Donovan Brothers Lead Westmont Past Peotone

WESTMONT, IL – Westmont SS Charlie Donovan is one of the few prospects in Illinois who has seen his draft stock steadily climb throughout the spring. The left-handed hitting Donovan, who’s the No. 1-ranked prospect in Illinois’ 2015 class, has moved into top-three-round discussion thanks to his consistent play and, above all, his natural athleticism.

While Donovan has seized the limelight nearly every time he has taken the field, on Thursday afternoon, it was his younger brother, Joe Donovan, who emerged during Westmont’s 6-1 victory over Peotone in an Interstate 8 Conference game.

Joe Donovan, a catcher who’s currently ranked No. 8 in Illinois’ 2017 class, looked mature beyond his years at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two runs, RBI and two stolen bases to help Westmont improve to 25-6. He reached base all four plate appearances – he was also hit by a pitch – while showcasing a strong arm and athletic feet behind the plate.

Charlie Donovan finished 1-for-4 with a double that one-hopped the left-center fence and drove in one run. He also flew out to left field, grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored a run and was rung up on a pitch a foot off the plate by an ump wearing a hockey mask.

Junior right-hander Jackson Fischer earned the complete-game victory, yielding only two hits while striking out four. Fischer also walked three and hit three batters, most of which came in the final two innings. Fischer also added a single and walked at the plate. Senior Anthony Powers delivered a run-scoring single in Westmont’s four-run fifth inning.

Peotone (8-19), which started four sophomores, made it interesting in the seventh by loading the bases with one out, but Dylan Keene’s line drive was snagged by third baseman Matt Alisauskis for an unassisted game-ending double play.
