2018 Western PA Summer Review

The summer 2018 West Virginia Showcase event schedule continued on July 11th with the Eastern Panhandle Showcase at Potomac State College. A number of interesting young prospects dotted the roster with complete analysis of all players in attendance provided below.

Top Prospects

Tristan Everett, 2019, Hampshire, SS/2B

Tristan EverettDefensively, hands are soft and confident in funneling from bottom up and out front. Everett showcases excellent footwork in attacking and playing through ball while gaining ground on throws. Hands and arm are quick in transfer and throws across the diamond. An accurate 83 mph arm was shown. Overall Everett showed makings of solid next level middle infield defender. Average foot speed of 7.25 in 60-yard dash was registered. 

Offensively, the 5-foot-8 145-pound, right-handed hitter initiates swing from open set up with stride to neutral.  He achieves solid separation through weight shift away from hands. Hip turn is aggressive and good leverage is achieved in staying behind baseball and rotating into a firm front side. Bat is on plane early and maintained late in hitting zone. An 81 mph bat exit velocity was recorded. Mechanics suggest development of next level gap to gap power with solid contact rate.

Cullen Horowicz, 2021, Jefferson, 3B/RHP

Cullen HorowiczDefensively, glove hand is soft and confident while working bottom up and out front. Feet are active to and through the baseball. Transfer is clean and throwing motion has length. Horowicz showcased 79 mph arm strength on throws across the diamond.

Offensively, the 6-foot-4 190-pound, right-handed hitter initiates swing from open set up with short, controlled stride to neutral. Separation is solid. Weight shift and hip turn are aggressive. Swing path is slightly uphill. Hands are loose and work directly in achieving substantial barrel whip. An advanced for age 86 mph bat exit velocity was registered. Overall, Horowicz shows early signs of developing into a solid next level offensive player.

On the mound, works out of mid 3/4 arm slot. Arm action is long and loose while demonstrating solid downhill plane consistent with 6-foot-4 frame. Delivery is moderate effort and there was some difficulty repeating from the wind up on this day. Fastball sat 81-82 mph demonstrating consistent arm side run. Curveball at 69 flashed good depth, 11/5 shape and was commanded. Changeup at 75-76 was thrown with good sell and fade while being inconsistently commanded. Developing arm quickness, athleticism and frame make Horowicz an arm to follow in the Class of 2021. .

Zac Rose, 2021, Jefferson, 1B/LHP

Zac RoseDefensively, hands are soft and feet work well around the bag. Shows commitment to working bottom up and out front. Transfer is clean and throwing motion has length. 6-foot-2 inch frame and left handedness play well at 1B. Rose registered 79 mph arm strength on throws across the diamond.

Offensively, the 6-foot-2 200-pound left-handed hitter initiates swing from wide, neutral set up with lift and replace stride. Excellent separation is achieved through rotating away from hands. There is front knee stiffness in landing as well as early hip opening lending to difficulty covering away. Hands are loose and there is solid leverage contributing to considerable barrel whip. Rose showed ability to get bat on plane early while repeatedly squaring ball to pull side during an impressive round of BP. Rose registered a 79 mph bat exit velocity and as very young player shows signs of developing into a middle of the order run producer.

On the mound te left-hander works out of a low 3/4 arm slot with rhythm and balance. Delivery is low effort and repeatable. Arm action is long and loose. Fastball at 77-80 flashes arm side run and sink. Curveball at 66-67 demonstrated 1/7 shape and moderate depth. Slider at 70-72 showed 1-8 sweeping break and moderate tilt. Changeup sat 71-73 while being thrown with good sell and demonstrating solid arm side fade. Rose showcased ability to command four pitch mix on this day. Overall frame, repeatable, low effort delivery and command make Rose arm to follow in Class of 2021.

Eli Hott, 2019, Hampshire, C/2B/RHP

Defensively as catcher glove hand is soft and quiet in receiving and framing. Hott presents soft, square wall with maintenance of  solid upper body angle in blocking. There is length to transfer and throw of 67 mph out of crouch. Recorded POP time best of 2.23.

At SS, actions are athletic with solid footwork present in working to the ball as well as in gaining ground on throws. Glove hand is soft and confident while funneling bottom up and out front. Showcased an accurate 79 mph arm on throws across the diamond.

Offensively, 5-foot-10 150-pound, right-handed hitter initiates swing from slightly open with short stride to neutral. Early hand leak reduces separation. Weight shift and hip turn are adequate. Bat path is flat and solid leverage is achieved. Barell feel was demonstrated with squaring of multiple balls during round of BP. A bat exit velocity of 77 mph was registered.

On the mound, the right-hander works out of a mid 3/4 arm slot showing ability to repeat moderate effort delivery. Stride is short and use of lower half is passive. Fastball sat 77-79 mph touching 80 with arm side run. Curveball at 67-68 had 11/5 shape and rolling action. Changeup was thrown with reasonable sell at 71-72 demonstrating intermittent arm side fade. Slider ws inconsistent but at best flashed 11/4 shape and moderate tilt at 74-75.

Dylan McCartney, 2019, Jefferson, C/RHP

Defensively, shows soft, quiet glove hand in framing and receiving. Showcases excellent lateral agility and range while maintaining a soft wall and solid trunk angle in blocking. Hands and feet are quick and transfer is clean on throws. There is length to arm stoke. 71 mph arm strength out of the crouch played to POP time best of 2.09

Offensively, the 5-foot-8 165-pound, right-handed-hitter initiates swing from slightly open set up with short, controlled stride to neutral. Weight shift is passive and there is subte reach with stride leg. Hip turn is aggressive. A passive back elbow in load contributes to reduced separation. Hands are slotted low. Balance is good, bat path is flat and there is solid barrel feel. A bat exit velocity of 69 mph was registered.

