GPA Games: Quick Hits & Statistical Analysis

Peter Hamot & Diego Solares
Illinois Scouting Staff

On Sunday, August 8, the PBR Illinois scouting staff hosted the annual GPA Games at Lee Pfund Stadium in Carol Stream, IL. This open event to all current high school classes featured both a workout portion and gameplay setting, allowing those in attendance to show off their skills in multiple different facets. All participants that attended were of high academic standing, as verified through registering their standardized test scores and GPAs.

Today, at the event’s conclusion, we’ll provide a brief overview of those who stood out throughout the day, as well as those who showed well from a statistical standpoint. We’ll continue to unravel all the data collected from the event with the help of our technological partners throughout the week, so be on the lookout for that.

You’ll find our quick hits and our statistical leaderboards, below.

QUICK HITS

+ A winner from today in his PBR event debut: OF Zander Tubbs (Plainfield South, 2022). A projectable 6-foot-3, 185-pound athlete with loose levers, Tubbs kicked off his workout by running a 7.01 in the 60-yard dash, covering plenty of ground with long, controlled strides. He hammered multiple balls in BP to his pull-side and did so in game, turning on one for a barreled up single in his second at-bat. Tubbs’ most impressive trait is his hand speed and rotational acceleration, two metrics that graded well above-average according to our Blast Motion sensors. Still uncommitted, he’s certainly a follow name from this event.

+ MIF Julian Silva (Plainfield Central, 2023) had a strong showing both at the dish and in the field at yesterday’s event. A wiry 5-foot-8, 140-pound athlete, Silva showed barrel controls to all fields with a repeatable, compact swing that sprayed line drives to all fields. He looks the part of a top-of-the-order presence with a contact-oriented approach. Defensively, Silva moves well to both sides with smooth, sure-handed actions and a quick funnel to release.

+ C Ray Jesse (Lockport, 2023) established himself as one of the top players at Sunday’s event. A proportionally strong 5-foot-11, 180-pound athlete, Jesse displayed above-average juice off the barrel in BP and got to it in game, squaring one up the other way in his second at-bat. Defensively, Jesse topped at 80 mph from the crouch and registered a 2.12 pop-time on his best effort.

+ INF/RHP Xander Siodlarz (Waubonsie Valley, 2022) is a projectable 6-foot-1 165-pound athlete with lanky limbs that have plenty of room for added strength. Siodlarz swings a loose right-handed bat with intent to elevate, but also adept barrel control to all fields. On the infield, Siedlarz’s nimble feet allow him to gain ground laterally with smooth hands and a quick, clean transfer to release. He was also the starting pitcher for Team 1 in our gameplay portion, running his fastball up to 82 mph with feel to shoot knees and a loose, easy arm.

+ The loudest round of BP on the day came from Wisconsin product Tyler Hofmann (Germantown, 2022). Hofmann is a proportionally strong 5-foot-10, 175-pound athlete that looks to do damage in the box, attacking the baseball with intent throughout his entire BP round and in game, too. He looked the part behind the plate as well during his workout, working quickly and efficiently to the bag, popping a 1.96 on his best effort and topping at 78 mph, too.

+ OF Joey Scaravalle (Crystal Lake South, 2022) took a handful of impressive swings throughout the day. He’s a strong 5-foot-11, 180-pound broad-shouldered athlete that swings a quick right-handed stroke with present bat speed that stays short to the point of contact, working to all fields on an uphill trajectory.
