1/5/19 - SoCal Preseason All-State - 6-foot-1, 200-pounds, large frame with a strong lower half with little physical projection remaining. Batting from the right side, Welch has a nice line drive swing. Shows present power, registered 88 mph exit velo off the tee. Has good bat speed, to go along with quick hands. Good barrel control with good extension in his swing. Defensively, Welch has a good wide base and receives the ball well. His throwing motion can get long causing his throws to not have as much carry. Made accurate throws around the base. Pop times ranged from 2.02-2.22. Welch has a power bat to go along with solid defensive skills.
8/1/18 - Welch is a big bodied, physical catcher with a muscular lower half and projectable strength in the upper half. Welch starts with even, neutral stance and uses a rocking motion to move the weight to his back leg before exploding into the ball. He shows present power to the pull side and the ability to hit line drives the other way from an easy stroke. Keeps his barrel in a consistent plane through the hitting zone with quick hands. Defensively he presents a good target and sticks it. Stays level with a steady head. Has a bit of a recoil and lands on the balls of his feet before throwing. The arm is strong and throws have some carry. Accuracy was a tick inconsistent as one ball sailed on him.
8/1/18 - Six-foot-1, 190-pounds, large frame with a thick, strong lower half, sloped shoulders, and strength through the upper half. Stays tall on the backside before driving down the mound with a high leg lift trigger. Uses a short arc in the back before releasing from a ¾ arm slot and a bit of a stabbing throwing motion. Fastball has some tilting action with slight armside run on a downhill plane. Commands the fastball well and spots it at knee level. Curveball shows 11/5 shape with gradual break. Changeup is straight on a downhill plane.