On the mound, the right-hander works out of a mid 3/4 arm slot showing ability to repeat moderate effort delivery. Fastball was true at 73-77 mph. Curveball sat sat 67-68 and was commanded with 11/4-5 shape and moderate depth. Changeup at 69-71 was thrown with reasonable sell and intermittent fade/sink.

Colin Sulser, 2019, Hampshire, RHP/1B

Defensively, Shows above average athleticism at 1B. Feet work well around the bag. Hands are soft in funnelling out front and bottom up.Transfer and throwing motion are clean and quick. Registered 79 mph arm strength on throws across the diamond. Skill set may allow versatility to play both infield corner positions.

Offensively, 6-foot 165-pound right-handed hitter initiates swing from slightly open set up with stride staying open. Separation, weight shift and hip turn are solid. There is intermittent compromised back side release. Hands are loose and work directly to the baseball. Bat is on plane early and late spending extended time in hitting zone. A bat exit velocity of 77 mph was registered,

On the mound, works out of a mid 3/4 arm slot with a repeatable, low effort delivery.  There is balance and rhythm. Front knee softness is present during back side drive. Fastball sat 79-80 mph touching 82 with arm side run. Slider at 72-74 showcased 11/4 shape and moderate tilt. Changeup at 72-74 was thrown with inconsistent command and slowing of the arm. Splitter sat 70-71 and was commanded with consistent downward action.

Ryan Thomas, 2019, Capital, 1B/3B

Defensively, hands and feet are adequate around the bag. Thomas funnels bottom up. There is a tendency to let ball get deep. Transfer is clean and throwing motion has length. Arm strength of 67 mph was registered on throws across the diamond.

Offensively, the 6-foot-2 175-pound left-handed hitter initiates swing from neutral with short stride staying neutral. There is reach with stride leg and associated passive weight shift. Separation is adequate and hip turn is aggressive. Back elbow leak in front of hands creates bat drag. A bat exit velocity of 79 mph was registered.

Blake Watts, 2019 Moorefield LHP/1B

Defensively, hands and feet are adequate around the bag. There is intermittent tendency to work top down. 6-foot-3 frame as left-handed thrower plays well at 1B.

Offensively, 6-foot-3 210 pound right-handed hitter initiates swing from slightly open set up with short stride to neutral. Hands are loose, quick and direct to the baseball. Separation is reduced by passive weight shift and hip turn. Watts gets and maintains bat on plane early and late in hitting zone. Barrel feel was present with consistent squaring of ball during round of BP. A bat exit velocity of 83 mph was registered. Hand speed suggests considerable untapped power potential in accordance with greater use of lower half.

On the mound, the left-hander works out of a mid 3/4 arm slot with a repeatable low effort delivery. He is able to effectively utilize his long frame to achieve solid downhill plane to his pitches. Fastball sat 76-77 mph and was commanded with consistent run and sink. Curveball at 66-68 mph showcased 1/7 shape with moderate depth. Changeup was thrown with adequate sell and consistent arm side fade. Watts demonstrated ability to command his secondary offerings to all quadrants.

Connor Gottholm, 2020, Spring MIlls, RHP/OF

Defensively is decisive in reads and routes. Gottholm consistently gets behind and plays through ball both in the air and on the ground. Registered arm strength of 75 mph on throws from the OF. 

Offensively,the 5-foot-11 145 pound, right-handed hitter initiates swing from open set up with stride to further open. Weight shift is adequate and hip turn is passive. Back elbow does not directly connect to trunk resulting in consistent the arm while having consistent arm side fade.reach. There is tendency to rotate into a soft front side. A bat exit velocity of 76 mph was registered.

On the mound, the right-hander works out of a mid 3/4 arm slot demonstrating adequate balance and rhythm. There is ability to repeat moderate effort delivery. Fastball was true at 74-75 mph. Curveball at 60 had 11/5 shape and rolling action. Changeup at 58-62 was thrown with subtle slowing of the arm while demonstrating consistent arm side fade.

Jacob Spearen, 2020, University, 2B/SS

Defensively, shows soft, confident hands in consistently funnelling from bottom up and out front. Spearen uses feet to create optimal hops and angles. Transfer is clean. Spearen would benefit from consistently gaining ground on throws across diamond and quickening arm stroke to allow arm strength to play up.

Offensively, the 5-foot-8 right-handed hitter initiates swing from open set up with stride to neutral. Separation is adequate. Weight shift and hip turn are aggressive. Bat path is flat and barrel feel was present in consistently squaring ball during round of BP. A bat exit velocity of 73 mph was registered.

Chase Anderson, 2020, Jefferson, 2B/OF

Defensively, actions are athletic with feet being active working to and through the ball. Hands are adequate with an intermittent tendency to work top down. Transfer is clean and throwing motion has length on throws of 68 mph across the diamond. Consistent with athleticism Anderson recorded a solid for age 60-yard dash time of 7.25.

Offensively, the 6-foot 145-pound left handed hitter initiates his swing from a slightly open set up with a short, controlled stride to neutral. Separation is reduced by passive weight shift. Hip turn is aggressive. Reduced weight shift and early front knee lock lend to slightly uphill swing path. Hands are loose and work directly to baseball achieving substantial barrel whip. Overall, Anderson is a very young player with considerable offensive upside in accordance with subtle mechanical changs. A bat exit velocity of 75 mph was recorded.
