2021 MLB DraftBinelas was a freshman sensation for the Cardinals, hitting .291/.383/.612 with 14 home runs, but played in just two games in the shortened season and got off to a rough start in 2021. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound power hitter salvaged a solid year, finishing at .256/.348/.621 with 19 home runs, though he may now be on the outside of the first round looking in. He has a balanced set-up and looked to gain comfort in the box as the season wore on. With big strength in his wrists, forearm and core, Binelas can hit the ball hard and far. Defensively, he has plenty of arm strength for the hot corner, but is stiff and tentative with his actions and would be a better fit at first base.

3/15/21

Off to a .120 start coming into this series, the 6-foot-3, 225-pound power-hitting first baseman looked comfortable in the batter’s box against Boston College. He was balanced in his setup and looked to be seeing the ball well. However, the results were just two hits in ten at-bats with a pair of walks. On the bright side those two hits were a homer and a double and he finished the three-game series with five RBI. Binelas experienced similar early season struggles as a freshman in 2019 before finishing with a .291/.383/.612 slash. Against BC he had the look of a guy who is about to bust loose. With Superman-like strength in his wrists, forearms and core, Binelas can hit them hard and far. His long ball on Saturday was a line drive bolt that left the yard in a hurry. Defensively, he saw time at both first and third base. He looks limited positionally to first base, not because of arm strength, which he has plenty (near plus arm with four-seam, on-line carry across the infield), but because of stiff, tentative actions at the hot corner. It’s simply not a natural place for him. Moving across the diamond to first base will decrease his draft value, but ultimately his production at the plate will determine where he is selected. His upside is the bottom third of the first round, a similar spot for past ACC sluggers like Aaron Sabato (North Carolina), 27th overall in 2020, Michael Busch (North Carolina), 31st overall in 2019, Seth Beer (Clemson), 28th overall in 2018 and Will Craig (Wake Forest), 22nd overall in 2016.

8/15/20

One of the top prospects in the country for the 2021 draft, Binelas missed most of the 2020 spring season after undergoing hamate surgery on February 18. The 6-foot-3, 210 pound third baseman was about to return to the lineup when the season was cancelled. When healthy, Binelas boasts big tools, especially power. He blossomed as a true freshman in 2019 for the Cardinals slashing .291/.383/.612 with 14 home runs. There is some swing/miss to his game (27 walks vs 48 strikeouts in 206 at-bats) and he profiles as a power over hit type of offensive player at the pro level. Defensively, he is a work in progress at the hot corner and will need to work hard to stay there. He will show a plus arm with fair throwing accuracy. He runs with a power stride and moves well for his size. His power potential and offensive abilities would also profile him to either first base or right field in the future.

3/10/20: Ranked No. 7 in our 2021 draft-eligible class, Binelas is recovering from recent hamate surgery. He fielded ground balls during BP and took light swings over the weekend at Wake Forest. He is expected to return within two weeks, maybe earlier as defensive replacement similar to the comeback plan teammate Dunn is undergoing at this time. (Seifert)

2/14/20: One of the top prospects in the country for the 2021 draft, Binelas is currently out of the lineup after undergoing hamate surgery on February 18, but is likely to return this season.

7/1/19: Possessing big tools as a prep prospect, Binelas blossomed as a true freshman this spring for the Cardinal slashing .291/.383/.612 with 14 home runs. Defensively, he is a work in progress at the hot corner and will need to work hard to stay there. Showed a plus arm with fair throwing accuracy. His power potential and offensive abilities would also profile him to either 1B or RF in the future. Runs with a power stride and moves really well for his size. During the Trials, he played mostly defense and did not see much action at plate after experiencing some hand/wrist discomfort, affecting his swing. With continued improvement and performance, Binales is a potential Day One pick in 2021.
