6.4 Underclass Games at SLU: Pitchers Analysis

On June 4, Prep Baseball Report-Missouri held the Underclass Games at Saint Louis University.  We have taken a look a the infielders, outfielders and catchers.  Today we take a look at the pitchers, quite possibly the portion of the day with the most talent.  This report takes in to consideration their pitching performance only. 

Trey McDaniel  (Greenville, RHP, 2017)
McDaniel is a 5-foot-11 175-pound RHP.  He throws from a ¾ arm slot.  His fastball has late run/sink and is 79-82 MPH. McDaniel's curveball has a late, 12/6 break and was clocked at 64-67 MPH. He showed a good slider late cut at 74-75 MPH and a change at 72 MPH. He displayed above average command.

Jack Riney (Lafayette, LHP, 2017)
Riney is a strong, projectable 6-foot-3, 190-pound LHP. He throws from a high 3/4 arm slot and regular effort. His shoulders stay level throughout his delivery. Riney's fastball ranged from 75-78 MPH. He has a curveball with 11/5 shape and slows his arm a little. The curveball came in between 60-62 MPH. His change-up was clocked at 58 MPH.

Brady McAfee (Marquette, LHP, 2017)
McAfee is a projectable 6-foot-1, 165-pound LHP. He pitched a scoreless, no-hit inning. He comes from a high 3/4 arm slot with quick arm speed. Brady's arm action is loose and throws with easy effort. He stays in-line nicely and has a smooth delivery. His fastball velo ranged from 76-80 MPH. McAfee throws a slurve with 11/5 direction and a velo range of 62-65 MPH. He also displayed a change-up at 76 MPH.

Dalton Hill (Lee’s Summit, RHP, 2017)
Hill is an athletic, projectable 6-foot-2, 170-pound RHP. He throws from a high ¾ slot with loose free arm action. Dalton has smooth rhythm and keeps his shoulders level through the pitch. He is a strike-thrower. His fastball was clocked at 77-80 mph.  He also has a sharp 11-5 curveball that was clocked at 66-67 mph.  Hill also showed a 69-72 change-up that was near fastball arm speed.

James River Wright (Bucklin, RHP, 2017)
Wright is a strong 5-foot-11,170-pound RHP with an over-the-top arm angle. He has loose arm action with controlled/smooth mechanics. James throws with easy effort and keeps his shoulders level through the pitch. His finish is a little towards first base. His fastball ranged from 80-83 MPH. Wright's curveball is a sharp 12/6 breaker at 70-72 MPH. His change-up is near fastball arm speed and ranges from 68-69 MPH

Douglas Payne (Cuba, RHP, 2017)
Payne is a 5-foot-8, 140-pound RHP. He keeps progressing and is developing into a very good pitcher. He has a loose, easy effort arm action, with a ¾ arm slot.  Payne showed feel and command for three pitches in the zone.  His fastball showed life a late run and ranged from 77-80 MPH. Payne's curveball  was at 65-71 MPH.  It has a 12/6 shape with a late, sharp break.  He throws his change at near fastball arm speed at 73-74 MPH. He pitched 2 very solid innings.

Jacob Davis (Windsor, RHP, 2017)
Davis is a 5-foot-11, 150-pound RHP. He throws from a high 3/4 arm slot with good run on his fastballs. His fastball velo ranged from 71-73 MPH. He showed a curveball that had 11/5 shape at 63-64 MPH. Jacob's change-up was thrown at near fastball arm speed and clocked at 62-63 MPH. He also displayed a knuckleball at 64 MPH.

Jake Evans (Park Hill South, RHP, 2017)
Evans is an athletic 6-foot-1, 165-pound RHP. He throws from a high 3/4 arm slot and has good run on his fastball. His fastball velo ranged from 75-77 MPH. His curveball has an 11-to-5 shape with a 65-69 MPH range. Evans' change-up came in at 62-64 MPH.

Harry Hegeman (MICDS, LHP, 2017)
Hegeman is a 5-foot-7, 140-pound LHP with good mound presence. He worked a quick 1-2-3 inning. Harry throws from a high 3/4 arm slot with free quick arm action. His fastball velocity ranged from 72-75 MPH with good sink. Hegeman's curveball ranged from 66-67 MPH and changeup was at 68 MPH. He also displayed a slider from 65-69 MPH.

Michael Hojnacki (Marquette, RHP, 2017)
Hojnacki is a lanky, projectable 6-foot, 145-pound RHP. He throws from an over-the-top arm slot. He gets some uphill tilt to his shoulders just before release. Hojnacki has long arm action and a bit of a wrap when he reaches back. Michael's fastball was clocked between 78-82 MPH. His curveball has a sharp 12/6 break and ranges from 70-72 MPH. He throws a good down angle change-up at 73 MPH.

Ben Holsclaw (Francis Howell, LHP, 2017)
Holsclaw is a lanky 6-foot-1, 144-pound LHP. He throws from a high 3/4 arm slot with good sink on his fastball. His fastball velocity ranged from 72-76 MPH. Ben's curveball has 11/5 shape and was clocked at 59-60 MPH. He throws his change-up at near fastball arm speed and hit 58 MPH.

Connor Morehouse (Park Hill, RHP, 2017)
Morehouse is a 5-foot-10, 190-pound RHP with an over the top delivery. He displayed good down angle with loose arm action and easy effort. His fastball ranged from 78-81 MPH. Morehouse threw a curveball that was near fastball arm speed and ranged from 65-69 MPH. He also throws a changeup at 78-79 MPH. 

Mason Mitchell (Marquette, LHP, 2017)
Mitchell is a 5-foot-11, 170-pound LHP with a 3/4 delivery. He showed good arm action with smooth rythm and regular effort. He stays in line with all pitches. His fastball ranged from 66-71 MPH. Mitchell's curveball ranged from 59-61 MPH and has 11/5 movement. He throws a changeup at near fastball arm speed and stayed at 69 MPH.

Tyler Pauley (Marquette, RHP, 2017)
Pauley is projectable 6-foot, 185-pound RHP.  with a fastball ranging from 75-79 MPH. His curveball has a 11/5 shape at 59-64 MPH. Pauley’s change-up is 68-69 MPH.  He throws from an over-the top arm slot with regular effort.

Criag Theiss (De Soto, RHP, 2017)
Theiss is a very projectable 6-foot-6, 205-pound RHP. He has an over-the-top delivery and has good down angle on his pitches. He also showed good run on his fastball. His fastball ranged from 78-81 MPH. Craig has a sharp breaking curveball that was thrown a 67-70 MPH. His change-up was thrown at near fastball arm speed and ranged from 70-72 MPH.

Mark Vierling (CBC, RHP, 2017)
Vierling is an athletic 5-foot-10, 160-pound RHP. He displayed a fastball between 76-79 MPH with late cut. He has a 12/6 curveball between 65-69 MPH with sharp break and a change-up at 71 MPH at fastball arm speed with some sink. He has an over-the-top arm slot and free arm action. Vierling throws with easy effort and stays in line as he gets down the mound.
