfield, profiles at a corner, showed similarly smooth footwork, clean actions.
Run: 7.56 runner in the 60.
3. Adam Switalski, Westosha Central (WI), 2023 - Indiana
Positional Profile: RHP/3B
Body: 6-foot-0, 155-pounds. Lean athlete.
Hit: RHH. Slightly open stance, short stride, hands stay in rhythm. Slightly uphill path, average bat speed, loose hands through contact.
Power: 81 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 88 mph. Live arm, short loose arm action, high 3/4 slot, carry across with minimal accuracy.
Defense: Feet setup to play through the baseball glove play left of center, out front, soft hands work through the baseball.
Run: 7.44 runner in the 60.
4. Chris Calico, West Salem (WI), 2023
Positional Profile: SS/2B
Body: 5-foot-8, 145-pounds. Athletic build.
Hit: RHH. Open stance, slight leg kick stride, hands load on time and in rhythm, maintains strong balance throughout. Confident approach, path works slightly uphill with above average bat speed, gap to gap approach, in rhythm hitter.
Power: 82 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 76 mph. Short over the top arm action.
Defense: Fluid actions, feet work athletically, presents glove late at times, rolls into position.

5. Boston Halloran, Franklin (WI), 2023
Positional Profile: 3B
Body: 5-foot-10, 150-pounds. Solid frame and build.
Hit: RHH. Weight loaded on back side, slightly open stance, dives to contact while hands load back. Long path works uphill, hits in rhythm, loose hands create bat speed.
Power: 82 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 82 mph. Short loose arm action, plays well on the move, flashes carry across, played efficiently.
Defense: Above average actions, reliable hands and defensive abilities, third base profile with body control.

Hit: RHH. Balanced stance, short lifted stride, on time. Short loose swing, aggressive hack with strong hands, above average bat speed that works in rhythm.
