Wheaton North 4, Bartlett 1

ST. CHARLES, IL – In the St. Charles Sectional semifinal, Wheaton North made quick work of Bartlett, winning by a score of 4-1. In a game that took less than an hour and thirty minutes, both pitchers worked effectively and efficiently.

Senior southpaw Doug Hayes recorded the victory for the Falcons, tossing a complete game allowing no earned runs on four hits, striking out two. Hayes used his change up effectively to keep the Hawks off balance; the excellent arm action and change of pace between his 72-74 mph change up and 81-83 mph fastball left the Hawk hitters finding everything but the barrel.

Bartlett scored their only run of the game in the third. Sophomore left fielder Miles Zilinsky led off the inning by reaching base on an error. After a sacrifice bunt and an infield single, Hayes almost left him stranded my inducing the 6-4-3 double play but senior shortstop Ryan Karrick narrowly beat the throw at first, allowing the run to score.

Wheaton North quickly answered the 1-0 deficit with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the third. The Falcons got to Hawk starter Colin Nowak by sitting on his slider, which he used heavily. The Falcons peppered the right side of the field with RBI singles from Ryan Kent and Jacob Taschetta followed by a two RBI double by senior first baseman Tom Colletti.

Bartlett was only able to muster three base runners for the rest of the game as Hayes closed the door on the Hawks season.

Wheaton North advances to the Sectional Final to take on St. Charles East on Saturday June 1 at 11 am at St. Charles East High School.
