Champaign Centennial 11, Kirkwood (MO) 1
The Chargers started their Florida trip with a bang, crushing Kirkwood (MO) 11-1. Senior Jeffrey Lavin (1-0) picked up the win, striking out five and allowing one hit. Sophomore Jeff Lindgren fanned five in his solid relief stint for Champaign Centennial (1-0).  

Riverton 13, Jacksonville Routt 3 (6 innings)
The Hawks evened up their record at 1-1 with a 13-3, six-inning demolition of Jacksonville Routt. Will Schneider led the Hawk attack with three hits and six RBI. Mitch Patterson (1-0) picked up his first win of the season with four shutout innings, allowing just one hit. Jacksonville Rout (1-1) was led by sophomore Connor Stremlau, who had an RBI double  and senior Josiah Overton, who had an RBI single for the Rockets.

No. 40 Teutopolis 11-14 Salem 1-0 (First game six innings) (Second game five innings)

The Wooden Shoes opened up the 2013 season with a twin-bill sweep of Salem (0-4) on Saturday in Salem. Teutopolis (2-0) won the opener 11-1 in six innings behind a solid performance from starting and winning pitcher Ryan Ruholl (1-0). Ruholl fired four shutout innings allowing just one hit and struck out two. SIU-Bound Kyle Preumer and junior Bobby Wenthe led the Shoes’ attack with two hits and two RBI each.

Wenthe (1-0) was lights-out in game two on the mound, striking out nine in his four spotless innings, to pick up the win. Wenthe helped himself with a booming two-run double. Andy Bores chipped in with a pair of RBI.   

Effingham St. Anthony 4-1, Breese Mater Dei 7-0 (Second game 9 innings)

Defending Class 1A state champion Effingham St. Anthony (1-1) opened up its defense of its 1A title, splitting a twin-bill with Breese Mater Dei. In game one, five Bulldog miscues in the fourth inning, led to six unearned runs as Breese Mater Dei (1-1) went on to win 7-4.

St. Anthony’s NIU-bound Ben Hecht led the Bulldog attack with three hits.

In game two, Hecht dominated on the mound with six shutout innings and 10 strikeouts. Hecht also scored the game-winner in the top of the ninth. Hecht would steal second and third base and danced home with the lead run, when the throw went into left field. Sophomore Zach Gardewine (1-0) pitched three shutout innings in relief of Hecht to pick up the win.
