Catholic Blue

No. 1 Mount Carmel (21-0; 7-0) defeated Brother Rice 7-4 as Caravan senior TJ Laurish improved to 8-0 on the season. Caravan junior Justin Sanchez had two hits and three RBI to lead the Caravan past Brother Rice (14-6; 5-2).

No. 2 St. Laurence (21-1-1; 7-0) defeated No. 6 Providence (14-5; 6-1) in New Lenox on Saturday 5-3. Read story here.

St. Rita (13-5; 6-1) hammered Loyola 13-3 in six innings behind junior Connor McClain. McClain hit two bombs for the Mustangs. Louisville-bound C Zack Soria chipped in with two hits, including a triple with two RBI. Loyola falls to (8-14; 5-2)

Catholic White

De La Salle (12-8; 5-4) defeated Bishop McNamara 7-3 behind a complete-game gem from junior Ricky Ramirez. Junior 2B Kevin Malec had a perfect 3-for-3 day with two RBI to lead the Meteor attack. Junior Tony Valdez chipped in with a pair of hits and RBI.

Big 12

No. 25 Normal West (16-4; 3-0) blanked Urbana 10-0 in the conference opener behind junior Alex Jefferson (4-1). Jefferson fired a four-hit shutout with nine strikeouts at Urbana. Jefferson helped himself out at the plate with two hits and three RBI. The Wildcats routed Urbana 11-3 in the nonconference nightcap.

Champaign Centennial (14-5; 2-2) defeated Bloomington 7-2 in the conference opener on Saturday. Bloomington (14-5; 2-1) won the nightcap 1-0 behind Purple Raider Brandon Edwards’ shutout in his first varsity start.

East Suburban Catholic

No. 10 Joliet Catholic Academy (13-5-1; 3-1) split a twin-bill with Carmel

(11-6; 3-1). The Hilltoppers won the opener behind University of Illinois-bound LHP Kevin Duchene 7-0. In game two, Carmel’s senior LHP Alex Young fired a no-hitter at the Hilltoppers.

Fox Valley Valley

Prairie Ridge (14-5; 7-1) defeated Huntley 5-3 behind Wolves junior CF Jordan Getzelman. Getzelman continued his torrid hitting on Saturday with a 2-for-2 day with two RBI.

McHenry (14-6; 6-1) defeated Dundee-Crown 3-2 on Devon Gerhke’s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh sending Warrior Nation home very happy. Warrior Josh Arevalo fired a six-hitter at the Chargers to pick up the win on the mound for McHenry.

Crystal Lake South (14-7; 6-2) handed Cary-Grove (12-7; 7-1) its first loss in the Valley behind a seven-hit shutout by junior Tyler Hall (3-1) and 6-foot-4, 215 pound Gator 1B Max Meitzler. Meitzler homered doubled and plated three runs to lead the Gators. For Meitzler the dinger was No. 5 for the hard-hitting Gator 1B this season.

S. Illinois River-River Ohio

No. 14 Benton (18-3; 7-0) crushed Massac County 12-0 in five innings behind a three-hit shutout from Bradley University bound Ty Leffler. Leffler, Trey Garrett and Ethan Hughes all plated three runs for the Rangers.
The PBR’s Drake Skleba will be at Benton City Park in Benton for the Rangers SIRR-Ohio showdown with No. 21 Harrisburg (15-5; 5-1) on Monday. On April 10 the Rangers invaded Harrisburg and hammered the Bulldogs 8-1.We expect head coach Jay Thompson’s Bulldogs to have revenge on their minds. I’m looking forward to seeing all of our Ranger and Bulldog fans. 

Upstate 8 River

St. Charles East (11-6; 9-3) split a pair with Batavia (10-7; 8-4) The Fighting Saints won the opener behind a one-hitter from Luke Ludke 3-1 and dropped the nightcap to the Bulldogs 6-5.

