Crystal Lake South Rolls Past New Trier in 4A Semifinal

JOLIET, IL – Crystal Lake South scored in every inning but one, leading them to a 9-3 Class 4A State Semifinal victory over New Trier.

The Gators of Crystal Lake South got a two-out, three-run home run, in the bottom of the first inning from Noah Tyrell, to jump out to an early 3-0 lead. The big three-run blast scored McHenry JC commit, Ryan Parquette, who walked and Brian Fuentes who singled.

Crystal Lake South (35-5) continued to tack on, scoring a single run in the second, third and fifth inning to open a 6-0 lead. Gator shortstop, Kory Olsen, a Mount Mercy commit, had an RBI single in the third and in the fifth.

New Trier (30-5) cut the lead in half, scoring three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Cam Redding, Sean Douaire and Nathan Shapiro all doubled in the frame. Shapiro’s double was close to being foul down the left-field line and a player protecting the bullpen catcher down the line mistakenly picked up the ball. The miscue awarded Shapiro two bases and home plate, cutting the lead to 6-3 at the time.

Crystal Lake South, turned right around in the bottom of the sixth inning and scored three runs of their own. The three runs broke the game back open and put Crystal Lake South up 9-3 going into the top of the seventh.

Crystal Lake South, junior, right-handed pitcher Kyle Lang improved his record to 10-0 with a complete game performance. Lang went all seven innings, scattered nine hits, gave up three runs, walked one and struck out one.

Fuentes, a Wabash Valley JC commit, Tyrell and Olsen all had two hits to lead the way for the Crystal Lake South offense.

Redding, Douaire and Shapiro each had two hits to pace the New Trier offense.

With the win, Crystal Lake South advances to the 4A state championship game which will be played Saturday at 5:30 pm. The Gators face the winner of Edwardsville and St. Laurence.
