In the heartland of Illinois, we hosted the Central Illinois Open on Wednesday, August 8. 77 prospects gathered at The Corn Crib in Normal, Ill. for a pro-style workout in front of the Prep Baseball Report Illinois scouting staff. After gathering the statistics from Wednesday's events, we've listed the leaders at each category, along with a .pdf link to the full compilation. Without further ado, here's a look at the numbers:
Four sub-7's lead the opening category. Jordan Smith (Urbana, 2020) ran the quickest time, at 6.83. Matthew Timm, a 2020 grad out of Illinois Valley Central, beat the 7.00 plateau by the thinnest of margins, running a 6.99. Two more 2020 grads, William Kafer (Normal West) and Brady Grashoff (Pekin) make appearances in the 6.90's range.
Holden Phelps (Prairie Ridge, 2020) tossed the highest fastball of the Central Illinois Open at 88 mph. Two more 2020 grads, Mitchel Hemmen (Teutopolis, 2020) and Sergio Marchizza (Chatham-Glenwood, 2020) follow, tied at 84. Sustaita, Guenther, Kafer, Bradford and Conklin round out the board, knotted at 83.
Along with obtaining one of the highest FB velocities, Marchizza leads all participants with a 93 exit velocity off a tee. Kade Lassen (Robinson, 2020), Jake Jacek (Normal Community, 2020), Cole Hernandez (Normal West, 2020) and Drew Ziebarth (University High, 2020) all eclipse the 90 mark.
Matt Schuler (Lyons Township, 2020) separates himself from the rest of the infielders with an 85-mph toss from across the diamond. Alex Talley (Cumberland, 2019) and Jake Jacek (Normal Community, 2019) post a pair of 80's, while Jaime Sandoval (Morton West, 2019) and Jackson Blemler (University, 2020) sit tied at 79.
Hemmen displayed one of the strongest arms posting the second highest FB velo, but he proved it again registering the highest outfield numbers. MacCallan Conklin, a 2021 grad from neighboring Normal University, impressed with an 85-mph showing.
Michael Hopkins (Brother Rice, 2019) registered the quickest times from 2.14-2.22. Danny Nuccio (Plainfield North, 2021) narrowly sits ahead of Ziebarth with a quicker range - 2.18-2.25.
Nuccio headlines catcher velos with a 77 showing. A trio of 74s from Alec Akerman, William Wirt and Max Herr follow Nuccio. Hopkins follows his leading pop time with a 73-mph toss, tied with Ziebarth.