Geneva (14-3, 8-3) swept Elgin Larkin 8-0 and 5-2. In the first game Viking junior RHP Andy Honiotes’ (4-0) shut out the Royals. In game two the Vikings received a two-hitter from Stetson bound Matt Brandys.

Upstate 8 Valley

Neuqua Valley (14-6; 10-2) won the battle between brothers on Saturday, sweeping away Metea Valley, 5-0 behind University of Illinois-bound RHP Nick Blackburn and 7-1 in the nightcap. Wildcat junior LHP Dan Mokryzcki (3-0) allowed Metea just two hits and a run in six innings of work in the nightcap.

A little history lesson from the Roundup, keeping with our high academic standards. Neuqua and Metea were the sons of the great Pottawatomi chief of the 1830’s Waubonsie. Thus, Waubonsie, Neuqua and Metea Valley High Schools.

South Elgin (13-3; 10-2) split a pair of 2-1 decisions with Waubonsie Valley on Saturday.

West Suburban Gold

Addison Trail (13-7; 7-1) made a statement as the upstart Blazers swept away Downers Grove South 3-1 and 8-4 to occupy the top spot in the WSC-Gold. Blazers starting pitchers Mike Imperoli and Greg Schultz fired complete-game masterpieces at the Mustangs.

West Suburban Silver

No. 3 Oak Park (14-2; 5-2) split a twin-bill with York winning the first game 3-0 behind Huskie senior RHP Joe McKune’s seven-hit shutout. In game two, York rallied for two runs in the bottom of the 11th to salvage a spilt and stun the Huskies. Duke Matt DiFrancseca’s walk-off single sent the Duke contingent home very happy Saturday afternoon.

No. 12 Lyons Township (12-5-1; 7-1) split a twin-bill with Glenbard West. GW (13-9; 6-5) won the first game 8-3 behind two bombs from Hillltopper senior Ryan Kavanaugh. LT came back to win the nightcap 9-2 behind a five-hitter from junior RHP Keith Lehman (4-0). Kavanaugh went deep again for GW in game two.

Western Big 6

Galesburg (16-5; 4-2) split a twin bill with Moline (12-6; 4-2) on Saturday in Moline. Galesburg won the opener 4-2 behind Silver Streak RHP Tim Rossell (6-0). Moline came back in game two behind Maroon ace LHP Cam Kiels’ (3-1) three-shutout masterpiece.

The WB6 has a four-way log-jam with Rock Island Alleman (15-8; 4-2) and Rock Island (8-10; 4-2), joining Galesburg and Moline, atop the standings.

Nonconference

Southside Conference Challenge
No.11 Nazareth (18-1)
blanked St. Joseph 1-0 behind Roadrunner junior RHP Kyle Piotrowski (3-0) and sophomore RHP Josh Bartels. Piotrowski threw four shutout innigs to pick up the win; Bartels nailed down the save for Piotrowski by firing three scoreless innings against St. Joseph (13-8).

No. 6 Providence (15-5) bounced back from its loss to St. Laurence with an 8-6 victory in eight innings over Notre Dame (8-11)

St. Rita (14-5) defeated Carmel 5-0 behind sophomore RHP’s Nick Goldsmith (1-0) and Jake Shepski, who combined for a two-hit shutout of the hard-hitting Corsairs (11-7)

No. 5 Plainfield North (18-1) rolled past Andrew 7-2 behind Tiger Andrew Starks. Starks continued his hot hitting with two hits and two RBI to lead the Tigers past the T-Bolts

Oak Lawn (13-7), behind senior RHP Nick Moswecz and junior Bobby Kametas, the unranked Spartans crushed No. 13 Simeon 9-0. Moswecz (4-2) fired a two-hit shutout at the hard-hitting Wolverines. An even dozen Wolverines struck out against Moswecz.

Kametas and Spartan senior captain Kyle Smith both had three hits and drove home two runs. Spartan 3B Mike Yacko tripled home a run for the Spartans. Simeon falls to 14-6.

