Counsell’s excellent bat-to-ball skills were on display all weekend long at our PBR at The Rock Championships, and he looks like one of Wisconsin’s best uncommitted prospects. He’s always been able to spray line-drives to all fields effectively, and this past weekend he showed the ability to drive the ball with more authority, capitalizing on a couple of mistakes in the zone for extra-base hits. Counsell’s a well-rounded prospect, with sound middle-infield actions and a simple, on-the-barrel, right-handed swing.
At the workout portion of the Future Games, Counsell peppered the middle of the diamond with low-lying line drives. His right-handed swing is quiet and he repeats it well which helps find the barrel. On the infield he showed soft hands and was efficient throughout his round.
Positional Profile: SS/2B
Body: 5-9, 155-pounds. Thin, wiry frame.
Hit: RHH. Open stance with pre-pitch rhythm throughout, hands load back into a slight bat wrap, leg kick trigger. Simple swing with a quality approach at the plate, short path to contact. Line drive approach, feel to work around the yard. Top-of-the-order type, advanced feel to hit.
Power: 89.9 max exit velocity, averaged 78.2 mph. 265’ max distance.
Arm: RH. C - mph. INF - 81 mph. OF - mph. Short/quick arm circle, high 3/4 slot.
Defense: Active defender on the infield, plays with bounce throughout. Sure-handed defender, glove works out front, slight pack to release, plays through the baseball.
Run: 7.02 runner in the 60.
Positional Profile: SS/2B
Body: 5-foot-7, 120-pounds. Thin wiry frame.
Hit: RHH. Tall, high hands setup, balanced stance, short toe tap stride. Path is level, flat through contact, showed feel for the barrel.
Power: 87 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 74 mph. High 3/4 slot, arm played on target across the diamond, long arm action.
Defense: Confident clean hands, actions works through the baseball, showed ability to quickly transfer and release when on the move. Sure handed defender.
Run: 7.47 runner in the 60.
