James Tronstein, HARVARD-WESTLAKE (CA), 2026 Stanford
Positional Profile: OF/SS Top of the order offensive profile with impact while showing high level athletic ability and an interesting versatile defensive profile to play up the middle.
Body: 5-11, 175-pounds. Medium sized height with emerging strength across and athletic frame with room to add.
Hit: RHH. Slightly wider base with bend in knees and small hip hinge. Hands are set deeper than rear shoulder at about same height with bat waggle to keep hands loose. Small load with a shift rearward into a short forward stride to reach launch. Hands are connected in the turn which stays taller in posture. Utilize a scissor kick in the drive with direct hand path and leverage through the zone. Balanced finish with rear shoulder drive. 74.2 mph bat speed with 16 G's of rotational acceleration.
Power: 101 max exit velocity, averaged 94.3 mph. 388' max distance. Intriguing max EV with a line drive based bat path generates line to line hard contact at high level with loft to the pull side. Power can play to middle/pull side. Hit with power profile.
Arm: RH. INF-84 mph. OF-91 mph. INF: Medium length path with looseness in the stroke and comfort throwing from the shoulder. Accurate thrower on dirt. OF: Longer path with strong present arm speed that has low carry out of the hands and accuracy.
Defense: INF: feet work with rhythm and body control. Plays with good angles and low hips. Hands are smooth showing consistency with two hands and feel to play one handed. OF: aggressive into the ball with confidence in his glove. Shows strong CF profile.
ATH: 6.61 runner in the 60. 1.55 and 3.64 in the 10 and 30 yard splits. Burst off the line with ability to get up to speed effectively while maintaining speed throughout. 29.70 max vertical.
Vizual Edge: 77.58 Edge Score
The 2024 Prep Baseball All American Game alum and 2023 Team California Future Game alum made a strong case for a return trip to Miami based on yet another loud performance in front of the Prep Baseball scouting staff. Checking in at 5'11 175 lbs. Tronstein showed his athletic ability and versatility throughout the workout portion by first running a Top 10 60 time at 6.61 with the third fastest 10 yard split at 1.55 and fourth fastest 30 yard split at 3.64 while his 29.7" vertical jump was the third best in attendance. During the defensive workout Tronstein showed off a 91 MPH OF arm velocity with carry and accuracy before coming on the INF dirt to showcase smooth hands, quick feet and a smooth accurate 84 MPH arm. But, the nickname Tronny Barrels was on display again when he consistently hammered the baseball over two rounds of batting practice reaching a max exit velocity of 100.7 MPH while averaging 94.3 MPH. His underlying batted ball data with 81% hard hit rate, 68% sweet spot rate, 387' max distance and 82% fly ball/line drive rate were amongst the best of any player in attendance. His offensive profile played in game at a high level yet again as Tronstein rocketed a pair of base hits in game both at 94 MPH one to RCF on a CB he kept his hands back on before turning around a FB later in the game to LCF and lined out to SS in his third trip to the dish while also stealing a base in game.
James Tronstein, HARVARD-WESTLAKE (CA), 2026 Stanford
Positional Profile: OF/SS Intriguing RH hitter who shows polish with impact and an up the middle defensive profile
Body: 5-11, 165-pounds. Medium athletic frame with wiry present strength to it.
Hit: RHH. Even slighlty wider stance with small knee bend and minimal hip hinge. Hands are set higher than shoulder height about the same as ear above the rear shoulder with a higher back elbow and bat waggle with his hands. Small stride forward into launch position with a barrel tip and minimal hand movement. Showed natural feel to be on time to launch with balance. The lower 1/2 generates torque with a fast turn and uses his upper body well to finish the swing while keeping his hands back. The bat speed is present with a direct path that generates hard contact consistently with leverage that plays to the middle and pull side of the field. It's a polished natural approach to hitting with impressive barrel feel.
Power: 105 max exit velocity, averaged 94.6 mph. 393' max distance. The swing creates leverage that allows him to drive the ball hard on a line and in the air without having to work steep uphill to create lift. He shows impressive raw power with room to continue adding more while being able to get to hard contact consistently. Polished hit tool with impactful power potential. High ceiling offensive profile.
Arm: RH. INF-80 mph. OF-93 mph. Short arm stroke in the OF with arm speed and low carry to his throws. Uses his body well to make the arm strength show CF/RF ability. Arm is quick and compact on the INF with ability to work from different slots and accuracy on the dirt.
Defense: Easy mover who shows range and comfort in the OF while adding athleticism/body control to be impact OF defender. Plays low with smooth feet and rhythm on the INF dirt. More comfortable playing 2 handed, but can go 1 handed. Consistently clean quick transfer. Up the middle INF/OF defensive profile.
ATH: 6.64 runner in the 60. 1.66 and 3.74 in the 10 and 30 yard splits. Explosive off the line while building speed quickly with ability to maintain throughout. 32.70 max vertical.
2022 FUTURE GAMES: Only a 2026 grad, and more than two years younger than some of the participants, Tronstein hardly looked intimidated, but rather mirrored the elite talent present, and surpassed it in most instances. The 5-foot-10, 160-pound shortstop, who is equally as comfortable in the outfield, is an elite athlete who already produced a graceful 6.8 60-yard dash time that carries over to a quick first step on the bases and on the infield. Working side to side at shortstop with confident hands, his glove-to-hand ability stands out along with a strong arm with a quick release. The right-handed stroke is loose and athletic with the hands working fluidly down and back before triggering big bat speed with present intent to do damage. The intent, done with some controlled aggression, should get a boost of power as the frame continues filling out, but Tronstein more than declared himself as a player to know in prep scene’s newest high school class.
James Tronstein, Harvard-Westlake (CA), 2026
Positional Profile: INF/OF
Physical: 5-10, 150-pounds; Lean and athletic with some present strength throughout. 6.8 runner in the 60.
Offensively: RHH. Even setup, with feet just outside his shoulders; bat positioned at a 45 degree angle. Short take back with the hands with a toe-tap for timing. Stays behind the ball while showing a strong lower half. Showed a compact swing path with one-handed finish. More line drives than flyballs and groundballs with a peak exit velocity of 95 MPH via Trackman. Advanced hitter. Natural rhythm in swing. Present bat speed. Worked gap-to-gap with LDs throughout his round. Barrel stays in the zone a long time. Projectable power.
Defensively: INF - 81 MPH. OF - 84 MPH. Showed solid actions from both spots. In the INF showed light feet with heel-toe actions and soft hands. Fluid exchange. Above average arm strength. Changed up arm slot when needed. Aggressive feet in the OF coming in hard with his glove out front while creating good momentum to get off strong throws. Showing early ability to play both positions well in HS.
