Northeastern commit. 6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed pitcher sat 87-89 from a high 3/4 arm slot with a repeatable, balanced delivery that begins with a controlled side rocker step. Fastball is relatively flat, but changeup thrown with fastball arm speed has some arm-side run. Curveball at 70-71 shows tight 11/5 rotation with above average depth. Athletic frame has room to add additional strength with incremental velocity gains likely.
Big Apple Preview (October 14, 2018)
More physical frame then we saw in June for the RHP/INF that ran a soft surface 60 at 7.74. Offensively- Open stance; barrel tip back over shoulder with a flat start that lifts during timing. Covers the zone well with juice to both gaps; stays in the zone with an elevated 2-handed finish. Middle of the order run producer mindset; handle all of his live at-bats with ease on the day. Defensively- Listed as SS but physical build, foot speed, arm strength and offensive potential may lead him him to 3B over the long term. Hands work out in front, soft with receiving and clean transfer; high, over-the-top release point. Pitching- Pounded the zone to his glove side with his FB which sat 84-85 MPH. Simple, repeatable delivery with a standard 3/4 arm slot. CB featured late action with 12-6 shape. Feel for a same plane change up. Can throw all 3 pitches for strikes and also expand when need be.
Good frame at 6-foot-0, 165-pounds. Active footwork transitioning into throw, smooth actions. 84 mph arm strength. Quick hands. In the box, bat path has slight lift, 86 mph exit velo. Power to gaps projection.
Lean athletic build with with loose arm action. Smooth mechanics with good lower body drive. Mid ¾ release point, fastball sat 79-81 MPH and peaked at 83 MPH. Shows control with curveball spotting well in zone with a sharp cross plate break sitting 65-67 MPH. Change up is consistent with good down breaking action sitting 70-75 MPH.
Preseason - Downstate (February 21, 2018)
At the play he uses a narrow stance slightly Open, hands relaxed at the shoulder height with a bat waggle. Slight stride back to even on the pitch, no load, direct to the ball on a uphill swing plane, full extension out in front with 83 mph exit velocity, definite signs of more in the tank. Defensively, breaks down as he charges the ball, keeps his body behind his throws maximizing Full Potential from a high 3/4 release 84 mph arm strength with plenty of carry to his target. He also worked out from the middle infield position, showing an active lower half, glove fields away from body, fluid transfer, arm strength of 80 mph across the diamond. Overall, one of the finer looking prospects in the 2020 class we've seen this February.
ENY All-Star Games (September 17, 2017)
Yost stands a lean 5-foot-10, 150-pounds with signs of more weight gains to come. Offensively- At the plate he uses a slightly open stance, loose hands. On the pitch he uses a small stride back to even, front hips start to drive forward before he loads his hands. Very short and compact, quick to the ball, barrel stays mostly level through contact with full extension. 83 MPH exit velocity. Defensively- Uses proper technique in his mechanics, mostly smooth with clean hands, at times fields the ball too deep in his stance, arm is easy in the upper 70's with accuracy to the bag, more velocity to come. Currently projects at 2B. Pitching- On the mound is where he really caught our attention. Slim slender build with simple mechanics to his delivery, high knee lift with fluid pace. Long arm-action with hand dipping below belt-height, long front stride using hip separation, releases from a power 3/4 slot with a fastball peaking 81 MPH with downhill action. Shows confidence with his curveball, throws in all counts with late 10/5 shape. Full player to keep an eye on over the next three years.
Winter Open (February 26, 2017)
Yost stands in at 5-foot-7, 135-pounds with an athletic frame. Ran a 7.69 – 60. Offensively- Righty sets up in an open stance with his feet just outside shoulder width. Shows a slight knee bend with an upright torso holding this hands in front of the back shoulder using little pre-pitch bat movement. On pitch his trigger is a stride forward squaring up with the pitcher while his hands move back and up slightly to get into his hitting position. Has a good lower body rotation getting whole frame involved in the swing. Good hands to the hitting zone with a level bat path throughout into a high two handed finish; stays behind the top of the zone strike. Line drive results. Recorded an exit velocity of 76 MPH. Defensively- Moves well to the baseball with good footwork. Fielding mechanics are smooth with a good funnel and separation. Needs to get the ball in the throwing position sooner rather than hold it mid-hip level. Moves well left/right and in on the run. Recorded a positional arm velocity of 72 MPH; stays through his throws. Pitching- Sets up in the middle of the rubber slightly open. Belt high knee drive, breaking down on the back side well before driving to his target. Good separation and in correct throwing position when front foot strikes. Has a high ¾ release point with a strong follow through. Fastball has arm side run and is consistent 74-75 MPH. Curveball has 12/6 action with early break; will get more consistent with more reps. Curveball was 57-59 MPH. Changeup has good sink arm side and was consistent 63-64 MPH.