No. 7 Mundelein (18-3) ran into Vernon Hills junior Tyler Feece, who did it all for the Cougars. Feece (5-1) went the distance on the mound, doubled and plated two runs to lead the Cougars to a 7-3 win over the 7th ranked Mustangs.  Vernon Hills improves to 13-5.

Barrington (15-6) beat its guests from Chicago Jones Prep 6-3. The Eagles from Jones Prep fall to (16-4)

No. 9 Hersey (13-4) salvaged a tough week with a 4-3 win over Maine West on Saturday. Huskie Eric Stoltzner had a 4-for-4 day with two RBIs for Hersey.

No. 15 Glenbrook South (13-5) rallied past Prospect 6-5 in 11 exciting innings on Saturday. Titan Max Cohen continued to rip the cover off the ball with two more hits, including the game-winner. Junior LHP Kyle Pauly (3-1) had a spotless relief appearance to pick up the win for the surging Titans.

No. 16 Niles West (19-2) traveled to Wisconsin and came away with a pair of wins over Union Grove (WI) 4-1 and 2-1. Union Grove falls to 4-9.

No. 17 Lincoln-Way North (15-5) smashed Richards 7-2. Phoenix senior Dominic Hartman had two hits and two RBI. Junior Alex Neufeld added a big two-run double for the Phoenix.

No. 19 O’Fallon (14-6) got stung 5-3 by Metamora on Saturday.

Red-hot Troy-Triad (15-3) slipped past No. 24 Edwardsville 2-1 on Saturday morning and then later in the day blanked Lincoln 7-0. Look for the Knights, who have won nine straight, to be in the familiar position for them in the PBR Super 25 this week.

No. 25 Alton (14-5) lost to Highland 5-4 and Parkway South (MO.) 7-5. Highland improves to (13-5).

Maine South (15-3) beat Elk Grove 7-3 as Hawk junior LHP Mike Virgilio improved to 6-0 on the season. Notre Dame-bound CF Kyle Richardson continued his assault on the baseball with two hits, including a solo shot and two RBI. Hawk Nick Mitrovich chipped in with two hits and two RBI.
New Trier (11-5) beat Barrington 6-3 and Jones Prep 10-0 in Barrington on Saturday. Against Jones, Trevian lefty Nick Hedge shutout the Eagles to improve to 6-0. The win was the second this week for Hedge having defeated No. 15 Glenbrook South 2-1 on Tuesday with ten strikeouts.

Northwestern-bound CF Josh Perlmutter went deep with two on for NT. It was the future Wildcat’s third bomb of the week.

Hinsdale South (16-4) swept away rival Hinsdale Central 3-1 and 13-0 in five innings. Hornet junior Mike Marrera fired a six-hitter at the Red Devils. Villanova-bound Emmanuel Morris had four big RB I as South swept its three-game series with Central.

Merrillville Anrdrean (9-2) completed its sweep of Illinois with a 4-0 white-wash of fading Marian Catholic. On Friday the 59ers blasted Naperville Central 7-1 at Benedictine University. Marian Catholic (12-6) continued is slide this week falling at home to the 13th ranked team in Indiana.

Lisle (21-4) romped to the title in the Lisle Invitational, crushing Immaculate Conception 13-3 in five innings. Earlier in the day the Lions hammered Chicago Latin 9-1. 

Herscher (20-4) won its 20th win of the year with a 4-2 win over Paxton-Buckley-Loda on Saturday.

Morgan Park (18-5) defeated Clemente 6-3 behind Mustang Rahman Williams, who improved to 4-0 on the season for MP. Clemente falls to 11-2-1.

Stagg (9-11) outslugged H-F 12-8. Kyle Belluomini homered and junior Ricky Rogers slammed the door on the red-hot Vikings with a four-inning solid relief to pick up the win on the mound.
