9.27.15 - Verbally committed to the University of Minnesota.

6.18.15 - Lean loose athletic frame, 6-foot-2, 185-pound left-handed hitting outfield/infielder. Hits from a tall setup, slightly open, short stride, lower half works well, maintains good balance. Loose hands, easy bat speed, athletic hitter. Creates occasional lift, 89 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively shows the ability to play multiple positions, arm action is loose, high ¾ slot, shows accuracy and athleticism in arm, can play from different slots when on the move, 87 mph from the outfield, 80 mph across the infield. Footwork is athletic and shows athletic actions, looks to be best suited in the outfield, possible third base projection. 7.08 runner in the 60.

4.8.15 - Lanky and athletic 6-foot-2, 180-pound left-handed hitting shortstop impressed at the plate. In a tough lefty-on-lefty matchup against Mettetal, Wassel found the barrel in all three of his at bats. Slightly open setup, short stride, turns front foot in to load hips, hands load up and back, creates angle with barrel. Fluid left-handed stroke, hits to all fields. First line drive a double to left field (misplayed by left fielder who started in on it). Lined out to right on an 82 mph fastball in second at bat. Lined to left again for a single in his third at bat. Defensively, impressed it pregame with soft hands, longer arm action, but looked more natural/relaxed at short than in the past. Size/frame could necessitate a move to third or the outfield as he puts on weight. Could be a 6-foot-3, 225-pound type guy in a few short years. Wassel is ranked No. 32 in Illinois’ 2016 class, and is a premium left-handed bat still on the market with a plus frame.

2.15.15 - Raw tool set that projects well, frame is lean and athletic, 6-foot-2, 180-pounds, showed the ability to play multiple positions on the field, showed most natural actions in the outfield. Left-handed hitter, open stance, smooth loading action, short stride, athletic setup. Took a great round of BP, showed bat speed and ability to drive the baseball to both gaps. 88 mph exit velocity from the tee. In the outfield moved well through the baseball, arm played well with accuracy, 86 mph from the outfield. Athletic feet, 7.07 runner in the 60. On the infield, showed athletic actions to make routine plays, versatile defender, projects better in the outfield, arm played at 78 mph across the diamond. Wassel shows a high aptitude for the bat in BP, if it carries to the field his bat should be one of the more coveted left handed hitters in the class.

6/19/14 - Long lanky frame, highly projectable left handed hitting athlete, 6-foot-2, 175-pounds. Offensively hits from a balanced setup, short stride, smooth loading action with slight bat wrap load, lower half works, strong balance throughout. Advanced bat speed, athletic hands, creates whip through the zone, 95 mph exit velocity from the tee. Athletic hitter, hits with rhythm and looseness. Defensively showed a high level of athleticism to play multiple positions on the field, took it in the outfield and at shortstop. Arm plays with a short loose action, over the top slot, 86 mph from the outfield, 79 mph across the diamond, arm showed athleticism to play on the move on the infield. Showed the ability to play in stride and through the baseball in the outfield, showed body control on the infield. Likely to project at third base or a corner outfield spot.

4/8/14 - Ranked No. 16 in Illinois’ 2016 class. Highly athletic, projectable frame, 6-foot-2, 175 pounds. Left-handed hitter, tall, relaxed setup, looseness in swing, quick-twitch athlete with bat speed. In BP prior to game, showed easy, balanced swing, excellent extension after contact, barrel whip through the zone. Has potential to be a high-end left-handed bat. In game, struck out twice in first two at-bats, then delivered two sacrifice flies to left field. The final one came in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded. We’re told he’s good at shortstop, but will likely not play the position because of Derr. With that said, he looks like a natural in the outfield. Moves extremely well, fluid gait, natural outfield arm action, accurate on-line throws in pregame.

2/29/20: The 6-foot-2, 205 pound left-handed hitting third baseman raked his way through the tournament with a .538 average, one home run and four RBI. He showed above-average bat speed with some lift to his swing. He’s developed legit pop and a much better plan at the plate this year vs. last. At the hot corner he showed an above-average arm with below-average glovework and fringe range. He was named to the Cambria College Classic All-Tournament team and could jump into the second half of Day Two this June. (Seifert)
