Geneva, Honiotes dominate Streamwood

By Seth Kenny

STREAMWOOD, IL – During Geneva’s 18-1, five-inning pounding of Streamwood on Tuesday, two significant items came to light: 1.) The Vikings’ physical lineup can flat-out swing it. 2.) Junior RHP Andy Honiotes may have established himself as the No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2013.

In regards to the offense, Geneva (23-7) hammered four home runs in the Upstate 8 contest. Senior Matt Williams went 3-for-4 with a grand slam and five RBI, while senior Matt Brandys went 2-for-2 with a two-run bomb and a two-run double. Lead-off man Andy Francis set the table, going 2-for-2 with a walk.

In regards to Honiotes, the 6-foot-3, 180-pound right-hander, he struck out 10 during his five-inning complete game. At one point, he sat down six straight, and he yielded two walks and three hits to improve to 7-0 on the season. His numbers, however, don’t tell the complete story, which is why he will likely climb from the No. 6 spot in the Class of 2013 rankings when they are released next.

Few, if any, pitcher in the junior class has command of four quality pitches as Honiotes. Working from a high-3/4 arm slot, Honiotes’ fastball sat in 87-89 range through five innings, climbing as high as 91. His slider is a plus pitch, one that can be a go-to swing-and-miss pitch at the next level. His hard 77-79 mph slider has extremely sharp two-plane life, and he throws it for strikes. His curveball, which has more depth than the slider, was equally as effective, in the 72-75 range. He also flashed a firm changeup when he wanted it.

Honiotes works with great tempo and has a fluid delivery. His arm action is explosive and clean, and his frame is one that he can easily add strength in the future.
