Drafted in the 31st round by the Twins. ... Got his release from Arizona State... First-team All-State selection ... A late season call-up as a freshman, Payton immediately made his all-around abilities known when he made several big plays during the Mustangs state quarterfinal run. And each time he takes the field, Payton continues to impress. As a junior last spring, the left-handed hitting Payton was the driving force behind St. Ritas Class 4A runner-up finish. Payton, whos arguably the best defensive outfielder in the state, finished with 12 homers, 10 doubles and 4 triples. He scored an amazing 55 runs, drove in 42 and batted .438 with a .979 slugging percentage and a .590 on-base percentage. He walked 33 times, stole 11 bases and went 2-1 with 2 saves on the mound. Payton, who earned the Chicago Sun-Times Player of the Year honors, was back at it again in the summer, helping lead the Mustangs to the IHSBCA summer state championship.
