10/13/19

PBR N CA Top Prospect Game - Compactly built at 5-foot-10 170-pounds, with strength in lower body, good build to play up the middle. Versatile defender capable of playing anywhere in the infield, arm strength suggests 2nd base may be the best spot (81 mph) in the future but has clean and skilled footwork that plays at SS. Raw footspeed (7.36 60-yard) is an area to improve though his instincts and angles to the baseball on defense allow his range to play above the footspeed. Offensively brings some presence into the box and in positive counts he's capable of doing damage (88 mph exit velo off tee), as evidenced by a ringing double to LF. In two-strike counts showed a tenacious approach and ability to spoil quality pitcher's pitches. Confident player with personality that draws in teammates.

Max FB 82, FB 78-82, SL 70-72, CHG 71
Strong and compactly built 5-foot-10, 170-pound body. Competitive in all he does on the field, that is no different on the mound. Simple delivery, strong lift, very short backside which is that of a middle infielder, quick arm and minimal lower body usage in the delivery. The 82 mph is generated just about entirely with his arm. Pounds the strike zone and occasionally gets some arm side action on the fastball that plays up a little better than the velocity. Slider has some sweeping action and when release point is dialed in the FB/SL can play well off of each other. Strength and arm speed, along with an understanding/feel of the game, would give him chance to develop a beyond HS level pitcher, if he chose that route.

3/26/19

Uncommitted as of this report; vs Christian Brothers; He's a compactly built player with athleticism and he does have some tools that do translate to catcher, which is a position his team didn't have and he's stepped in to accept that challenge. More on that later in the report. Regardless of his position on the field, it's his hitting ability that GETS him on the field. The more I watched his swing type/approach during this game the more Khris Davis came to mind. He has strong hands and can make impactful barrel contact, particularly on fastballs. Smith finishes his swing with a good top hand finish and strength. Drove a fastball through centerfield in first at-bat for a double (cleared loaded bases). Got a little greedy in his last at-bat and didn't cut down the swing in a 2-strike count (K on CB). The aggressiveness and intent to hit it hard each at-bat was impressive. Smith also controlled the tempo in each of his at-bats and noting his age, that was impressive. Did show some tendency to flinch a bit on curveballs. Given the challenge of catching a pitcher like Britton (stuff moves everywhere) and not having a ton of catching experience, it wasn't an easy day behind the plate for him but he never gave in or showed anything but great effort and attitude. He's got the foot quickness and agility and quick arm but struggled with technique to block (particularly a plus breaking ball) and receive pitches out of the zone. Simply was playing the position by utilizing his athleticism. The best pop throw was 2.17. Given time and coaching he could handle this position.

8/25/18

PBR N CA Underclass Games - 5-foot-9, 155-pounds, compact and athletic middle infield type body, strong with some nice life in his actions. Aggressive player with a good look in his eyes. Offensively has talent and the set-up is good, while using his lower body well in the swing. There is a hint of some pop that comes from his well above average hand speed and use of the lower body but the loft in the swing plane doesn’t really complement his present size and strength. Maybe someday, because the hands are fast and he can work inside the ball with gap and opposite field extra base potential. Defensively displayed soft hands and solid arm that should continue to tick up over the next couple of years. Footwork could quiet down and be more efficient as he approaches the ball. Feet are light and with hands and arm he has the talents to be an above average middle infielder, likely at 2nd base. Also pitched and competed well. Fastball velocity gave better glimpse of his raw arm strength. High-3/4 slot, quick arm, athletic delivery with good direction. Works quickly. Fastball had some sinking action, good spin on the curveball, spiked the change-up. Should pitch as a high school player and eventually play only a position at some point down the road.
