2020 Grossmont utility player and Saint Mary’s commit Giovanni Giganti is listed at 5’ 11” 185 lbs and presents a stocky and athletic build. Defensively is listed as a shortstop and catcher, played the entire game at short and displayed a solid overall feel for the position. Showed limited range and lateral movement but displayed a fundamentally sound first step read on the ball. Arm strength is below average displaying full body effort to get the ball across the diamond. Throws from short were accurate across the diamond in part due to repeatable throwing mechanics. Best defensive tool is his versatility as his present and future tools could enable him to play second, third, shortstop and catcher at the next level. Offensively, sets up short and compact in the box, using his sturdy build to his advantage. Bat to ball swing path with limited barrel through the zone and a level contact point. Hips and upper body show dead pull approach which will need to be adjusted at the next level. Present tools and physical build could make him an interesting project behind the dish as the bat would play up. Ability to slot into three different infield spots presents him with versitialy and should help him carve out playing time at the next level.
