9/10/19

A projectable athlete with versatile skill set, Vetetoe posted a great summer in 2019.  A hybrid LHH catcher/outfielder showed great speed tool, bat speed, and arm strength. Hit a towering homerun at Top Prospect Games in June, then followed up with strong performance at PBR Future Games (2 for 5 | 3 SB | 3 R | 2 RBIs).  Also pitched a scoreless inning, topping at 87.  The #2 uncommitted prospect rose from 23 to 13 (+10).

The 6-foot-1, 181-pound Vetetoe fulfilled various roles for Team Tennessee, seeing time at catcher, outfield, and on the mound.  A natural athlete w/ great tool set moved from behind the dish to close Game 2 vs Missouri.  Fastball sat 84-86, touching 87 (Max Spin: 2017 AVG: 1937) while loading up the strike zone.  Vetetoe showed two good off speed in 12/6 curveball at 67-69 (CB Max Spin: 2275 AVG: 2247) w/ good depth and changeup at 80-81 w/ some sink action.  Profile projects as position player, but showed great pitchability and sound three pitch mix.

The 6-foot-1, 181-pound lefty-swinging catcher/outfielder showed he could do a lot of different things throughout the weekend.  During showcase day, Vetetoe logged the 3rd best 60 time for Team Tennessee, as well as top C Velo and tied for top OF Velo.  In game action, Vetetoe went 2 for 5 at the plate (2 1B/ 1 BB) w/ 3 quality at bats in 6 plate appearances. He also had 3 SB, 3 runs scored, and 2 RBIs.  A smooth swing from the left side w/ explosive bat speed leading to run production. Well-rounded game w/ good arm, speed, hit, and power.  Also pitched scoreless inning on Day 2 (FB:84-86, T87). Plans to focus on catching development this fall.  Profile projects as all-around impact player w/ multiple tools and sweet lefty swing.

6-foot-1, 181-pound, Tall, athletic frame w/ fast twitch well-proportioned lean strength.  Offensively setup is slightly open with a majority of weight on backside w/ a shoulder high handset. Moves to the ball with a quick balanced stride and very little hand movement.  Generates bat speed our front very easily.  Barrel stays in the zone for a long time.  All fields approach w/ lot of backspin.  Pull side power is there and will continue to develop as he continues to fill out his frame. Has tendency to dominate the swing with his right hand (common for RH throwers) could possibly lose adjustability against high velocity. Defensively, this guy is an athlete, projects as a quality utility player. Very good runner (6.62) showed in how he moved in the OF. Showed a strong arm both behind the plate and in the outfield with very projectable carry and good accuracy. Sets a good target behind the plate and shows ability to stick the baseball.

10/14/18 - Home-1st: 4.56, Pop Time: 2.09-2.15, Position Velocity:  C-73, Exit Velocity: 84
6-foot-1, 175-pound, LHH picked up a hit and walk in game while showing off his super projectable frame and tools.  Tall, athletic frame w/ high-waist, well-proportioned lean strength.  Super projectable, has just scratched the surface of his frame potential.  Offensively, hits w/ a slightly open, slightly crouched stance w/ short hand rhythm into short stride to slightly open and short hand load.  Generates bat speed through the zone, flashes whip.  Barrel stays in the zone for a long time.  All fields approach w/ lot of line drives.  Learning to unlock his power, get lower half through the baseball consistently.  Quiet, repeatable swing.  Projectable all fields power as begins to fill out his frame.  Defensively, presents a big target w/ open glove.  Needs to set a lower target, get deeper into his crouch.  Target is currently set nearly waist high, making it difficult to get under the low pitches and steal the strikes.  Athletic defender behind the plate.  Some stabbiness as a receiver, mostly due to the high target and trying to beat the low pitch to the spot.  Shows ability to box the baseball.  As a thrower, shows projectable carry to target arm strength, which helps him pitch into the mid 80’s, w/ short release, solid footwork.

10/14/18 - Max FB: 83, FB: 81-83, CB: 64-68, CH: 76
6-foot-1, 175-pound, RHP got the day going, striking out 1 and generating 2 swing and misses on 7 swings against him, but likely projects best behind the plate.  Tall, athletic frame w/ high-waist, well-proportioned lean strength.  Super projectable, has just scratched the surface of his frame potential.  Pitches from the stretch only into H ¾ to ¾ release from the first base side of the rubber.  Glove tap and go w/ some effort in the throw.  Super quick arm.  Downhill plane w/ angle.  Straight FB showed occasional short arm-side run to his arm-side corner, occasional short cut to his glove-side corner.  Flashes sinking life when located down in the zone.  Big downer CB w/ proper shape and rotation.  Flashes tightness w/ late bite.  Straight CH.  Around the zone, would have the occasional big misfires.  Projects to command.

6/12/18 - Max FB: 84, FB: 81-83, Avg FB: 81.72, CB: 66-67
6-foot-1, 173-pound, RHP showed intriguing stuff w/ developing feel.  Medium, athletic frame w/ long limbs, some present strength, super projectable.  Pitches from the stretch only from the first base side of the rubber into over the top release.  Short, compact delivery, repeatable.  Some late head violence.  Downhill plane.  Straight FB shows occasional cut.  Big downer CB shows proper shape and rotation, comes up out of hand.  Late bite.  Sprayed the zone w/ FB’s on this day, nerves may have gotten to him a little bit.  Repeatable delivery, projects to command.

6/12/18 - Home-1st: 4.72, Pop Time: 2.16-2.22, Position Velocity:  C-76, Exit Velocity: 84
6-foot-1, 173-pound, LHH showed intriguing bat speed through the zone w/ super projectable frame.  Medium, athletic frame w/ long limbs, some present strength, super projectable.  Offensively, hits w/ a straight on, slightly crouched stance w/ short hand rhythm into stride to slightly open and proper load.  Generates bat speed through the zone w/ some natural loft.  Up the middle to pull oriented approach w/ lot of line drives when right.  Struggled w/ timing and breaking balls against advanced pitching, tools to hit as he matures.  Projects to hit for average w/ projectable power to all fields.  Defensively, presents solid target, though he can hope his glove earlier.  Gets a bit narrow in his setup, can widen his stance to improve his flexibility.  Advanced receiver, does not take a glove rest, understands how to frame the baseball.  Will take a big step forward when he begins to set-up a target below the hitter’s knees to steal more strikes.  Moves well behind the plate w/ ability to box the baseball.  As a thrower, shows projectable above average arm strength offensively w/ slight cocking action in release.  Developing consistent accuracy, projects to average with more reps behind the plate.
